The English Country House and the English Country House Disturbed: comparing different aesthetic treatments of space in Jane Austen´s Pride and Prejudice and Ian McEwan´s Atonement

This diploma thesis addresses different aesthetic treatments of space, especially the English country house in both Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and in Ian McEwan´s Atonement. The theory considered to be essential for this thesis is combined with excerpts taken from primary sources which serve as the cornerstone for literary analysis. Fundamental books for the theory are mainly of foreign origin such as Gaston Bachelard´s The Poetics of Space, Mark Girouard´s Life in the English Country House and Stuart Lowe´s Housing Policy Analysis. However, the thesis also considers the literary insights of Czech authors, for example Daniela Hodrova. This diploma thesis will provide readers with an extensive resumé in the Czech language. Finally, the author´s findings will be summarised in a relevant conclusion. The diploma thesis is devoted to teaching and learning English vocabulary. At first, the theoretical part explains the acquisition and learning vocabulary. Then it describes vocabulary from the linguistic and didactic point view and emphasizes its essential parts to be included when teaching and learning vocabulary. Moreover, the thesis deals with factors which influence the selection of vocabulary and the development of teaching methods, traditional as well as alternative, which can be used when teaching and learning English vocabulary. The main focus is paid to individual phases of teaching and learning vocabulary including presentation and practice techniques which are followed by teaching and learning vocabulary strategies. The last chapter of the theoretical part provides the analysis of learning styles with the focus on visual, auditory and kinaesthetic/tactile type. The practical part then deals with the research carried out with the chosen groups of lower secondary learners and their teachers. The aim of the research is to find out which techniques and activities teachers use when presenting and practicing English vocabulary and if they consider the individual learning styles. This work focuses on classroom communication, more specifically on the comparison of the use of English and the mother tongue in English language teaching. The theoretical part of this thesis focuses at first on the development of language teaching as a whole followed by the methodological development based on its underlying theories and also the role the teacher and the language plays. Throughout the theoretical part, many suggestions and questions arise. They are being dealt with in the practical part where these suggestions are compared with a teaching practice through observation of a teaching process in a selected primary school and interviews with the teachers. This master thesis deals with the aesthetic theory of the picturesque and its influence on perceiving the landscape, which is analysed on three travel books by Samuel Johnson, Dorothy Wordsworth, and Thomas West. First, it is described the socio-cultural background of the theory and travel writing. In the main part three aspects of the landscape are studied - mountains and ruins, water features, and trees - to discover the influence of the picturesque on perceiving the landscape. Aims in Teaching and Testing Writing in ELT

This master thesis deals with aims in teaching and testing writing in ELT. It primarily examines the current shape of treating writing as a language skill at elementary schools in the Czech Republic where there has been recently implemented a new curricular policy. The thesis turns attention to the requirement of aligning aims of teaching and testing writing with one another as well as with those formulated in curricular documents, which encourages beneficial backwash and achieving aims stated by the sector. For this purpose, Blooms' revised taxonomy for learning, teaching and assessing is introduced and consequently used in the practical part of the thesis which investigates the level of correspondence among aims stated in the projected curriculum and those of teaching-learning and testing tasks in the seventh grade of elementary school. This work focuses on the analysis of the conception of fear in the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Howard Phillips Lovecraft. The main part of the text deals with the issues that can be considered crucial when speaking about fear depicted in Poe's and Lovecraft's work. The issues are mutually interrelated and they are interconnected with the depiction of fear. Together, they show the similarities and differences between Poe's and Lovecraft's conception of fear. This thesis engages only in the horror stories written by Poe and Lovecraft, which means that the analysis of their short stories belonging to other genres (satire, fantasy, etc.) is not provided. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá ekonomickým jevem známým jako "prokletí přírodních zdrojů", který popisuje problémy některých ekonomik založených výhradně na vývozu svých primárních komodit - například ropy. Tato práce analyzuje hospodářské a politické reformy, resp. požadavky na řešení problematiky založené na prokletí přírodních zdrojů. Podstata práce spočívá v analýze teoretického pozadí jevu "prokletí přírodních zdrojů" a norských zkušeností, zejména na řízení svých přírodních zdrojů. Teoretická východiska a norské zkušenosti mohou odhalit nedostatky alžírské politiky v řízení svých ropných příjmů s cílem realizovat hypotetické reformy, které by Alžírská vláda měla brát v úvahu.
