The author of the article describes the situation of the Czech Slavonic studies stressing the orientation on comparative and genre studies. He also mentions the impact of social sciences and the long tradition going back to the beginning of the 19th century which may become the basis of the "New Philology" analysed by contemporary American researchers.

To the beginnings of the Czech and Slovak Byzantine Studies

The origins of the Czech and Slovak Byzantine studies are in the author's opinion connected with the names of three significant personalities: historian and philologist P. J. Šafařík, historian J. Bidlo and philologist M. Weingart and there is an evident relation to the development of the Slavonic and Historical studies at Charles University and in the Slavonic Institute in Prague. Vznik české a slovenské byzantologie spojuje autorka se jmény tří osobností - polyhistora P. J. Šafaříka, historika J. Bidla a filologa M. Weingarta. Její počátky souvisí s pražskou slavistickou a historickou školou a s Karlovou univerzitou a Slovanským ústavem.
