Diaspora a média: pákistánští šíité v Norsku
Hashir, Angelina Duaa; Miessler, Jan; Numerato, Dino
2023 - English
The study focuses on the Pakistani Shia Muslim diaspora residing in Oslo. The study will explore how living in a technologically advanced era of the internet, along with having a diaspora identity, influences the cultural and religious practices of the post-migration generation. Furthermore, it will explore how it impacts their association and perception towards their homeland and religion and provides them with a sense of belonging living in a multicultural society. The study employs a qualitative approach, conducted through semi-structured interviews with seven members, four from the post-migration generation and three from the migration generation. Thematic analysis reveals how the internet connected the diaspora community to their religious and cultural roots, i.e., Pakistan. It showcased how their perception of culture and religion has evolved and changed due to exposure to the internet, which has helped them learn more about their culture and religion and made them more culturally aware. The findings highlight the complex interplay between media, religious identity, cultural identity formation, and diaspora experiences among the Pakistani Shia Muslims in Oslo. Furthermore, it explores the variation in religious and cultural identity between the two generations and how technology may play a... Národ, náboženství a manipulace: poválečná mediální scéna v zemích bývalé Jugoslávie
Brnović Milorad, Marija; Miessler, Jan; Hrůzová, Andrea
2023 - English
This study focuses on the media narratives on social dynamics and reconciliation in the media of former Yugoslav countries, Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, more than two decades after the end of wars. The research focuses on the presence of divisive narratives, such as offensive language, bias and sensationalism, elements of national stereotypization, hate speech, and commitment to impartial journalism in current media practices. The historical background of media control and manipulation in Yugoslavia, from the Tito era to nationalist narratives during the Yugoslav wars, forms a significant part of the research context. The study aims to shed light on critical aspects of media reporting, setting the stage for future research into the broader political and economic issues affecting the media landscape in these countries. Keywords media, war, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina Tato studie se zaměřuje na mediální narativy o sociální dynamice a usmíření v médiích zemí bývalé Jugoslávie, Srbska, Chorvatska a Bosny a Hercegoviny, více než dvě desetiletí po skončení válek.
Turnbull, Rabia; Parks, Louisa Rosemary; Florea, Adrian
2023 - English
I. Abstract In the midst of a world grappling with interconnected global challenges, climate change has surged to the forefront as a growing concern demanding urgent resolution. This research delves into the intricate interplay of historical legacies, power dynamics, and the pursuit of sustainability within the context of cobalt mining-a pivotal facet of the global green energy transition. The research navigates the nexus between climate justice, an unrelenting growth paradigm, and extractivism, with a particular focus on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) using an exploratory case study approach to determine whether green extractivism can serve as a threat multiplier. The findings unveiled an intricate tapestry wherein historical imprints and power dynamics converge, shaping the violent trajectory of cobalt extraction which has remerged in the post-Paris era. The case of the DRC underscores the discord between sustainability aspirations and the unfettered pursuit of economic growth. The ecological toll of cobalt mining, particularly its resonance within the Congo Basin rainforest, reveals alarming environmental consequences while economic realities expose a paradox wherein growth comes at grave human and environmental expense. The country's contemporary dependence on cobalt fuels an overreliance... Available in a digital repository NRGL

Regionální mocnosti na výpravě do zahraničí: Extra-regionální geoekonomické strategie Indie, Turecka a EU v Africkém rohu
Teufel, Adam; Ludvík, Jan; Machold, Rhys
2023 - English
Since the end of the cold war, scholars have been debating the concept of geoeconomics as an alternative to geopolitics for an international system in which the significance of military power is supposedly superseded by economic power. However, while a clear definition and conceptualisation of geoeconomics continues to be absent, its relevance for global dynamics has become undeniable in the context of great power competition, and beyond. Whether called regional, middle, or emerging powers, countries like India or Türkiye are playing an increasingly important role, particularly in the economic domain, in which they leverage economic power for both political and economic gain. However, while much research and theoretic framework exist concerning regional powers' geoeconomic statecraft in their respective regions, their increasingly extra-regional engagement, although evident, remains under-conceptualised. This thesis will therefore assess the utility of a framework to analyse and characterise regional powers' extra-regional geoeconomic strategies. This thesis proposes the use of Wigell's (2016) ideal-type framework for regional powers' geoeconomic strategies to be compatible with the analysis of extra-regional engagement. Through a plausibility probe case study, it will give insight into the utility and... Available in a digital repository NRGL

Srovnání vztahů EU-Moldávie a čínsko-filipínských vztahů
Weltin, Alexander Oskar Herbert; Karásek, Tomáš; Russo, Alessandra
2023 - English
Between Motivation and Reality: Projecting Power in the Name of Regional Security? - Comparing EU-Moldovan and Chinese-Philippine relations Abstract Power comes in many shapes and forms. One need only look at the plethora of interconnected conceptions of power the academic literature on politics and international relations has produced over the last century and beyond to convince oneself of this fact. Michael Barnett and Raymond Duvall's (2005) 'taxonomy of power' captures this interconnectedness like no other approach. They distinguish between two 'kinds' of social relations - interactions between actors and relations of social constitution - through which power works as well as two degrees of 'specificity' - direct and diffuse - of which such relations can be. However, such approaches are few and far between, as the pertinent theoretical and empirical literature seldomly considers these concepts in concert. The purpose of this piece, therefore, is to illustrate the interconnectedness of different conceptions of power through the cases of EU-Moldovan and Chinese-Philippine relations. Barnett and Duvall's taxonomy serves as the theoretical framework. This piece's first finding is somewhat surprising. The EU's and China's power broadly work in the same way. Both the EU and China project power towards Moldova... Available in a digital repository NRGL

