Workforce allocation in self-sufficient economy in Late Iron Age
Olševičová, K.; Danielisová, Alžběta
2015 - anglický
We present an abstract model of workforce allocation of the Late Iron Age self-sufficient settlement. The model enables experimenting with parameters (the ratio of strong and weak workforce, the impact of bad weather, the ratio of targeted overproduction) during the harvest season with the aim to explore the agricultural bottlenecks (short periods per year when increased labour input is needed). Results of three experiments are presented. The model is extendable and is designed to be applied in archaeological research of socio-economic collapses.

Model of Carrying Capacity - System Dynamics in NetLogo and Stella
Olševičová, K.; Cimler, R.; Tomášková, H.; Danielisová, Alžběta

We compare implementations of system dynamics of Celtic settlement using two tools - NetLogo and Stella. The objective of the model is to catch the relations among the population growth, the production growth and the land use with respect to agricultural strategies. Our main objective is to better understand the Celtic society and economy and its sudden collapse. More broadly we are interested in the applicability of multi-method simulation (agent-based approach enhanced with system dynamics and process modelling) in archaeological research.

Applying System Dynamics and Agent-based Modelling in Archaeological Simulation
Olševičová, K.; Danielisová, Alžběta
2014 - anglický
We apply the social simulation to the cultural milieu of the late Iron Age in Central Europe and its economic strategies, especially on the subsistence and the carrying capacity of the settlement agglomeration in relation to the daily economic needs of its inhabitants. By means of the computational models of the economics of the particular central settlement (Staré Hradisko oppidum) and its hinterland we aim to verify hypotheses about the economic sustainability in case self-supplying is applied. To achieve this, the agent-based modelling, cellular automata approach and system dynamics modelling are used. In the paper we present four alternative scenarios of population dynamics (baseline and three versions of depopulation) and four alternative scenarios of food production and agricultural practices (baseline and three types of external events). The set of models for all scenarios was implemented in NetLogo and Stella. Outputs of the models are subject of interests of archaeologists and according to their feedback the models will be refined and extended.

From single feature to settlement pattern, landscape and society: a methodological approach to castellological research
Novák, David
2014 - anglický
Fortified manors are in the scope of interest from the 19th century and at present, we have solid and complex knowledge base, which can be evaluated to obtain interesting results. Most of the published papers dealing with fortified manors have undergone basic chronological and typological analysis without further interest in their spatial attributes or their relation to the hinterland. This fact and underestimation of quantitative analysis and statistics may be explained in the context of the culture-history paradigm, still prevailing in Czech archaeology. Alternatively, perhaps, it is just a result of the methodological inability of many archaeologists to deal with large data sets. As a response to this situation, the author attempts to look at fortified manors in another way - through statistical methods and using GIS. Paper is aimed to present methodology used in case study of selected region in western part of Central Bohemia as a sample.

Fuzzy Methods in Land Use Modeling for Archaeology
Machálek, T.; Cimler, R.; Olševičová, K.; Danielisová, Alžběta
2013 - anglický
The general objective of our research is to develop the complex agentbased simulation of ancient Celtic society population, food production and economics. To achieve this we proposed the agent-based agricultural model of land suitability for miscellaneous farming systems. The behaviour of agents is controlled by a fuzzy rule-based system. The system encodes farmers' agricultural knowledge as regards the decision where to apply specific farming method. Corresponding linguistic variables describe (1) the distance of individual land patches from the household, (2) the slope of the land, (3) the yield of individual land patches and (4) total harvest as a percentage of inhabitants' annual nutritional requirement. To prevent high-frequency spatial changes in land suitability caused by time-dependent stochastic nature of the crop yields, our model performs result smoothing using spatial signal filtering.

Early Modern archaeological assemblages from Prague Castle and period written and iconographic sources
Blažková, Gabriela; Frolík, Jan; Žegklitzová-Veselá, Jana
2012 - anglický
The main goal of this work was to introduce Early Modern finds of ceramics and glass from Prague Castle. As a starting source for this study were used eight find collections of cesspits originating from the Prague Castle area belong to houses located along the northern and western edge of the Third Castle Courtyard. The above mentioned collections of finds represent mainly features unearthed in the years 1925-1932 or 1957. The only recently discovered cesspit represents a feature (OBJ. 1) from the House No. 34/IV on the Jiřské square. The study is attempting to answer the question, in the cooperation with archive sources, how much can the cesspit-fillings reflect social position of their users.

Bohemian finds of stove tiles with the signature "HANS BERMAN"
Soukup, Michal B.; Soukupová, M.; Šrejber, A.
2012 - anglický
The article looks at one phenomenon of material culture of 16th century in Europe - stove tiles produced by Hans Berman workshops in central Germany. The finds of renaissance stove tiles with the signature and the date - "HANS BERMAN 155X" or "HANS BERMAN 1562" are known from the area of today's Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Sweden (south), the island part of Denmark and Latvia (Riga). From Bohemia and Moravia these stove tiles were not yet published. In 2007 in collection of Regional Museum in Teplice two complexes of fragments of stove tiles with signature HANS BERMAN 155X were detected. Later similar fragments have been found on the other Bohemian sites. Most of them are located in northern Bohemia (Bílina, Krupka, Prosetice, Teplice), and two sites in eastern part of the country (Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Pecka). Frontal parts of these stove tiles are decorated with 6 various reliefs - "Adam and Eve and the Tree of Life", "Crucifixion of Jesus Christ", portraits - "elector Maurice of Saxony", "August of Saxony", an "unknown nobleman" and "Architecture - church window". It has been newly shown, that production of Hans Berman workshop was in 16th century also distributed to the Bohemia.

Evidence of tin coating on archaeological ferrous artefacts by voltammetry of microparticules (VMP)
Ottenwelter, Estelle; Costa, V.
2010 - anglický
Voltammetry of microparticules (VMP) using a paraffinimpregnated graphite electrode (PIGE) to transfer material directly from the artefacts to an electrochemical cell, was applied on two objects from Medieval Ages covered by a grey metallic coating in a variable state of conservation and appearance as a non invasive analytical method to characterise artefacts. Results have shown that the light grey metallic surface layers observed on both objects present different chemical composition, which could be determined in a selective way, following their stratigraphical location of the artefacts.
