Can states shape the dissemination of a small literature? A comparison across Europe
Vimr, Ondřej
2020 - Czech
Almost every European country has institutionalised the support of literary export. Do the subsidies shape the circulation of small literatures? Based on semi-structured interviews with acquisition editors of publishing houses in five European countries, the paper provides an insight into the ways the subsidies impact their decision-making. The City Dweller´s Distrust of Folk. The Narrative Figure
Jedličková, Alice
2020 - Czech
This paper focuses on a strategy used to represent rural people, or “simple folk,” in narratives whose goal is to motivate readers to reassess their own attitudes towards the folk. The authorial intent of such works draws from the idea that traditional values are not appreciated and therefore must be discovered and protected (e.g., language, the past, the rural folk). Urban dwellers’ prejudiced perception of the countryside represented in such narratives can be simply formulated through contrasting images: for example, the progress, education, and conveniences offered by the city versus the backwardness, ignorance, and poverty of the countryside. This strategy is based on the distrustful or dismissive views of city people towards the folk as implicitly voiced by the narrator or by a specific character in the narrative. In contrast, we also find rather explicit counterarguments against these views in the speech of the narrator or in the speech, actions, and behaviors of the characters. In rural-themed prose from the 1850s through the 1870s, the subject matter of this study, this constellation of ideas and opposing ideas is regularly reflected in both the story and the narrative discourse and forms a stable narrative device, which substantially contributes to forming the narrative point-of-view and its effectiveness in persuading readers. In some works, this narrative device permeates the entire text and affects its genre - in Božena Němcová’s short story “Poor Folk” the “slice of life” genre intertwines with the genre of argument: every situation presented is in some regards an argument against the previously established idea that “city people distrust the folk.” “To miss out on the Region, the People and Life because of Castles and Ruins…” Tensions between Historicism and Regionalism using Zbudovská Blata as an Example
Hrdina, Martin
2020 - Czech
The region of Zbudovská Blata including its residents became known throughout Czech society at the beginning of the 20th century mainly thanks to the efforts of writers K. Klostermann and J. Holeček. The purpose of this essay is to recall the key circumstance of the literal presentation of the rural environment, which was a departure from romantic historicism of the 19th century, and to describe the role which the writers above bestowed upon the Blata residents in the context of Czech-speaking society. While Holeček used the Blata surroundings for purposes of a multifaceted polemic with the aristocracy, the conciliatory Klostermann created a timeless symbol from that same environment, thanks to which he secured a permanent place in Czech culture with his novel Mlhy na Blatech (Mist over Blata). Na počátku 20. století vstoupila do povědomí české společnosti lokalita Zbudovských blat a její obyvatelstvo, a to především zásluhou spisovatelů Karla Klostermanna a Josefa Holečka. Some Unknown Březina-Related Manuscripts in the Jakub Deml fund in the LA MCL in Prague
Iwashita, Daniela; Kořínková, Šárka
2019 - Czech
Otokar Březina, both as a man and a subject, belongs among the central constants of Deml’s entire work. In spite of this, however, Deml’s Březina-related manuscripts have not yet undergone proper examination. This article reports on the authors’ research into Deml’s texts on Březina which had to be retrieved, identified and reconstructed from eight mislabelled and disorganized boxes in the Jakub Deml fund in the Literary Archive of the MCL. The entire collection of manuscripts compiled includes two further boxes of material labelled as “fragments of My Testimony about Otokar Březina”. The authors therefore succeeded in assembling almost the entire manuscript of My Testimony (representing 97% of the approximately 1,000 numbered pages). Both the manuscript structure and parts of the typeset proofs testify to the gradual genesis of the book in four separate sections, and also throw light on the significance of certain changes (e.g. that the integrative as well as subversive part of the work – namely the marginal commentary – came into being only after the printing of the manuscript). Further, the authors managed to identify five bigger fragments of Deml’s unpublished lectures from the years 1929 to 1942. Above all, the article discusses the text of a lecture (59 preserved pages) given by Deml in Velké Meziříčí in 1929, which at the time caused considerable scandal and led to Deml being prosecuted for lèse-majesté against the then Czechoslovak President, until now it had been known only from secondary sources and citations. From the manuscript of the lecture it is clear that Deml had cited not only Březina’s criticism of Masaryk’s philosophy but also his praise of the President’s moral leadership while in office. At