von Werdt, Benjamin Max David; Peacock, Timothy; Rosa, Paolo
2023 - English
This dissertation presents a new method of strategic analysis - the Profiling Cycle. It proposes to combine micro-level profiling methods as used in criminal profiling, behavioral psychology, and sociology, with macro-level methods used for strategic analysis, including neoclassical realism and a newly developed comparative strategy. The Theory of the Big 5 was chosen to represent behavioral psychology, and Coleman's Boat was used for sociology. Key elements from these prevailing theories and methods were borrowed and applied on the level of an entire state. The dissertation explains the Profiling Cycle step-by-step, thereby allowing anyone wishing to use this new method to do so. For illustration, it applies the first step of the Profiling Cycle to the Russian Federation as a case study. The Profiling Cycle's ability to accurately predict future behavior can only be tested in the medium to long term. This dissertation acts as a proof-of-concept. It describes how a functionally complete profile can be created with the help of behavioral psychology, and how an analyst might use this profile to set up possible medium to long term scenarios. Etická paradiplomacie Skotska jako strategické narativy
White, Kenneth; Paterson, Ian; Hynek, Nikola
2023 - English
This dissertation seeks to interrogate Scotland's upcoming publication of a feminist approach to international relations, announced in 2021 - situating it within a growing cohort of states. It assumes the position that Scotland's international activities - conceptualised as paradiplomacy - are already feminist. In conducting this argument, it will explore questions as to why Scotland adopts a feminist foreign policy and as to how this policy might look. The analytical frameworks necessary to answer these questions are conjured through feminist theory, soft power, and strategic narratives. Building on these concepts, content analysis is utilised in relation to Scottish Government communications through the years of Scotland's 'good global citizenship' from 2016 until the present. From this approach, an array of interesting feminist strategic narratives are gleaned and harnessed to better understand how Scotland approaches gender within its paradiplomacy. Cyber Warning Intelligence: Enhancing Predictive Capabilities in Cyberspace. A Comparative Study of the American and Italian Cases July 2023 University of Glasgow: 2686635S University of Trento: 233481 Charles University: 722530 Presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies Word count: 24141 Supervisor: Prof. doc. Dr. Vit Stritecky, M.Phil., Ph.D. Date of Submission: 26/07/2023 Abstract The present research project addresses the question of how cybersecurity strategies currently adopted by public and private major organisations might be revised in light of a constantly evolving and increasingly sophisticated cyber threat ecosystem that demands a radical paradigm shift not towards the enhancement of early detection of and reaction to cyber incidents but towards the acquisition of capabilities to forecast them. More specifically, the author revives the Cold War-era concept and practices of indications and warning (I&W) intelligence and attempts to contribute to that line of academic work that has more recently applied them to the cybersecurity context. It is argued that integrating I&W intelligence methodologies within one's extant cybersecurity structures is essential to limit one's exposure to cyber risks and... Mediální framing: transformace obrazu Nursultana Nazarbajeva v amerických médiích
Tokayeva, Assem; Miessler, Jan; Jeřábek, Hynek
2023 - English
The thesis deals with U.S. media coverage of Kazakhstan's first president Nursultan Nazarbayev between 2011 and 2022. Using Bourdieu's theory of journalistic field and Entman's concept of media framing, the content analysis of five different media outlets shows that while commercial newspapers (NYT, WP, WSJ) were more critical than non- profit online media outlets (Eurasianet, RFE/RL) regarding Nazarbayev and his regime during events that challenged his power; their overall coverage of the country, its leader and his legacy has been restrained or even credited Nazarbayev for various achievements. Differences in the degree of critical stance were also identified between the two non- profit media. Providing an overview of Kazakh government-funded lobbying information campaigns abroad, the thesis confirms the importance of research into the use of international media platforms by authoritarian regimes aiming at creating a favorable image abroad. Keywords: Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan, media framing, lobbyism, U.S. media, RFE/RL, Eurasianet, NYT, WSJ, WP Range of thesis: 52 pages, i.e. 119,088 characters Práce se zabývá mediálním pokrytím prvního prezidenta Kazachstánu Nursultana Nazarbajeva v USA v letech 2011 až 2022. Práce poskytuje přehled o kazašských vládou financovaných lobbistických informačních kampaních v zahraničí a potvrzuje důležitost výzkumu využívání mezinárodních mediálních platforem autoritářskými režimy s cílem vytvořit příznivý obraz v zahraničí. Kde jsou ženy? Genderová citlivost ve strategiích deradikalizace ženských zahraničních teroristických bojovnic v Německu.
Scharnagl, Annika Johanna; Aslan, Emil; Florea, Adrian
2023 - English
The aim of this thesis is to examine German deradicalisation practices for IS returnees in terms of their gender sensitivity. While the majority of former foreign terrorist fighters were men, up to one third of those who left Germany for Syria or Iraq were women. Furthermore, only women and their children have been repatriated so far as part of the coordinated repatriation efforts. There is thus a good reason to look at the issue using Germany as an example. The literature on deradicalisation suggests that gender plays an important role in this process and should be included in interventions. Therefore, it is also necessary to look at the adaptation of deradicalisation practices based on the gender of the person using the German example. Through expert interviews, the situation on the ground was investigated. The results of this work show that German interventions are already gender-sensitive to some extent. However, they are not named as such and much work and change are still needed to be able to call the whole method gender sensitive. Based on these findings, policy recommendations were formulated. Possible limitations of the work and further fields of research in the field of gender-sensitive deradicalisation are also mentioned.
