LEARNING STYLES IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

2015 - Czech This thesis deals with learning styles and their usage within the English language classes. I have focused the theoretical part on the definition of the term learning style and its correlation to other terms from the similar fields of study. It is also here, where I indicate the classification of learning styles. The classification is based on the work of many authors and on the adequate utilization of learning styles within the English language teaching. On top of that, I focus on the teaching styles related issues and I discuss the position of the English language within the contemporary educational system in the Czech Republic. In the empirical part of my thesis I try to analyze the learning styles of a group of third grade English language students at the pedagogical secondary school. To achieve this goal I used a pen and paper interview which enabled me to gain the data necessary to describe the learning styles of the individual students as well as the whole group. Based on the acquired information I tried to propose some changes which could help me to improve my teaching approach in the future. Rigorózní práce se zabývá styly učení v rámci hodin anglického jazyka. V teoretické části své práce se soustředím na vysvětlení základních pojmů souvisejících se styly učení, hledám jejich shody a rozdíly. Uvádím zde taktéž klasifikaci stylů učení, a to jak podle jednotlivých autorů, tak podle upotřebitelnosti stylů učení ve výuce anglického jazyka. Mimo jiné se věnuji otázce stylů učení a popsáno je také zařazení anglického jazyka v kurikulárních dokumentech České republiky, opět s ohledem na styly učení. V empirické části práce se snažím zjistit styly učení u jedné konkrétní třídy studentek střední odborné školy pedagogické. K provedení případové studie je použit strukturovaný rozhovor, na jehož základě jsou porovnány styly učení jednotlivých studentek a následně vytvořen popis stylů učení třídy jako celku. Zjištěných výsledků je použito k posouzení mé dosavadní práce se třídou a k navržení případných změn v další výuce. Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia. Novel roles for the corpus allatum hormone in the cost of sexual interactions in the linden bug Pyrrhocoris apterus

2015 - Czech The decrease of lifespan by mating is a common, yet poorly understood occurrence. Juvenile hormone (JH) is widely believed to mediate shortened lifespan in insect, caused by mating. In this study we tested the role of JH in the linden bug (Pyrrhocoris apterus) by removal of the corpus allatum gland and thus the JH source. We then proceeded to study the lifespan of mated animals vs. virgin animals. Virgin animals without JH live longer as was expected. The effect on mated animals is however different between males and females. Surprisingly in females, JH seems to lower the cost of mating. In males, on the other hand, the cost of mating seems to be independent on JH levels. Another surprising conclusion is that the level of JH in females affects the lifespan of males that mate with such females. Adipokinetic hormone counteracts oxidative stress elicited in insects by hydrogen peroxide: in vivo and in vitro study

2013 - Czech The involvement of members of Adipokinetic hormone (AKH) family in regulation of response to oxidative stress (OS) was investigated in the present study. OS was elicited in the insect body by exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide. In vivo experiments reveal that injection of hydrogen peroxide into the haemocoel of the firebug, Pyrrhocoris apterus, increases the level of AKH in the central nervous system (CNS) and in the haemolymph. The injection of hydrogen peroxide also increases the mortality of experimental bugs, whereas co-injection of hydrogen peroxide with Pyrap-AKH reduces mortality to control levels. Importantly, an increase in haemolymph protein carbonyl (an OS biomarker) levels is decreased to control levels when hydrogen peroxide is co-injected with Pyrap-AKH. Similar results were obtained using in vitro experiments. OS biomarkers such as malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls were significantly enhanced upon exposure of isolated CNS to hydrogen peroxide in vitro, whereas co-treatment of the CNS with hydrogen peroxide and Pyrap-AKH reduces their level significantly. Catalase activity was measured as well and the same pattern was observed. The results of the present study provide strong support on the feedback regulation between oxidative stressors and AKH action, and implicate AKH in counteracting OS.
