Appreciated Officer, Unloved Commander. Bedřich Neumann and the Czechoslovak Army

Bedřich Neumann's career as a professional officer began as a Czechoslovak Legionnaire during the First World War. In the interwar army he was not one of the highhest-top generals, but he was one of the most respected experts of the “upper middle management” of the army. A steep career culminated during the Second World War with his activities first in the Resistance at Home and then with the Czechoslovak Army-in-Exile. He became one of the main targets of Communist propaganda seeking to weaken the position of the London government-in-exile, and the rise of the Communists in 1945 brought his career to a halt. After emigrating in 1948, Neumann – for the third time – became actively involved in the foreign struggle for freedom and independence of his homeland. However, the outstanding theorist and staff officer is still not appreciated even until today, and the effects of targeted slander and the denigration of communist propaganda in particular still linger on his memory. Bedřich Neumann se ke kariéře profesionálního důstojníka dostal jako československý legionář v letech první světové války. V meziválečné armádě nepatřil k nejvyšší generalitě, byl ale jedním z nejvíce uznávaných odborníků „vyššího středního velitelského managementu” armády. Strmá kariéra vyústila za druhé světové války během jeho působení zprvu v domácím a poté v zahraničním odboji. Stal se jedním z hlavních cílů komunistické propagandy snažící se oslabit pozici londýnské exilové vlády, a nástup komunistů v roce 1945 jeho kariéru zastavil. Po emigraci v roce 1948 se Neumann – již potřetí v životě – zapojil do boje za svobodu a nezávislost vlasti. Vynikající teoretik a štábní důstojník ovšem dodnes není doceňován a na jeho památce dodnes ulpívají zvláště důsledky cílených pomluv a očerňování komunistické propagandy.

The study focuses on the area of the Moravian and Silesian borderlands in the period before, during and after the Second World War. It shows how Czech literature, cinematography and television production captured the history of this territory. Follows Czech culture from the years after the Second World War to the present day. Studie se zaměřuje na oblast moravského a slezského pohraničí v období před 2. světovou válkou, v jejím průběhu i po jejím skončení. Ukazuje, jakým způsobem česká literatura, kinematografie i televizní tvorba zachycovala historii tohoto území. Sleduje českou kulturu od let po druhé světové válce do současnosti.

On January 16, 1839, a short report appeared in the Preußische Staats-Zeitung announcing the possibility of perfect mechanical reproduction of oil paintings. The news, which soon spread to other countries through the local press, was about the invention of the Berlin painter Jacob Liepmann – the so-called Ölgemälde-Druck. The paper aims not only to recall the forgotten invention and its creator and to clarify Liepmann’s principle of mechanical reproduction of oil paintings, but also to shed light on the circumstances of its development, publication, existence and early demise. In addition, attention is paid to contemporary discussions on the topic of perfect, fast and easy reproduction of a painting and to the problem of making the works of old maters accessible to the public. Dne 16. ledna 1839 vyšla v Preußische Staats-Zeitung krátká zpráva ohlašující možnost dokonalého mechanického reprodukování olejomaleb. Informace, která se prostřednictvím lokálního tisku brzy rozšířila i do dalších zemí, se týkala vynálezu berlínského malíře Jacoba Liepmanna, nazvaného Ölgemälde-Druck. Cílem příspěvku je nejen připomenout zapomenutý vynález a jeho tvůrce a objasnit Liepmannův princip mechanického reprodukování olejomalby, ale také osvětlit okolnosti jeho vývoje, zveřejnění, existence a brzkého zániku. Pozornost je navíc věnována i dobovým diskusím na téma dokonalého, rychlého a snadného reprodukování malby a v neposlední řadě i problému zpřístupňování děl starých mistrů širokým vrstvám.

Methodology of conservation-restoration of low-fired unstable ceramics

The methodology is focused on the conservation-restoration of low-fired unstable ceramics. It provides a comprehensive overview of suitable procedures for processing this type of material. It contains a summary of suitable methods for assessing the degree of damage, sampling procedures and recommended analyses for identifying chemical and mineralogical composition of ceramics. It also describes cleaning options, consolidation procedures, bonding and filling of missing fragments and possible retouching. It also contains principles for the appropriate storage of these objects and annotated examples are given to understand the individual methods. Metodika je zaměřena na konzervování-restaurování nízkopálené nestabilní keramiky. Podává ucelený přehled o vhodných postupech pro zpracování materiálu tohoto typu. Obsahuje souhrn vhodných metod pro hodnocení stupně poškození, postupy odběru vzorku a doporučené analýzy pro identifikaci chemického a mineralogického složení keramiky. Dále popisuje možnosti čištění, postupy konsolidace, lepení a doplňování chybějících fragmentů a případné retuše. Obsahuje rovněž zásady pro vhodné uložení těchto předmětů a pro pochopení jednotlivých metod jsou uvedeny komentované příklady.

We used a combination of quantitative and qualitative research to map individual areas of expatriate issues, critical needs, and fundamental problems of compatriots in the following countries: Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and Germany. We suggested their solutions and formulated conclusions and recommendations for creating the expatriate policy in these selected countries. Za kombinace kvantitativního a kvalitativního výzkumu byly zmapovány jednotlivé oblasti krajanské problematiky, klíčové potřeby a problémy krajanů a návrhy na jejich řešení v následujících zemích: Velká Británie, Austrálie, Nový Zéland, USA a Německo. Byly zformulovány závěry a doporučení pro tvorbu krajanské politiky v těchto zemích.

