Ownership structure, corporate governance and asset prices
Marcinčin, Anton,; Wijnbergen, Sweder van; Mejstřík, Michal; Hanousek, Jan
1999 - English
Firms demand capital and suppliers of capital, i.e. firms owners, demand return on their sunk investment. If managers and owners shared the same objectives, or were able to specify perfect contracts, firms would have good access to capital and owners satisfying returns. In real word, however, managers and owners interests differ significantly, and contracts are imperfect. This is a potential source of company bad performance, low returns on equity participation and bad access to capital. Corporate governance mechanisms, that specify relations between managers and owners, set cost of capital and thus performance of firms and economy. Theoretical literature tends to agree that ownership structure itself matters for corporate governance. This relation is very difficult to test empirically, because ownership structure does not change often enough to allow for testing. The opportunity for empirical research appeared with mass privatisation programs in Eastern Europe, where huge number of firms changed their ownership structures fairly quickly and in different directions. Therefore, in this thesis we decided to use data on the Czech Republic, which succeed to privatise thousands of firms during a five-year period. We use information from privatisation process and later generated information from stock market and about mutual funds. Srovnání alternativních měnových pravidel v modelu české ekonomiky
Šmídková, Kateřina; Tůma, Zdeněk
1999 - Czech
Since koruna turbulence in 1997, many statements have been made about suitable strategies for the Czech monetary policy. This work tries to give a model background for such policy debate. Analogously to preceding research on policy rules, the Czech economy is represented with a small model. Three alternative monetary strategies are approximated by policy rules. Several specific features of the Czech economy (such as large openness, corrections of administered prices and nominal convergence) are reflected in the model. Specifically, during model simulations, major shocks come from external prices and price corrections. Similarly, policy rules mirror strategies of monetary policy that are relevant for the Czech experience. For example, standard inflation targeting rule is modified with a concept of imported equilibrium interest rate. Alternative definitions of aggressiveness of the exchange rate rule correspond to changes in width of the band. Model simulations can be used for comparison of efficiency of rules in ensuring convergence to low inflation and their costs in terms of output, interest rate and trade balance volatility. Three alternative policy rules are compared in a model framework. Results of simulations can provide a background for policy debate on properties of alternative strategies of the Czech monetary policy. Specific features of a period of transition have been reflected in the extended set of measures when comparing the rules. The work presents results of simulations including tests of sensitivity to calibration, and summarises conclusions. First, rules that combine several targets are inferior to inflation and exchange-rate rules since they are less efficient in ensuring nominal convergence and more costly in terms of output, interest rate and external balance volatility. Second, exchange-rate rules are less efficient and less costly in terms of output volatility. Keywords: Ekonomika česká; měna; Práce disertační Available in a digital repository NRGL

An experimental investigation of buyer behaviour in the first days after price liberalization
Skořepa, Michal,
1998 - English
The subject of the thesis is the behaviour of buyers in the first days after price liberalization when prices of most goods and services in the economy change overnight and, moreover, the prices of a given good or service are different in different stores, while before the liberalization, the price was the same everywhere. First, the thesis describes the situation at the consumer market in the time of the liberalization. Next, the thesis provides an overview of those areas of economics, psychology and "consumer research" whose subject of inquiry is close to the task solved by a consumer looking for a low price in a market with prices unknown to that consumer. After that, three rules are suggested which might be used by actual buyers when looking for a low price in an unknown market: Adaptive Rule, Bargain Rule and Improvement Rule. An experiment is then described on whose results the three rules are tested. Before the tsting itself, there is a discussion of the difficulties brought about by the fact that a nonlinear version of the probit technique has to be used and that the values of the rules` parameters have to be estimeated by numerical methods. it turnes out that on the basis of the data from the experiment, it is not possible to earmark one of the rules as closest to reality.
