2023 - English This bachelor's thesis deals with the influence that Christianity and the original Anglo-Saxon Pagan religions had on each other during the Christianization of Anglo-Saxon Britain. Above all, it deals with the coexistence of Christian and pagan symbols in the texts of Old English literature. The theoretical part deals with the historical context of the time in which the examined texts were written. It focuses on the Christianization of Anglo-Saxon Britain and the continuing influence of the original pagan faith and its symbols on literary art, mainly the epic poem Beowulf. The practical part of this work deals with the analysis of the text of the epic poem Beowulf, the symbols used in it and their meanings. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vlivem, který na sebe měli křesťanství a původní Anglosaská pohanská náboženství v období christianizace Anglosaské Británie. Především se pak zabývá soužitím křesťanských a pohanských symbolů v textech Staroanglické literatury. Teoretická část se zabývá historickým kontextem doby, v níž byly zkoumané texty napsány. Zaměřuje se na christianizaci Anglosaské Británie a přetrvávajícím vlivu původní pohanské víry a jejích symbolů v literárním umění, převážně pak v epické básni Beowulf. Praktická část této práce se pak zabývá rozborem textu epické básně Beowulf, s ohledem na využité symboly a jejich významy. Divadelní hra The Children od Lucy Kirkwood z ekokritického hlediska

2023 - English This bachelor thesis deals with the play The Children by a contemporary British author Lucy Kirkwood. It looks at the play from an ecocritical point of view and focuses on the way it reflects the environmental problems of today's world, especially regarding the issue of human responsibility for human-induced climate change. The theoretical part introduces key concepts such as the idea of Anthropocene and Capitalocene, their ethical implications and the idea of responsibility towards future generations. Furthermore, it briefly touches upon the biography of the author, her work, and the real-life inspiration behind The Children, the 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima in Japan. The practical part interprets the play from the perspective of responsibility of one generation towards others. This thesis sees The Children as a commentary on the state of today's society and attempts to draw a parallel between the situation in the play and the current ecological crisis and climate change. Nahlíží na hru z ekokritického hlediska a zaměřuje se na způsob, jakým hra reflektuje environmentální problémy dnešního světa především s přihlédnutím k otázce lidské odpovědnosti za klimatické změny způsobené lidskou aktivitou. Teoretická část představuje klíčové pojmy, jako je myšlenka antropocénu a kapitalocénu, jejich etické důsledky a myšlenku odpovědnosti vůči budoucím generacím. Dále stručně představuje biografii autorky, její dílo a skutečnou inspiraci, která stála u zrodu divadelní hry The Children, a to jadernou katastrofu v japonské Fukušimě v roce 2011. Praktická část interpretuje hru z perspektivy odpovědnosti jedné generace vůči generacím ostatním. Tato práce vnímá hru The Children jako komentář stavu současné společnosti a pokouší se najít paralelu mezi situací ve hře a současnou ekologickou krizí a klimatickými změnami. Téma racionality v díle Harry Potter a metody racionality

2023 - English This thesis aims to explore the theme of rationality as it is developed in Eliezer Yudkowsky's fan fiction series Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (2010). The theoretical part provides an introduction to the concept of fan fiction and studies its position within the contemporary literary context, introduces Eliezer Yudkowsky and his work, explores his background as a rationalist, and focuses on the topics of Bayes' Theorem, Bayesian reasoning and cognitive biases, which are incorporated into Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. The practical part then draws upon the concepts established in the theoretical part and exemplifies Yudkowsky's use of rationalist concepts, specifically as a central theme of the narrative and how it shapes the character and actions of Harry Potter and other characters. It demonstrates Yudkowsky's use of rational concepts and also evaluates how the theme of rationality adds intrigue to the plot and drives it forward. By examining key moments and characterisation throughout the narrative, the thesis then assesses the effectiveness of Yudkowsky's advocacy for rationality and the way in which rationality is portrayed. Teoretická část poskytuje úvod do témata fanfikce a jejího přínosu pro literaturu, zkoumá autorův vztah k racionalismu a dále se zaměřuje na témata Bayesovy věty, bayesovského usuzování a kognitivních zkreslení. Praktická část pak staví na konceptech v teoretické části a demonstruje, jak Yudkowsky vyobrazuje racionalitu jako hlavní téma fanfikce a jak tyto koncepty ovlivňují osobnost a činy Harryho Pottera a dalších postav. Praktická část též názorně ukazuje výskyt racionalistických konceptů napříč dějem a hodnotí, jak téma racionality přidává ději na zajímavosti a vede k jeho rozvoji. Na základě analýzy důležitých momentů a charakterizace postav pak práce posuzuje účinnost Yudkowského propagace racionality a způsob, jakým je racionalita ztvárněna. Simulace uspořádání organických molekul na površích pevné látky pomocí párových potenciálů

