Unreliable Narrator: Towards a Definition of Narrative Unreliability

2009 - English Cílem práce je vytvořit zhuštěný, avšak co nejkomplexnější přehled dosavadních snah o konceptualizaci nespolehlivého vypravěče a nespolehlivosti ve vyprávění vůbec. Nejprve jsou kriticky zmapovány dva hlavní teoretické přístupy -- nazývané zde rétorický a kognitivně-konstruktivní -- a následné pokusy o jejich syntézu či odklon od jimi navrhovaných modelů. Dále jsou představeny a krátce rozebrány typologie a taxonomie druhů nespolehlivosti ve vyprávění a nespolehlivých homodiegetických vypravěčů. Poslední kapitola je pak věnována analýze presupozičního rámce, na němž je většina teorií zabývajících se nespolehlivostí ve vyprávění vystavěna. Tento je doplněn o podněty k dalšímu zkoumání a opatřen kritickým komentářem ve snaze o rozšíření i zpřesnění pole působnosti kategorie nespolehlivosti ve vyprávění. The aim of the paper is to provide a concise, yet (as the limited space allows) comprehensive, critical outline of the heretofore attempts at definition of the concepts of an unreliable narrator and narrative unreliability. First, two main competing theoretical approaches for dealing with narrative unreliability -- dubbed here the rhetorical and the cognitive-constructivist -- and the attempts at either their synthesis or a departure from their models are surveyed and commented upon. Consequently, the hitherto proposed typologies and taxonomies of narrative unreliability and unreliable homodiegetic narrators are presented and briefly analyzed. Finally, a summary of the presuppositional framework on which a majority of the theories of narrative unreliability rest is presented and supplemented with some critical commentary and suggestions for further elaboration on the so far undertheorized areas. 2009 - English Táto práca slúži ako pilotná štúdia pre ďalší výskum. Vychádza z hypotézy o uvedomelosti rodených Angličanov o rozdieloch vo výslovnosti medzi ich rodeným prízvukom a štandardnou anglickou výslovnosťou. Ako podklad pre tento výskum slúžil akcent charakteristický pre mesto Birmingham. Práca je rozdelená na dve hlavné časti: teoretickú a praktickú. Teoretická časť popisuje rôzne geografické a sociolinguistické faktory ovplyvňujúce celkovú podobu akcentu u každého jednotlivca, sumarizuje a porovnáva metódy a výskumy iných linguistov a popisuje charakteristické črty birminghamského akcentu. Praktická časť je založená na nahrávkach, ktorých všetci účastníci sú pôvodom z Birminghamu a zaoberá sa rozdielmi medzi ich akcentom a štandardnou anglickou výslovnosťou ako aj návrhmi pre budúci výskum. This thesis is intended to serve as a pilot study for further research. The work is concerned with the hypothesis about the English speakers? awareness of differences between their native accent and standard pronunciation (RP). The Birmingham accent was taken as an illustration to prove this hypothesis. The work is divided into two main parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part describes different geographical and sociolinguistic factors influencing the individual?s accent performance, summarize and compare the methods and surveys conducted by other linguists and provide the description of the characteristic features of Birmingham dialect. The practical part is based on recordings of Birmingham-native speakers and deals with the actual differences between the accent and RP and suggests proposals for the future research. 2009 - English Diplomová práce se zabývá úlohou mateřského jazyka ve výuce anglické gramatiky. První část práce je zaměřena na vysvětlení pojmu gramatika, představuje odlišné přístupy k výuce gramatiky, argumenty pro a proti výuce gramatiky. Zároveň je v této části věnován prostor gramatickému vysvětlování-jeho aspektům a metodám. Druhá část práce je zaměřena na praktický výzkum, který byl proveden na základě dvou dotazníků. Praktická část práce dále obsahuje srovnání učebnic anglického jazyka a také představuje autorčin vlastní způsob vysvětlování anglické gramatiky s pomocí mateřského jazyka. The diploma thesis deals with the role of the mother tongue in teaching grammar. The first part of the thesis is focused on explanation of the term grammar; it introduces different approaches to teaching grammar as well as the arguments for and against teaching grammar. The first part of the thesis also deals with grammar explanation-its aspects and methods. The second part of the thesis contains a practical research that was carried out with the help of two questionnaires. The practical part of the thesis contains the comparison of textbooks used for learning English and the author{\crq}s own way of explaining grammar with the help of the mother tongue. Práce poukazuje na rozdíly mezi americkou a britskou angličtinou a věnuje se důvodům proč učit i americkou verzi angličtiny. The thesis deals with the incorporation of American English into EFL teaching. The study points out differences between American and British English and focuses on reasons why to teach American English as well. 2009 - English Tato bakalářská práce na téma {\clqq}Kategorie určenosti a ustálená spojení v současné angličtině`` byla zpracována na základě předpokladu, že determinanty v anglických ustálených spojeních vykazují celou škálu dosud nepopsaných vlastností. Práce si klade za cíl především popsat současnou situaci užití tohoto fenoménu, který v českém jazyce nemá přímého ekvivalentu. Druhým cílem bylo také původní přesvědčení autora a vedoucího práce, že v některých ustálených spojeních dochází k lexikalizace determinantu, která pak ovlivní význam následujícího podstatného jména a tím i celého spojení. První cíl nám poskytl velké množství studijních materiálů, a proto nakonec nebyl druhý cíl plně rozvinut. Tato práce popisuje zejména situaci a objevená pravidla při užívání členů v ustálených spojeních a připravila dostatečné podklady pro analýzu cíle druhého, který bude popsán v práce magisterské. Při analýze ustálených spojeních bylo spolupracováno s rodilým mluvčím, bez kterého by průzkum ustálených spojeních nebyl možný. This thesis called: ``Determination and Set Phrases in Contemporary English{\crqq} was elaborated on the basis of the presumption that the determiners in the English set phrases have many qualities that have not been described yet. The main aim of the work was the description of the present-day usage of this phenomenon, which does not have any Czech equivalent. The second aim was also to prove the original conviction of the author and the consultant that in some set phrases it is the lexicalization of the determiner which influences the meanings of all the noun phrases and consequently also the meanings of all the set phrases. This second aim was not fully expanded upon as the main aim was found to have provided ample material for study. This work mainly describes the situation and the revealed rules within the set phrases and it prepares sufficient groundwork for the analysis of the second aim, which will be fully developed in the master{\crq}s thesis. The analysis of the set phrases was made through cooperation with a native speaker, without whom it would not be possible to do any linguistic survey.
