Living on the Edge: Integration vs. Modularity in the Phonology of Czech Anglicisms

2017 - anglický The article discusses different aspects of the phonology of Czech Anglicisms, categorizing the adaptation mechanisms into “integrative” and “modular.” The integrative mechanisms include the Phonological Approximation Principle, the Spelling Pronunciation Principle, and different types of analogies. The modular mechanisms, which increase the autonomy of the subsystem of Anglicisms, include the Original Pronunciation Principle, the presence of marked phonemes or phonotactic structures, phonological variability resulting from the competition between adaptation principles, irregular mapping between phonology and spelling, as well as underlying links to English phonology. Quantitative evidence is provided for some of these tendencies, and several psycholinguistic hypotheses are formulated in connection with the adaptation model. Reflection on the Dictionary of Czech Dialects

2017 - anglický After finishing the Czech Linguistic Atlas (1992-2011), the Brno Department of Dialectology of the Institute of the Czech Language, Czech Academy of Sciences, comes to the most significant phase of its aktivity - to the lexicological compilation of the gathered dialect materiál. In connection with a question arises, what type of a dialect dictionary should be compiled. It could be either some type of a differential dictionary, or a dictionary of comprehensive character. These guestions reflect not only the scientific point of view and the national and cultural interest, but also the temporal perspective, personal possibilities of the researches-dialectologists (their qualifications, experience, age) as well as in these days more and more important financial support. In her article, the author tries to characterize some possible zypes of differential dialect dictionaries and draws attention to their pros (advantages) and cons (dishadvantages). Peripheral Old Czech names for Owls

2017 - anglický This paper focuses on the interpretation of the Old Czech peripheral ornithonyms vap, vapek a puňek. Based on an analysis of the context for the evidence, and with the help of more recent sources and an analysis of the morphological structure, several findings have been made: a) the Old Czech vap is a deverbative formed from the Croatian vapiti, which provides further proof of contact between the two languages during the Middle Ages, b) the formant -ek performs a complex function in the names of animals, as it may simultaneously carry a diminutive and an agentive meaning, while including the information that the word is the name of an animal, c) the distribution of the names of animals was loose in earlier times, with one term frequently relating to several referents, whereas one animal commonly bore several names. 2017 - český Během vlády Karla IV. prošel český jazykový systém řadou změn, které jej instrumentálně rozšiřovaly, funkčně obohacovaly a strukturně prohlubovaly. Část z nich byla projevem vnitřního vývoje jazyka, část vyvolaly vnější okolnosti kulturněhistorické povahy. Z hlediska celkového postavení jazyka, objemu funkcí, které plnil, a repertoáru vyjadřovacích prostředků byly pro tento vzestup klíčové podněty, které vyrůstaly z kulturní, politické a společenské situace navozené stylem, cíli a výsledky Karlova panování. Under the rule of Charles IV, the Czech language system underwent a series of changes which instrumentally broadened it, enriched its function, and deepened its structure. Part of it was a reflection of the internal language development and part was caused by external circumstances of a cultural and historical nature. Impulses which emerged from the cultural, political, and social situation introduced by the style, goals, and results of Charles’ rule were pivotal for the entire language, its functions, and the means of expression.