2023 - English Organic molecules on a flat, unreactive, periodical surface self-assemble to ordered superstructures. The superstructures can be used to selectively tune the properties of the surface. This problem can be studied using quantum mechanical models, such as Density functional theory (DFT). The use of those models for problems with hundreds of atoms and thousand of iterations is, however, due to their complexity, computationally impractical. In this thesis we extend and test an existing algorithm developed by the advisor of this thesis. The algorithm sacrifices accuracy for a quicker simulation time by using the method of paired potentials. This method simplifies the quantum mechanical description of an atom by considering a point source of change and replaces the complex interaction between atoms with pair parametrized forces. This method is incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation which, from a given superstructure obtained from exper- imental data, predicts the position and deformation of the molecules that minimize the total potential energy. We test the algorithm on two real-world problem sets. The algo- rithm gives results comparable to that of DFT when tested on already studied problems, yet converges to the solution much faster. It can be used as a standalone program or as an initialization to the DFT... Organické molekuly rozptýlené na plochý, nereaktivní, periodický povrch se spontálně uspořádají do superstruktur, které mohou být použity k ladění vlastností povrchu. Tento problém může být studovám za použití velmi přesných kvantově mechanických výpočet- ních modelů. Použití těchto modelů na problémy obsahující stovky atomů a tisíce iter- ací je, nicméně, kvůli jejich složitosti, výpočetně nepraktické. V této práci rozšiřujeme a testujeme existující algoritmus používaný vedoucím této práce. Algoritmus používá metodu párových potenciálů pro zrychlení výpočtů, avšak na úkor přesnosti. Tato metoda zjednodušuje kvantově mechanický popis atomu a uvažuje atom jako bodový náboj a mění komplexní interakci mezi atomy na párově parametrizovatelné funkce. Tato metoda je in- tegrovaná do Monte Carlo simulace, která pro zadanou superstrukturu, získanou z exper- imentálních dat, předpoví konfiguraci molekul v superstruktuře minimalizující celkovou potenciální energii. Algoritmus dává výsledky srovnatelné s přesnějšími, kvantově me- chanickými modely a konverguje k řešení mnohem rychleji. 2023 - English This thesis will analyse the impact of Donald Trump as the President of the United States on trade with China during his office, comparing it to Barack Obama and Joseph Biden's terms. The paper will look at both the political and economic consequences of Trump's actions and decisions, together with the response to them from the Chinese side. The Trade War, together with other Trump's economic decisions towards Asia, resulted in tensions which led to a partial loss of the United States' position in that region and a worsening of relations with China. With the help of the comparative analysis method, the research concludes that Trump had an enormous impact on trade with China but the same external factors as Covid-19 also heavily influenced it. The paper argues that the political ideas which each President adopts were also one of the primary reasons for changes in the trade, both positive and negative. The person in charge of the state is pushing the trade relationship in one way or another, even if he does not possess complete control of the economics. Od roku 2010 začala využívat své schopnosti tvrdé síly k prosazování svých zájmů v zahraničí prostřednictvím angažovanosti v Iráku, Sýrii, Libyi a Somálsku. Ale Irák a Sýrie mají pro Ankaru zvláštní význam ve srovnání s ostatními scénami, kterých se účastní. Hlavní motivací politiky Ankary v Iráku a Sýrii je boj proti přítomnosti PKK v těchto dvou zemích, protože tato skupina představuje významnou hrozbu pro tureckou územní celistvost. V tomto ohledu má Türkiyeova angažovanost v Iráku a Sýrii hlubší důvody a je intenzivnější. Přesto události, jako byla invaze do Iráku v roce 2003 a vypuknutí syrské občanské války v roce 2011, oba destabilizovaly. Tato destabilizace posílila PKK a umožnila Íránu zvýšit svůj vliv na ně. Tato práce se zabývá opatřeními, která přijalo Türkiye k zachování své národní bezpečnosti proti přítomnosti PKK v Iráku a Sýrii a také íránskou angažovanost v těchto dvou zemích po jejich destabilizaci. 2023 - English Conservatism and political apologies share a paradoxical relationship, commonly viewed as contradictory, yet upon closer inspection reveal more similarities than expected. This apparent contradiction stems primarily from the varying interpretations and applications of these concepts across different academic disciplines and areas of discourse. Existing interpretations, such as Michael Cunningham's claim that conservatism is more compatible with political apologies than other major western ideologies, are based on broad assumptions. This thesis expands on Cunningham's findings by adopting an intersectional approach to scrutinize the concepts of conservatism and political apologies, in particular within the context of Canadian parliamentary speeches. The thesis answers: are we or are we not able to conceptually locate political apologies within conservatism? Whatever the answer might be to this first question, can we find empirical evidence of that conceptual relationship in a real world context?
