One thousand and fifty years of the Bishopric of Prague

The book is dedicated to the 1050th anniversary of the foundation of the Prague bishopric. The first block of studies places the topic of the first Czech diocese in the Central European context of the Carolingian and Ottonian empires, the related ecclesiastical institutions and the Christianization processes in their individual parts, e.g. among the Polabian Slavs. The second block of texts traces the processes leading to the building of the foundations of the Bohemian diocese, its establishment and its continuity with the Great Moravian ecclesiastical beginnings. Equally important are the probes tracing the process of Christianization of Czech society, the relationship between the Prague bishops and the Czech ruler, and the emergence of church organization. The book concludes with studies tracing the Czech and Moravian bishoprics at the turning points of the Hussite and Reformation periods, the Recatholization and the reforms of Joseph II. Kniha věnovaná 1050. výročí založení pražského biskupství. První blok studií zasazuje téma první české diecéze do středoevropských souvislostí karolínské a otonské říše, souvisejících církevních institucí a christianizačních procesů v jejich jednotlivých částech, např. u Polabských Slovanů. Druhý blok textů sleduje procesy směřující k budování základů české diecéze, jejího založení a ke sledování její návaznosti na velkomoravské církevní začátky. Neméně důležité jsou sondy sledující proces christianizace české společnosti, vztah pražských biskupů a českého panovníka i vznik církevní organizace. Knihu uzavírají studie sledující česká a moravská biskupství ve zlomových dobách husitství a reformace, rekatolizace a v době reforem Josefa II.

The Turbulent Development of Czechoslovak Middle Eastern Policy in the Years 1948-1955

This chapter aims to introduce and interpret the development of Czechoslovak foreign policy to the Middle East in 1948-1955 in the\ncontext of the ongoing Cold War using the case studies of Czechoslovak bilateral relations with Israel and Egypt. After the communist coup in\nFebruary 1948, Czechoslovak foreign policy encountered essential changes that also influenced Czechoslovak attitudes towards the Middle\nEast. While in the late 1940s there was an effort to maintain the existing local partnerships (e.g. the continuing support to the\nemerging State of Israel), the early 1950s brought a significant shift of Czechoslovak Middle Eastern policy due to the international and\ninternal political factors. As result, Czechoslovakia started to focus on the development of close mutual relations with some Arab countries.\nIn this sense, the year 1955 is considered a milestone regarding the Egyptian-Czechoslovak arms deal which set an important precedent for\nsimilar contracts of military cooperation between Czechoslovakia with the other regional actors. Tato kapitola představuje vývoj československé blízkovýchodní politiky v letech 1948-1955, kdy se zaměřuje na proměny přístupu Československa vůči Izraeli a Egyptu a intepretaci těchto změn v kontextu událostí probíhající studené války. Československá zahraniční politika po komunistickém převratu v roce 1948 prošla zásadními změnami, které se postupně promítly rovněž do československé blízkovýchodní politiky. Zatímco koncem 40. let převládala snaha udržet partnerství s dosavadními lokálními partnery (např. formou pokračující podpory nově vznikajícímu Státu Izrael), na počátku 50. let v důsledku mezinárodního a vnitřního politického vývoje dochází k zásadnímu přehodnocení československých postojů směrem k rozvoji vztahů s vybranými arabskými zeměmi. Za určitý milník je v tomto smyslu považován rok 1955, kdy došlo k podepsání přelomové smlouvy o dodávkách československých zbraní Egyptu, což vytvořilo precedens pro\ndalší obdobné budoucí spolupráce Československa s vybranými regionálními aktéry ve vojenské oblasti.

In the context of the 1050th anniversary of the founding of the Prague bishopric, the study focuses on the topic of the first Czech diocese and places it in the Central European context of the Carolingian and Ottonian empires, related ecclesiastical institutions and Christianization processes. In the form of a probe, it traces the importance of the mission for the establishment of the Prague bishopric. In this context, it discusses issues related to sacred architecture, liturgical equipment and written culture inseparably linked to the new Christian education and church administration. Studie se věnuje v souvislosti s výročím 1050 let od založení pražského biskupství tématu první české diecéze a zasazuje ji do středoevropských souvislostí karolínské a otonské říše, souvisejících církevních institucí a christianizačních procesů. Formou sondy sleduje význam misie pro vznik pražského biskupství. V této souvislosti pojednává otázky spojené se sakrální architekturou, liturgickou výbavu a písemnou kulturo neoddělitelně spjatou s novou křesťanskou vzdělaností i s církevní správou.

