Comparative Evaluation of Websites Used as Teaching Aids in ELT

Tato práce se zabývá hodnocením dvou různých webových stránek, které poskytují materiály pro rozvoj obecné angličtiny. Nejprve teoretická část vysvětluje, co je to proces vyučování a popisuje jeho součásti. Následně definuje roli učitele a žáka a poté definuje komunikativní kompetenci a specificky se zabývá znalostí jazyka a jejími částmi. Další část se zaměřuje na moderní materiální didaktické prostředky, u kterých je důraz kladen na definování učení se s podporou počítače, internetu, ale hlavně na webovou stránku. Webová stránka je následně hlavním předmětem diskuse zahrnující definice její role, funkcí, výhod a nevýhod v učení se anglickému jazyku. Poslední část teoretické části stanovuje hodnotící kritéria pro praktickou část. Praktická část pak aplikuje hodnotící kritéria a porovnává dvě vybrané webové stránky, aby se mohlo určit, která z nich je vhodnější pro učení se anglickému jazyku.

This bachelor thesis deals with colloquial vocabulary in the script of the movie 'Pulp Fiction'. The theoretical part provides explanation of vocabulary layers, colloquial English, and taboo terms. The first part also focuses on the taboo word 'fuck' and the processes of expletive infixation and syntactic interposing which are connected to taboo terms. The aim of the practical part is to determine possible syntactic positions and the function of the words 'fucking', 'motherfucking', 'fucked up', and the insert 'the fuck' in the sentences from the script of 'Pulp Fiction'. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vrstvou hovorové slovní zásoby ve scénáři filmu "Pulp
Fiction". Teoretická část vysvětluje pojmy vrstev slovní zásoby, kolokviální angličtiny a
jazykového tabu. První část se také zaměřuje na slovo jazykového tabu "fuck" a na procesy
nazvané "expletive infixation" a "syntactic interposing", které se pojí ke slovům jazykového
tabu. Cílem praktické části je určit možné syntatické pozice a funkce slov "fucking",
"motherfucking", "fucked up" a "the fuck" ve větách ze scénáře k "Pulp Fiction".

Finite vs. Non-Finite Structures in Fiction

The aim of this paper is to describe the ratio of occurrences of finite and non-finite structures in English texts of fictional literature, especially with regard to their syntactic functions. The theoretical part provides the description of individual types of finite and non-finite clauses and their expected use in selected texts. In the practical part, the analysis is based on the theory introduced in the first part of the paper. The actual occurrence of these structures in individual syntactic functions is studied on several samples of fictional literature and the differences in their use are clarified.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the Citizenship Schools and their achievements in the Civil Rights Movement. The introductory chapter provides some insight into the history of voting rights of women and African Americans in the United States of America. The theoretical part also provides information about Septima Clark's personal life and work. Then, earlier educational programs that served African Americans are described. The following practical section presents the establishment and achievements of the Citizenship Schools. The final chapter is based on the analysis of the goals, functionality, and successes of the Citizenship Schools with the Freedom Schools, and a comparison between the two.

Student se ve své bakalářské práci bude zabývat problematikou autonomie v procesu učení se anglické výslovnosti u vysokoškolských studentů. V úvodu teoretické části nejprve definuje koncept autonomie, který bude následně diskutovat ve vztahu k osvojování si cizího jazyka v kontextu vzdělávacího systému České republiky. Student dále stručně představí fonologický systém současné angličtiny a uvede relevantní faktory ovlivňující osvojení si výslovnosti dospělými uživateli jazyka. V praktické části práce realizuje vlastní výzkumné šetření s cílem zjistit, zda a do jaké míry jsou student autonomní při osvojování si anglické výslovnosti. Pro sběr dat použije dotazovací techniky.

This bachelor thesis deals with racist issue in contemporary American novels, The Help, The Secret Life of Bees and The Dry Grass of August. It focuses on the discrimination against Afro-Americans, the segregation of black people and white people and the limitation of the rights of Afro-Americans. The thesis depicts the relations of black maids, the white children in the maids' charge and their parents. In addition to displaying various attitudes of white people towards racism, the work discloses examples of open and hidden racism as well.

Use of Second Life in Teaching Speaking in ELT

The work deals with the use of a virtual world Second Life for the purpose of English
language teaching with the focus on developing learners’ speaking skill. In the theoretical
part of the thesis, the development of communicative competence is discussed with special
attention to a recent model of second language speaking competence by Goh and Burns.
Specific types of speaking activities are presented as well as the general concept of the
speaking skill. The last chapter of the theoretical part defines the virtual environment of
Second Life and its specifics. In the practical part of the thesis, speaking activities
conducted in the virtual environment of Second Life are evaluated, based on defined
criteria for a qualitative observation, in order to determine their benefits and limitations for
developing learners’ speaking skill.

The aim of this bachelor paper is to provide an analysis of John Betjeman's poetry to trace topographical elements in his work. The first chapter provides a historical and cultural background concerning the shift from Victorian to post-war Britain, focusing on demographic changes in urban and rural life. Then, the transformation of Victorian and modern architecture is examined. The analytical part explores Betjeman's relation to different places, specifically to cities, suburbs and the countryside and his perception of architecture, especially ecclesiastical.

Tato práce je věnována využití dramatických technik ve výuce anglického jazyka na základní škole jako prostředku rozvíjejícího mluvený projev žáků. V teoretické části jsou uváděna východiska pro následující empirické šetření. Teoretická část se zabývá teorií produktivní řečové dovednosti mluvení a principy dramatické výchovy a popisuje dramatické techniky ve vztahu k rozvoji mluveného projevu žáků. V praktické části je popsané výzkumné šetření, které hodnotí postoj žáků k dramatickým aktivitám.

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza hodnotících výrazů obsažených v korpusu knižních recenzí. V teoretické části je nejprve popsán fenomén hodnocení a hodnotících výrazů obecně a poté jsou představeny přístupy k jejich analýze. Tato část také obsahuje rozbor zkoumaného žánru knižních recenze s důrazem na hodnocení. Praktická část obsahuje popis metodologie a analyzovaného korpusu. Na základě teoretické části je vytvořena struktura pro analýzu korpusu. Data jsou prezentována kvantitativně i kvalitativně.
