Tato diplomová práce se věnuje přeneseným významům dvou substantiv označujících jednu z hlavních částí lidského těla, a to anglického head a českého hlava. Cílem studie je tyto přenesené významy identifikovat a následně vzájemně porovnat. Teoretická část práce představuje dva základní pohledy na metafory a metonymie, tedy přístup tradiční ve srovnání s přístupem kognitivním. Praktická část následně analyzuje data, pro jejichž kompilaci bylo zapotřebí vytvořit vlastní reciproční korpus na základě paralelního korpusu InterCorp. Výsledky studie jsou následně shrnuty v závěrečné části této práce. This diploma thesis deals with the figurative meanings of the two nouns denoting the top part of the human body, .i.e., head and hlava. This thesis aims to identify and subsequently compare these figurative uses. The Theoretical part of this study introduces the two main approaches to metaphors and metonymies, that is, the traditional approach as opposed to the cognitive approach. The Practical part of this thesis subsequently analyses data, that were gathered from the reciprocal corpus, which was based on the parallel corpus InterCorp. The results of this study are summarized in the Conclusion part of this thesis.

In every region of the world, pivotal states with geo-strategic advantage to determine the direction of events, actions and shape arrangements regionally and continentally take the lead. They adopt soft and hard strategies-aid, grants, diplomacy-economic and public, security, etc. in their relationships and interactions and also have critical say on issues relating to development and peace of the region (Sevin, 2015). Such powers played critical roles in establishing organizations like NATO, European Union, the United Nations Organization-UN, etc. (Dokubo and Oluwwadare, 2011). Such was Nigeria's role after independence from British control in October 1960. Between 1950's to early 1990's, black African nations were embroiled in liberation struggles. Most black States were under severe colonial subjugation and achieved independence through bloodshed and severe clampdown. Countries like Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe were not liberated until the 1980's while South Africa followed after Nelson Mandela's release from prison in 1990. Many African states were faced with certain expertise and resources gap to advance as independent states which created a need for stronger nations' support. Within this period, Nigeria's journey to independence was smooth in comparison, with less bloodshed and confrontation. Nigeria also had the resources which placed her in position to assist. At this point in history, Nations across the world were adopting modernization concept of development to achieve social and economic changes in postcolonial world and post-World War 11. Many developed States adopted the strategy to push developing states and former colonies to economic growth (Jiafeng, 2009:73). Today, it comes in form of development assistance. However, this was not the case in Africa as many of the colonial powers adopted different exit strategy from their colonies. It was in this weak state that Nigeria's first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa declared at the UN in 1960 that: "So far I have concentrated on the problems of Africa. Please do not think we are not interested in the problems of the rest of the world; we are intensely interested in them and hope to be allowed to assist in finding solutions to them through this organisation, but being human we are naturally concerned first with what affects our immediate neighbours. On the question of colonialism and racial discrimination, I am afraid that we in Nigeria will never compromise" (Nwanole and Iwoha,2012:76) The statement demonstrates that Nigeria placed African unity, Africa and black Nations at the centre of her foreign policy. As averred by McGillivray and White (1993) that aid is an instrument of foreign policy, Nigeria, under military and civilian regimes used untied financial aid, human capital support and propaganda as her foreign policy tool to fight apartheid, racism and colonialism. Nigeria played key role in formation of the Economic Community of West African States-ECOWAS and led in establishing and funding the ECOWAS Ceasefire (Peace) Monitoring Group-ECOMOG which was employed to tackle the conflicts that engulfed Western Africa in 1990s to early 2000. Nigeria established Nigerian Technical Aid Corp, including Nigerian Trust Fund and Technical Development Cooperation Fund to support African Development Bank in assisting African countries in need and has been involved in many peace-support operations since 1960. Nigeria's influence and commitment was widely recognised and acknowledged as one who can dominate and lay claim to supremacy in black Africa. However, in an era of increased cooperation, when many countries are positioning themselves as part of global decision-making architecture like BRICS, Nigeria's influence has declined. The study therefore seeks to establish what led to this decline, which military or civilian regime contributed to the decline and establish the link between development aid and foreign policy

