Strong personalities or anonymous power? To the charactecter of the Czechoslovak democracy at the beginning of the First Republic

The article is an attempt to apply existing theoretical social models of power on historical situation at the beginning of the first Czechoslovak Republic. It analyses the possible use of Galbraith´s model of power in historiographical discourse of interwar Czechoslovak society. Autor se ve studii pokouší o aplikaci teoretických modelů moci vypracovaných společenskými vědami na historickou situaci v počátcích První republiky. Analyzuje možné uplatnění Galbraithova modelu moci v historiografickém diskurzu o meziválečné české společnosti.

Through Mannerism towards Symbolism - Šaldas' Short Story Analýza

The article interprets the early prose of F. X. Šalda "Analýza" (1891) and focuses mostly on it’s first part, in which its naturalistic narrative changes into a symbolistic text by radically metaphoric language. The literary language thus loses the power of reference and the significance of the text becomes ambivalent. On the one hand the experimental form of the text can be defined in terms of mannerism as an intellectual construct of irrationality, on the other as a combination of language units, semantically most opposite. The main character is depicted in mannerist way as well, being formed together from inorganic objects and simple components - similarly as the paintings by Arcimboldo. Studie interpretuje Šaldovu ranou prózu Analýza (1891), zaměřuje se především na první část, v níž je naturalistická narace převracena v symbolistický text radikální metaforizací jazyka, která vede k ztrátě reference a k významovému zatemnění. Experimentálnost Šaldova textu lze popsat v kategoriích manýrismu jako intelektuální konstrukci iracionality pomocí záměrné kombinace jazykových jednotek významově co nejprotilehlejších. Manýristicky je pak zobrazena i hlavní postava, jež je sestavena z anorganických předmětů a jednoduchých organismů – obdobně jako Arcimboldovy obrazy.

Nourishment of Prague citizens in the first half of 19th century

The study deals with boarding of low and middle class in Prague in the first half of the 19th century in particular on the basis of medical topographies and cookery books. It attends to the question of specific Prague eating habits in those times, too. Studie se zabývá stravováním nižších a středních vrstev obyvatelstva Prahy v první polovině devatenáctého století především na základě lékařských topografií a kuchařských knih. Zamýšlí se i nad otázkou specifických pražských stravovacích zvyklostí v dané době.

Peace movement, developing in the Czech woman’s movement in the last decade before World War I, was represented by a number of women, most important being Pavla Moudra. They appreciated that Berta Suttner had a courage to revolt against the glorification of war and she published articles on horrors of a war, based on her own particular experince. The essay deals with relevant articles in Czech woman’s jounals between 1905 and 1913, follows important anti-war argumentation, which included anti-war stands of most of great history personalities, inhuman impact of wars on women and children, as well as criticism of power elites, including the Catholic Church, which viewed the war as necessary but used it often as an escape solving social problems and for expansion. The most valuable results of these struggles were a Peace Reader (1914) and efforts to influence politics. Mírové hnutí, rozvíjející se v českém ženském hnutí poslední dekádě před 1. světovou válkou, bylo reprezentováno radou osobnosti, z nichž nejaktivnější byla Pavla Moudrá. Oceňovaly, že Suttnerová měla odvahu se vzbouřit proti oslavování války a že bouřila proti válce články postavenými na hrůzných vlastních zkušenostech. Článek přináší přehled názorů v ženských časopisech mezi léty 1905 a 1813, zmiňuje nejdůležitější proti válečnou argumentaci, která zahrnovala kritické přístupy k válkám většiny velkých historických osobností, nelidské dopady válek na ženy a děti, i kritiku mocenských vrstev včetně katolické církve, jež braly válku jako nutný jev, ale ve skutečnosti jim často sloužila k úniku od řešení sociálních problémů nebo k expanzi na úkor druhých národů. Nejcennějším výsledkem tohoto zaujetí pro mír bylo vydání Mírové čítanky roku 1914 a snaha ovlivnit politiku.

The analysis of the journal Československá samostatnost (Czechoslovak Independence) focuses on issues related to constituent values of the Czech society during the World War I. This periodical was the main press organ of the Czechoslovak independence movement abroad and the resulting scale of values illuminates its views. The study pays attention to constituent as well as instrumental values.It explores values, which Czech society accepted as immanent, which had been determined by the war situation. Analýza časopisu Československá samostatnost se soustřeďuje na problematiku konstitutivních hodnot české společnosti v době první světové války. Sledované periodikum bylo hlavním tiskovým orgánem československého zahraničního odboje, a tak výsledná hodnotová škála představuje především názor této skupiny. Studie předkládá hodnoty jak konstitutivní, tak instrumentální a zkoumá, které hodnoty byly akceptovány jako vlastní české společnosti a které byly podmíněny válečnou situací.

The paper is concerned with the Czech political parties election programmes prior to the 1946 election. Leaning on these programmes, the author points out values important for the after-war Czech society. Values included primarily freedom, but also socialism, justice, work for the republic, etc. Studie se zabývá politickými programy českých politických stran před volbami v roce 1946. Autor na základě politických programů poukazuje na hodnoty, které byly pro českou společnost po druhé světové válce důležité. Byla to především svoboda, ale i socialismus, spravedlnost, práce pro republiku atd.

The author is concerned with the first democratic elections in Czechoslovakia after the World War II. The elections took place on 25 May 1946 and the Czech Communist Party came out as the winner. Apart from the election itself, the study contains also an analysis of the causes leading to the victory of the Communist Party, which turned into a totalitarian party and took over political power in Czechoslovakia. Autor se ve své studii zabývá prvními svobodnými volbami v Československu po druhé světové válce. Tyto volby se uskutečnily 26. 5. 1946 a vyhrála v nich KSČ. Ve studii se věnuje pozornost nejen volbám, ale i příčinám vítězství této komunistické strany, která se za dva roky stala totalitní stranou a mocí v Československu.

The difference between a democracy and a dictatorship means the difference between the possibility to change the political regime by elections or by a violent means. In elections 1946 a princip of proportional representation, combined with fixed candidates list, was applied. The electoral law enfranchised citizen from the age of 18, and included armed forces and later, members of the Police forces. Representatives of political parties decided that the Agrarian Party was not to be renewed. The elections took place six months later than originally planned. Lists of electors included only Czech and Slovak citizens or other citizens of Slavic origin. The electoral success of the Communist Party was assisted also by the enormous contribution of the Soviet Union to the liquidation of Nazism as well as by the fact, that the Land Office, distributing land in border areas, was in the hands of the Communists. Volbami a možností zbavit se režimu bez krveprolití se od sebe liší demokracie a diktatura. Volebními zákony ovlivňuje nositel moci volební výsledky pro své potřeby. Při volbách v roce 1946 se z „nechuti experimentovat“ uplatnil princip poměrné volby, která byla doplněna vázanými kandidátními listinami. Proti původním dohodám se volby konaly o půl roku později; představitelé stran se shodli na neobnovení zemědělské strany. Všeobecné volební právo od 18 let se vztahovalo také na příslušníky branné moci a později i na příslušníky bezpečnosti. Představitelé politických stran neumožnili vznik dalších stran. Do voličských seznamů byli zapsáni jen občané české, slovenské nebo jiné slovanské národnosti. K volbám přistoupilo bez volební zkušenosti 14 ročníků voličů. Úspěchu KSČ napomohl i podíl armády Sovětského svazu na likvidaci nacismu a okolnost, že půdu v příhraničních oblastech přiděloval pozemkový úřad ovládaný komunistickou stranou.
