First Report on Large Crabgrass Resistant to Atrazine in the Czech Republic
Salava, J.; Chodová, D.; Kočová, M.; Krahulec, František
2006 - English
A survey on the occurrence of weeds surviving treatment with atrazine was carried out at the railways in the Czech Republic in 2000-05. Large crabgrass was widely distributed at the surveyed railway junctions. Seeds of large crabgrass were collected from plants growing in the surroundings of the railway station Prague-Bubny in 2003 and 2004. Resistance or susceptibility to atrazine was verified by the whole-plant response and chlorophyll fluorescence assays. A region of the psbA gene encoding D1 protein of Photosystem 2 was amplified by PCR and sequenced to determine the molecular basis for the atrazine resistance. It was found out that the resistance in the Prague-Bubny large crabgrass biotype was conferred by a glycine for serine substitution at residue 264 of the Dl protein of Photosystem 2. There was an excellent correspondence between the presence of the mutation and phenotypic resistance to atrazine of individual plants. Keywords: Digitaria sanguinalis; triazine resistance; psbA gene Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Factors affecting the vegetation of ditches in the Třeboň Basin Biosphere Reserve
Kozlíček, Z.; Květ, Jan
2004 - English
This study evaluates the ecological conditions and their influence on the species composition of the vegetation growing in the ditches and on their banks in the Třeboň Basin Biosphere Reserve, Czech Republic. The results obtained have facilitated the definition of an optimum vegetation management strategy for conservation of the flora of the ditches. Keywords: running waters; aquatic vegetation; riparian vegetation Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Phenotypic variability in native populations of Lythrum salicaria L. across geographical gradient: between- and within-population differences
Bastlová, D.; Květ, Jan
2003 - English
Variability in growth characteristics was studied in 15 native Eurasian populations of L. salicaria across the N.-S. geographical gradient in a garden tub experiment. Plant height, total plant mass and its components (dry weight of shoots, roots, lateral branches, leaves and inflorescence) and the basal stem diameter, number of lateral branches and internodes were assessed at the end of 1st season. Most of the total variability in plant height, shoot dry weight, that of lateral branches, leaves and inflorescences, basal stem diameter, leaf area, specific leaf area, flowering time and number of primary lateral branches can be explained by differences in latitude of the location of the populations' origin. But the variability in root dry weight, number of roots and number of internodes is higher between and within the populations than between the geographical locations. Keywords: purple loosestrife; growth characteristics; Eurasia Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Human health risks of cyanobacterial toxins /Microcystins/ in Brno Reservoir
Maršálek, Blahoslav; Babica, P.; Bláha, Luděk
2002 - English
Monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms showed, that significant health risks of both direct dermal contact as well as exposure to microcystins exist in recreation in Brno. During the summer season 2001, safety limits for dermal contact were exceeded at 93% of analysed localities. Our results iniciate that both monitoring and regelatory actions ase necessary. Keywords: cyanobacteria; Brno Reservoir; health Available at various institutes of the ASCR