the same time the lecture represents the very first version of Deml’s conclusion to My Testimony about Otokar Březina. Two other significant fragments are: first, a fragment (83 preserved pages) of a three-hour lecture, given by Deml in Brno in 1931 and dealing with Otokar Březina’s life and philosophy, and, second, a fragment from 1942 which discusses, among other things, the significance of contradictory statements in Březina’s conversations and letters, which, according to Deml, Březina himself did not consider an integral part of his work. Téma a postava Otokara Březiny patří k ústředním konstantám celého Demlova díla. Básníkovy rukopisy o Březinovi však dosud nebyly probádány. Článek přibližuje výsledky výzkumu, v němž autorky v mylně označených a neuspořádaných osmi kartonech fondu Jakuba Demla v Literárním archivu PNP hledaly Demlovy texty o Otokaru Březinovi, identifikovaly je a rekonstruovaly. „Time does not stand still, my friend...”Narrated and experienced time in the fiction of Teréza Nováková
Jedličková, Alice; Piorecká, Kateřina
2019 - Czech
The main topic in Teréza Nováková's prose work Děti čistého živého came to be the religious plurality of villages and solitary residences around Proseč. The author decided to follow the fortunes of a fairly large group of characters over several decades. Hence the literary critics described this work of fiction as a novel chronicle. The author was also induced to do this by her ethnographically erudite approach to descriptions of the environments and the usual activities of the characters speaking together in their authentic dialect. However, the author's intention was different, as testified by the initial outline of the work, the author's diary, the novel manuscript and personal correspondence. This is also confirmed by an analysis of the narrative structure: by developing a novel methodology based on objectivizing narration and bold time structure, Nováková succeeded in creating a novel on the individual forms of time lived under the burden of the irreversible, inexorable march of physical time. Assessing the reliability of stress as a feature of authorship attribution in syllabic and accentual syllabic verse
Plecháč, Petr; Birnbaum, D. J.
2019 - English
This work builds on a recent study by one of the authors, which shows that statistics about versification may be used as a feature in the process of authorship attribution. One such statistic is what we have called the stress profile of a poem, a vector consisting of frequencies of stressed syllables at particular metrical positions. Our initial hypothesis was that because syllabic versification (SV) regulates by definition the number of syllables in a line but not the distribution of stresses, it allows authors to individualize their rhythmical style much more than accentual syllabic versification (ASV), where the distribution of stresses is primarily determined by meter. For that reason, we expected the stress profile to be a more reliable indicator of authorship in Spanish SV than in Czech or German ASV. This hypothesis, however, was not supported by our analysis. For most of our samples, German ASV had lower accuracy than Spanish, which we had predicted, but, contrary to our expectations, the accuracy for Czech ASV and Spanish SV were more or less the same. This result led us to hypothesize further that the traditional labels SV and ASV were misleading and we sought to measure the tonic entropy of our data. In this case, Spanish SV, as expected, was found to be the least tonically regular, while there was a significant difference between the two ASV systems: the values for Czech were even closer to Spanish than to the low-scoring German system. This explains why our initial grouping of Czech and German together into a single ASV category was insufficiently nuanced. Quantitative Approaches to Versification
Plecháč, Petr; Barry, P.; Skulacheva, T.; Bermúdez-Sabel, H.; Kolár, Robert
2019 - English
This volume presents a wide range of quantitative approaches to versification. It comprises various methodological perspectives ranging from simple descriptive statistics to advanced machine learning methods (such as support vector machines, random forests or neural networks) as well as material covering a large span of time and languages: from very ancient versifications (Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittie, Ancient Greek), through medieval (Old English, Old Icelandic, Old Saxon) and Renaissance verse to modern experiments (free verse, concrete poetry), from English and Russian through Spanish and German to Portuguese and Catalan. Not only written, but also spoken poetry has been analyzed. The book covers multiple topics. What they all share in common is that versification is being studied in the context of other linguistic phenomena that may affect or determine it. Analyses of large corpora go hand in hand with comparative approaches. It is shown that quantitative approaches can be used for the purpose of authorship attribution, to build reasonable typologies as well as to understand why certain forms play such a dominant roles in our cultural tradition(s). Keywords: versification; quantitative verse studies; prosody Fulltext is available at external website.