The research report summarises three years of research of opportunities and limits of participatory housing in the Czech Republic, based on an analysis of the situation abroad, the historical context and the institutional background in the Czech Republic. In the second part we present the results of field research - data analysis from research workshops in partner cities and from an exploratory questionnaire. We present findings on residents' preferences on participation issues, confidence in implementing participatory housing projects, funding issues, governance, barriers or challenges. In the final section, we summarise the opportunities and limitations for participatory housing arising from the cooperation between residents and cities. Výzkumná zpráva přináší shrnutí tříletého výzkumu o možnostech a limitech participativního bydlení v ČR. V první části představujeme konceptualizaci participativního bydlení vycházejí z analýzy zahraniční situace, historického kontextu a institucionálního zázemí v Česku. V druhé části přinášíme výsledky terénního výzkumu – analýzy dat z výzkumných workshopů v partnerských městech a také z explorativního dotazníku. Přinášíme zjištění ohledně preferencí obyvatel v otázkách participace, důvěry v realizaci projektů participativního bydlení, otázek financování, správy, překážek či výzev. V závěrečné části shrnujeme, jaké možnosti a limity participativního bydlení vyplývají ze spolupráce obyvatel s městy.

The paper analyses the possibilities that opened up in the period 1981–1990 for the interdisciplinary research of Historicism in the former Czechoslovakia, given by the founding tradition of the Pilsen symposia. On the one hand, the researchers followed the current ideas of “art and progress” dealt with Ernst Gombrich (1971). From the opposite side came supporters of the idea of “rationality and irrationality” of development as a source of intellectual and aesthetic authenticity of 19th century works, such as jako Rudolf Chadraba, Jiří Ševčík, Helena Lorenzová a Vladimír Macura. Příspěvek zkoumá možnosti, které se otevřely v období 1981–1990 interdisciplinárnímu výzkumu historismu 19. století v tehdejším Československu, v souvislosti se založením tradice plzeňského sympozia. Z jedné strany badatelé sledovali aktuální myšlenky „umění a pokroku“, s nimiž vystoupil Ernst Gombrich (1971). Z opačné strany přicházeli zastánci myšlenky „vývojové racionality a iracionality“ jako zdroje myšlenkové i estetické autenticity děl 19. století, jako Rudolf Chadraba, Jiří Ševčík, Helena Lorenzová a Vladimír Macura.

Ivan Borkovský. An archaeologist between legends, two world wars and two totalitarian regimes

Archaeologist Ivan Borkovský led the technical and later professional research of Prague Castle for more than forty years, in addition to dozens of other sites. He is one of the most prominent personalities of Czechoslovak and Czech archaeology of the Middle Ages. He was a colleague and teacher of a number of prominent archaeologists, historians and architects. Yet there are unknown moments in his personal life and in his fate in the tense periods of the 20th century. In the memoirs of his students and colleagues, there are stories that have become legendary in the nearly fifty years since his death. But most of them are not based on truth. The question is whether Ivan Borkovský himself gave rise to these stories or whether they were written later and what role the personality of the narrator played in them. The presented text focuses on these twists and turns in his life and attempts to confirm or refute the oft-repeated clichés through archival research. Last but not least, the thesis aims to pave the way for a more comprehensive treatment of his scholarly legacy, which will not be possible without an understanding of the pitfalls that accompanied his life. Archeolog Ivan Borkovský vedl více než čtyřicet let technicky a později i odborně výzkum Pražského hradu, vedle toho se věnoval desítkám dalších lokalit. Patří k nejvýraznějším osobnostem československé a české archeologie středověku. Byl kolegou a učitelem celé řady významných archeologů, historiků a architektů. Přesto v jeho osobním životě a v jeho osudech ve vypjatých obdobích 20. století jsou neznámé momenty. Ve vzpomínkových textech jeho žáků a kolegů se vyskytují příběhy, které se za téměř padesát let od jeho smrti staly legendami. Většina z nich se ale nezakládá na pravdě. Je otázkou, zda podnět k těmto příběhům dal Ivan Borkovský sám nebo zda vznikly později a jakou roli v nich sehrála osobnost vypravěče. Předkládaný text se věnuje především těmto zvratům v jeho životě a pokouší se archivním průzkumem potvrdit nebo vyvrátit často opakovaná cliché. V neposlední řadě je cílem práce připravit půdu pro komplexnější zpracování jeho odborného odkazu, které nebude možné bez pochopení úskalí, jež jeho život provázela.

The paper analyses the application of Kirchers’s terminology to the natural phenomena from Bohemia and Moravia. Further, we focused on how Vogt worked with his sources – how far he relied on literature, correspondence, or personal experience.
