Scalable Decision Making: Uncertainty, Imperfection, Deliberation, European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML/PKDD 2013)
Guy, Tatiana Valentine; Kárný, Miroslav
2013 - English
Machine learning (ML) and knowledge discovery both use and serve to decision making (DM), which has to cope with uncertainty, incomplete knowledge, problem and data complexity and imperfection (limited cognitive and evaluating capabilities) of the involved heterogeneous multiple participants (aka agents, decision makers, components, controllers, classifiers, etc.). Contemporary DM deals with complex systems characterised by heterogeneous components and their goal-motivated dynamic interactions. The individual participants are selfish, i.e. follow their individual goals. There is no well-justified way to influence or describe the resulting collective behaviour of such a system via a well-proved combination of the selfish components. Economic and natural sciences describe concepts governing the functioning of systems of selfish participants as well as ways influencing their behaviour. However, the majority of solutions rely on the human moderator/manager controlling such a system. Keywords: scalable; decision making; uncertainty; imperfection; deliberation Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Characteristics of the Chen Attractor
Augustová, Petra; Beran, Zdeněk
2013 - English
Within the paper a mathematical representation of the so-called Chen model is described as a particular parametric three-dimensional chaotic dynamical system, i.e. a system of three nonlinear differential equations evolving in time. The main aim of this paper is to find for the Chen system the properties that are known for the Lorenz system and its famous Lorenz attractor. First, the integrals of motion are derived for some parameters of the Chen system. The integrals of motions play an important role in physics, e.g. for conservation laws. Next, the shape of the global attractor of this system is approximated by volumes that contain the attractor. The shape predicts the future behavior of the system. To obtain these results, the already proved fact that the Chen system is a continued transition of the Lorenz system is used. According to our knowledge, the same approach of shifting the known facts about the Lorenz system to a newdynamical system, the Chen system in this context, has not been presented yet. Data assimilation methods for early and late phase of radiation accident - A comprehensive review with examples of methods examined within solution of the grant projet VG20102013018
Hofman, Radek; Pecha, Petr; Šmídl, Václav
2011 - English
The task of the decision support in the case of a radiation accident is to provide up-to-date information on the radiation situation, prognosis of its future evolution and possible conse- quences. The reliability of predictions can be significantly improved using data assimilation, which refers to a group of mathematical methods allowing an efficient combination of ob- served data with a numerical model. The concerns application of the advanced data assimilation methods in the field of radiation protection. We focus on assessment of off-site consequences in the case of a radiation accident when radionuclides are released into the environment. In this report we present a comprehensive review of data assimilation evaluated for pur- poses of inclusion into the data assimilation and decision support system ASIM developed within the grant project VG20102013018 provided by the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic. Keywords: data assimilation; radiation protection; atmospheric dispersion modeling Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Towards Effective Measurement and Interpolation of Bidirectional Texture Functions
Filip, Jiří
2011 - English
Bidirectional texture function (BTF) is acquired by taking thousands of material surface images for different illumination and viewing directions. This function, provided it is measured accurately, is typically exploited for visualization of material appearance in visual accuracy demanding applications. However, accurate measurement of the BTF is time and resources demanding task. While the sampling of illumination and viewing directions is in all known measurement systems done uniformly, we believe that to be more effective the sampling should be tailored specifically to reflectance properties of materials to be measured. Hence, we introduce a novel method of sparse BTF sampling. The method starts with collecting information about material visual behavior by means of small initial subset of reflectance samples measurement and analysis. This information is fed into our heuristic algorithm producing sparse material dependent sampling that is consequently used for BTF measurement and interpolation. Keywords: bidirectional texture function; measurement systems; illumination Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Modeling multivariate volatility using wavelet-based realized covariance estimator
Baruník, Jozef; Vácha, Lukáš
2011 - English
Abstract. Study of the covariation have become one of the most active and successful areas of research in the time series econometrics and economic forecasting during the recent decades. Our work brings complete theory for the realized covariation estimation generalizing current knowledge and bringing the estimation to the time-frequency domain for the first time. The results generalize the popular realized volatility framework by bringing the robustness to noise as well jumps and ability to measure the realized covariance not only in time but also in frequency domain. Noticeable contribution is brought also by the application of the presented theory. Our time-frequency estimators bring not only more efficient estimates, but decomposes the realized covariation into arbitrarily chosen investment horizons. Results thus bring better understanding of the dynamics of dependence between the stock markets.