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá slovesným časem a deixí v novinových článcích žánru "soft news" publikovaných online. Předmětem zkoumání jsou variace použití slovesného času v jednotlivých strukturálních částech článku za pomoci dvouúrovňového přístupu k mediálním online textům. Výzkum je zaměřen na časovou deixi jakožto nástroje pro vytvoření zdánlivě sdíleného časoprostoru s příjemci textu za účelem zvýšení interpersonální dimenze diskurzu. Články publikované na internetu jsou v této práci chápány jako sestávající ze dvou úrovní; "náhled článku na Facebooku" (zde nazvaný "Facebook preview") tvoří první úroveň a je pomocí hyperlinku propojen s úrovní druhou, čímž je myšlen celý originální článek publikovaný na oficiálních webových stránkách daného zpravodajského periodika. Vlastní zkoumají použití slovesného času jako prostředku k vyjádření deixe, a dále také výskyt "modelu dvojitého posunu slovesného času" (tzv. "double tense shift pattern") z pohledu pragmatiky, analýzy diskurzu a systémové funkční lingvistiky. The present master's thesis is concerned with grammatical tense and deixis in online soft news. It aims at investigating the variations of verbal tense in individual structural segments on two levels of soft news online discourse, with particular focus on temporal deixis as a means of constructing an illusion of shared temporal context with intended articles' recipients. Online news is considered in this work as consisting of two levels; a Facebook preview being the first level connected via a hyperlink to the second level, which is a corresponding full-length article published on newspaper's official web pages. Analyses conducted within this thesis investigate the usage of deictic/non-deictic tense, as well as incidence of the double tense shift pattern, from the points of view of pragmatics, news discourse analysis, and systemic functional linguistics.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá hodnotícím jazykem v mediálním diskursu. Ačkoli je objektivita považována za jednu z nejdůležitějších vlastností zpravodajství, hodnotící slova se objevují jak v seriózním tak v bulvárním tisku. Teoretická část práce se soustředí na představení konceptu objektivity ve zpravodajství a jeho různé definice, mezi které patří například Westerstahlova kritéria objektivity. Dále se zaměřuje také na hodnotící slova, která vyjadřují autorovy názory a pomáhají vytvářet vztah mezi producentem a recipientem zpráv. Hlavní část práce je tvořena analýzou hodnotícího jazyka v anglickém seriózním a bulvárním tisku. Tato analýza je založena na přístupu Moniky Bednarek, která se ve své práci soustředí především na hodnotící slova v novinách a v mediálním diskurzu. This diploma thesis focuses on the evaluation in media discourse. Although the objectivity is considered to be the main feature of news, the language of evaluation is present both in broadsheets and tabloids. The theoretical part introduces both the concept of objectivity connected with the Westerstahl's objectivity criteria and the language of evaluation as the expression of writer´s opinion and construction of the relations between the writer and the reader. The main focus is the following analysis of the evaluative language in English broadsheets and tabloids. It is based on the approach of Monika Bednarek who concentrates on the analysis of newspaper corpus and evaluation in media discourse.

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na podrobnou analýzu hlavních hrdinek čtyř románů, konkrétně na Sulu a Nejmodřejší oči od Toni Morrison, Barvu nachu od Alice Walker a Corregidoru od Gayl Jones. Kapitoly budou věnovány jednotlivým aspektům jejich vývoje, konkrétně role narace a význam mlčení, mateřství a odkaz rodiny, koncept krásy a jeho spojitost se sexualitou, postavení afroamerické ženy v patriarchální společnosti a na závěr samotné osvobození se od zavedených stereotypů a sociálního útlaku. This master thesis focuses on four novels; Sula, The Bluest Eye, The Color Purple and Corregidora, by three significant African-American female authors, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker and Gayl Jones. I will deal with several aspects of the process of liberation of each of the protagonists, Sula, Pecola, Celie and Ursa. The aspects in particular are the role of narration, in other words, the importance of the protagonist´s voice, motherhood and the influence of family history on the protagonist´s life, the idea of beauty and how it is connected to sexuality, the position of a black woman in the society, and finally the liberation from prejudices the protagonists have to face.

Předložená diplomová práce se zabývá literární analýzou knih Umbertina od Helen Barolini a Crazy in the Kitchen od Louise DeSalvo se zaměřením na postavy babiček a vnuček. Je rozdělena na tři části, z nichž první se zabývá životem a díly autorek. Druhá část představuje kontext italsko-amerických ženských autorek. Třetí je věnována literární analýze dvou děl. První podkapitoly jsou zaměřeny na samotnou postavu babiček a na vztah mezi nimi a jejich vnučkami z vybraných knih. Dále jsou analyzovány cesty obou vnuček do Itálie, historie zkreslená vyprávěním babiček a na závěr motivy přehozu a ubrusů. The main aim of this thesis is the literary analysis of Umbertina by Helen Barolini and Crazy in the Kitchen by Louise DeSalvo with the focus on the grandmother and granddaughter figures. The thesis opens up in its first chapter with the lives and works of the two authors and continues in the second chapter with outlining the literary context of Italian American literature, concentrated solely on women authors. The third and main chapter consists of literary analysis. Its subchapters deal with the figure of grandmother, with the relationship of the grandmothers and the granddaughters from the two books. The last sections of the main chapter deal with the visits of both of the granddaughters to Italy, with history filtered through the lens of the grandmothers and the final subchapter concentrates on the motifs of bedspread and tablecloths.

