Southern Gothic in the works of Flannery O'Connor and Carson McCullers

The main aim of this master thesis is to analyse the short stories of Flannery O‘Connor and Carson McCullers with the attention being paid to the gothic elements of violence, loneliness and freakishness. Since the authors were the most prominent writers of the American Southern literature, the general characterization of the American South and its socio-historical context are provided. The theoretical part deals with the Southern literature and its phenomenon of the twentieth century, the Southern Renaissance. The terms Southern Gothic and grotesque are also clarified. This bachelor thesis is concerned with the image of New York City in the folk music of the 1960s, specifically in the song lyrics of the North American singer-songwriters Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Fred Neil, Phil Ochs, John Phillips, John Sebastian and Joey Levine. The theoretical part provides historical and cultural background of the city and its folk music in the chosen time period. The analytical part then explores the main themes and tendencies in the depiction of the metropolis in the chosen lyrics. The results of the thesis are summarized in the conclusion. This bachelor thesis focuses on depiction of immigration in selected short stories from Ways of Sunlight written by Samuel Selvon. The theoretical part covers postcolonial and West Indian literature, history of immigration from West Indies, and overall Caribbean experience. The analytical part is a comparative study that selects four short stories set in London and examines similarities and differences in how they depict immigrant life. The bachelor thesis is concerned with Raymond Chandler and the American Hard-Boiled School. The first chapters of the thesis describe life of the American author of detective novels and his work and define terms such as detective fiction or the American Hard-Boiled School. A detailed analysis of Chandler's two books, The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye, forms the core of the thesis. The analysis is focused on the individual aspects of the detective Chandler created, detective Philip Marlowe. The fourth chapter deals with the connection between Chandler's Philip Marlowe and Shakespeare's Hamlet. The fifth chapter is concerned with film noir and the film adaptations of The Big Sleep. The sixth chapter covers the summary of my findings. This work will primarily deal with the differences between the literal and figurative terms. After that the main focus will be to divide metaphor and metonymy as two of the most essential figures of speech based on several studies conducted by experts in the field of linguistics. The document also covers basic explanation of the concepts of public speaking. The practical part will then be focused on these findings in order to map metaphor and metonymy in the speeches of Queen Elizabeth II. A more detailed analysis will be conducted in order to demonstrate linguistic analysis and to determine the intention of the use of metaphor and metonymy in the context. This work focuses on the contrasts and similarities between the portrayals of the British and the US characters of a tramp and the tramp cultures in memoirs Down and Out in Paris and London (1933) by George Orwell, and The Road (1907) by Jack London. The integral part of the paper is a subsequent critical assessment of the dominant culture and ideology, which played a substantial role in the establishment and formation of the tramp culture. The bachelor thesis deals with learner-centeredness in teaching English in lower secondary classes. The paper is divided into two parts. Within the theoretical framework of the thesis, the historical development of learner-centeredness is outlined, learner-centred principles are analysed in detail, and a characteristic of the role of the learner and the teacher is provided. In addition, several advantages and disadvantages of this approach are discussed as well as brief characteristics of a lower secondary English learner. This bachelor thesis deals with Montessori principles and compares them with general objectives of teaching English at elementary schools in the Czech Republic. The paper is divided into two parts. The theoretical part introduces Montessori principles which are compared with modern principles in English language teaching. Then, the objectives of teaching reading comprehension are described. This bachelor thesis is focused on two current movies Django Unchained and 12 Years a Slave, which are both dedicated to American slavery in the nineteenth century, specifically two years before the Civil War. The aim of this thesis is to find and analyse four main elements racial stereotypes, slavery, freedom, and revenge. This paper also tries to prove that all these elements were not only closely related but also significantly influenced the lives of the slaves as well as their white slavers who had been involved in this inhumane institution.