Methodology for the Classification and Evaluation of Industrial Heritage: Water Management

The methodology deals with water management facilities (dams, small reservoirs, waterways, facilities for the use of water energy, water supply facilities, sewerage and sewage treatment plants), which it assesses from the point of view of monument care. It provides a basic orientation in the topic, an overview of the typology and tools for evaluating water management facilities/objects. The structure of the methodology and the focus on evaluation criteria, which are not yet sufficiently known and accepted in monument care: the typological value, the value of the technological flow and involvement in wider systems are adapted to this. In monument care practice, it should thus contribute to improvements in the documentation, evaluation and objective selection of the most important examples designed for monument protection, which could help to eliminate (or at least mitigate) the protection imbalance of individual types of water management facilities. The methodology is intended primarily for employees of monument care and state administration. It is a tool for orientation in the topic of water management and for their evaluation from the point of view of monument care. It is also recommended as a teaching aid for high schools and universities with a technical focus in the field of water construction and water management. Metodika se zabývá objekty vodního hospodářství (přehrady, malé vodní nádrže, vodní cesty, objekty pro využití vodní energie, objekty vodárenství, stokování a čistírenství), jež posuzuje z pohledu památkové péče. Poskytuje základní orientaci v tématu, přehled typologie a nástroje k hodnocení objektů vodního hospodářství. Tomu je přizpůsobena struktura metodiky a soustředění na hodnoticí kritéria, jež nejsou dosud v památkové péči dostatečně známé a přijaté: hodnotu typologickou, hodnotu technologického toku a zapojení v širších systémech. V památkové praxi by tak měla přispět ke zlepšení v dokumentaci, hodnocení a objektivním výběru nejvýznamnějších příkladů, navržených k památkové ochraně, čímž by mohla napomoci v odstranění (nebo alespoň zmírnění) nevyváženosti ochrany jednotlivých typů vodohospodářských objektů. Metodika je určena především pro pracovníky památkové péče a státní správu. Je nástrojem pro orientaci v tématu vodního hospodářství a pro jejich hodnocení z pohledu památkové péče. Rovněž je doporučena jako výuková pomůcka pro SŠ a VŠ technického zaměření v oblasti vodních staveb a vodního hospodářství

This study aims to link the cultural history of early industrialization with the beginnings of the labour movement, exploring the changing collective identity of printers and typesetters, both elite and elitist skilled print workers, at a time of basic social change. Due to their proximity to written culture, typographers were the first manual workers to take up the pen and themselves reflect on the changes in their position. The source material consists of Czech and German texts from the latter half of the 19th century. In order to compare typographers’ changing identities, texts and conditions from the Early Modern period are also examined. In addition to texts written by typographers, an examination is also made of typographic association activities and typographers’ strikes, as typographers’ identities increasingly changed. Studie má záměr propojit kulturní dějiny rané industrializace a počátky dělnického hnutí. Zkoumá měnící se kolektivní identitu tiskařů a sazečů, elitních i elitářských kvalifikovaných knihtiskařských dělníků, v časech fundamentálních změn společnosti. Typografové byli vzhledem ke své blízkosti k písemné kultuře prvními manuálně pracujícími, kteří se chopili pera, a sami reflektovali proměny svého postavení. Pramenný základ tvoří českojazyčné a německojazyčné texty z druhé poloviny 19. století. Pro komparaci měnící se identity typografů jsou zde zkoumány i texty a poměry z období raného novověku. Vedle textů z pera typogafů jsou zkoumány také aktivity typografických spolků a typografické stávky, během kterých docházelo k akceleraci proměn typografické identity.

The paper analyses the discussion of the Old Bohemian bards of the Manuscript of Dvůr Králové as a prefigurement of modern editors and poets during the first half of the 19th century in historical and critical discourse and in adaptations in art. In its transformations, it also traces the formation of ideas about the canon of Czech literature, or about the work of art as its emerging founding element. Studie sleduje diskusi o staročeských bardech Rukopisu královédvorského jako předobrazu moderních editorů a básníků v průběhu první polovině 19. století v historickém a kritickém diskursu i v adaptacích v umění. V jejích proměnách sleduje zároveň utváření představ o kánonu české literatury, resp. o autorském uměleckém díle jako jeho prosazujícím se zakládním prvku.

The introductory chapter of the proceedings of the VIIth Congress of Art Historians, held in September 2021 in Ústí nad Labem, presents the topic of infrastructures as one of the central themes of contemporary art and asks what place they have in the discipline of art history. The focus is on the temporally and locally conditioned context, everything that surrounds the work, what materially constitutes it and what enables or directly conditions its existence, what preserves it in time and what brings attention to it. Úvodní kapitola sborníku ze VII. sjezdu historiků a historiček umění, který se konal v září 2021 v Ústí nad Labem, předkládá téma infrastruktur jako jedno ze stěžejních témat současného umění a ptá se, jaké místo mají v disciplíně dějin umění. V centru pozornosti se ocitá dobově a místně podmíněný kontext, všechno co dílo obklopuje, co jej materiálně tvoří a co umožňuje nebo přímo podmiňuje jeho existenci, co jej uchovává v čase a co k němu přivádí pozornost.