Tato práce se zabývá sociální dokumentární fotografií od jejího počátku na konci devatenáctého století po její vývoj v první polovině dvacátého století. Zkoumá využití a význam těchto fotografií v dokumentární literatuře, jenž spočívá především v potvrzení pravdivosti uvedených tvrzení a věrohodnějším zprostředkování chudoby. Pro tento účel se práce zaměřuje na knihy How the Other Half Lives od Jacoba A. Riise, The People of the Abyss Jacka Londona a Let Us Now Praise Famous Men Jamese Ageeho a Walkera Evanse. Práce zdůrazňuje osobitý přístup těchto autorů a způsoby, jimiž snímky začlenili do textu svých děl. The thesis looks at social documentary photography from its beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century to its later development throughout the first half of the twentieth century. It focuses on its role in documentary literature, in which it mainly serves as evidence to the text and provides a more truthful depiction of reality. It studies and compares three works, Jacob A. Riis's How the Other Half Lives, Jack London's The People of the Abyss and James Agee and Walker Evans's Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. It emphasizes the personal approach of these authors and the techniques they used for incorporating the images into the text of their works.

V rámci práce je realizován aktivně stabilizovaný vláknový Machův-Zehnderův interferometr určený k implementaci jednofotonových experimentů. Stabilizace fáze probíhá na silném optickém signálu, který je dokonale oddělen od měřicího jedofotonového signálu. V rámci práce byla odladěna stabilizační zpětnovazební smyčka a provedena její charakterizace pomocí Fourierovy transformace a Allanovy odchylky. Pomalý fázový drift, který je dominantní, byl utlumen o 6 řádů, přičemž celková šířka pásma stabilizační smyčky je 1 kHz. Stabilizovaný interferometr může fungovat jako dělič svazku s fázově laditelným proměnným dělicím poměrem. Variabilita nastavení dělicího poměru je od 0:100 do 100:0 s libovolným krokem a s extinkcí větší než 25 dB. Stabilita nastavených dělicích poměrů je měřena a diskutována v práci. Dále je umožněno rychlé spínání libovolného dělicího poměru pomocí implementovaného integrovaného elektro-optického fázového modulátoru. Rychlé spínání bylo demonstrováno pro 5 ns pulsy s dobou náběžné hrany 0,7 ns. Při budoucích jednofotonových experimentech bude rychlé spínání součástí dopředné vazby. In this Thesis, active phase-lock of a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer is demonstrated. The phase-lock is performed with a strong signal that is perfectly separated from the single-photon measurement signal. Characterization of the phase-lock stability was performed using Fourier transform and Allan deviation. The slow phase drift, which is dominant, was decreased by 6 orders and the stabilization loop performs well up to 1 kHz. The setup behaves as a phase-tuned variable beam splitter. The possible splitting ratio is in the range from 0:100 to 100:0 with arbitrary step and with extinction more than 25 dB. The stability of various splitting ratios is measured and discussed. Further, the setup enables fast switching of an arbitrary splitting ratio employing an integrated electro-optic phase modulator. The fast switching was demonstrated for 5 ns pulses with rise time of 0.7 ns. The setup will be utilized for single-photon experiments with active feed-forward.

Tématem této diplomové práce je společenská reforma ve dvou dílech britského spisovatele Aldouse Huxleyho, Brave New World a Island. Téma je analyzováno prostřednictvím biografického přístupu, diplomová práce poskytuje jiný pohled na tato dvě díla, pohled vzhledem k historickému a biografickému kontextu. Bylo identifikováno několik oblastí zájmu, o kterých byl Huxley přesvědčen, že mají potenciál být reformovány. Detailní analýza Brave New World a Island by měla zachytit vývoj Huxleyho názorů, Island odpovídá na otázky, které autor nebyl schopen vyřešit při psaní Brave New World. The theme of this diploma thesis is the social reform in the two of novels British writer Aldous Huxley, Brave New World and Island. The theme is analyzed by means of biographical approach, offering a different perspective on these two novels, a perspective with respect to historical and biographical context. Several fields of interest were identified, the fields Huxley believed carried the most potential for a reform. Detailed analysis of Brave New World and Island should reflect development of Huxley's opinions, as Island answers some of the questions that puzzled him in writing Brave New World.

Cílem této práce je seznámit čtenáře se dvěma významnými postavami Americké revoluce, konkrétně s Benjaminem Franklinem a Thomasem Painem. Práce se zaměřuje nejen na život, ale rovněž na dílo těchto dvou státníků a revolucionářů. Specifický důraz je kladen na ta díla a prvky životů těchto dvou autorů, které sehrály významnou roli v Americké revoluci. Práce se v neposlední řadě věnuje také specifikům vlivu, jaký tito revolucionáři měli na revoluční dění, a snaží se jejich příspěvek srovnat. The aim of this thesis is to familiarize the reader with two essential personas of the American Revolution, namely with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine. The thesis deals not only with the lives, but also with the works of these two statesmen and revolutionaries. The thesis focuses especially on such works and aspects of the authors' lives that played a significant role in the American Revolution. The thesis also deals with the specifics of the influence the two revolutionaries had on the events and tries to compare their contribution.
