The use of apocalyptic figures in Jan Hus' work
Cermanová, Pavlína
2015 - Czech
The study focuses on the use of apocalyptic figures in the treatises and thinking of Jan Hus. The question if Hus could be perceived as an apocalyptic oriented theologian in in the centre of attention. The originally theologically defined hermeneutic tool of critic developed gradually into a means describing the actual situation of the fight against Antichrist. The apocalyptic concept was necessarily associated with Hus' ecclesiology.

Organization of the protest action against Hus's burning at the stake
Novotný, Robert
2015 - Czech
Based on a prosopographical analysis, the study attempts to capture the organizational context of the origin of the protest letter against Hus's burning at the stake from 2 September 1415. One of the main conclusions is that the majority of the signatories from the ranks of the lower nobility added their seals to the protest action rather from loyalty to their powerful neighbours than expressing their own confessional position.

His Postila katolická (The Catholic Postil) is remarkable for many reasons, this article focuses attention just on the narrative level of exempla. Moreover, if we join exempla from the postil and his translation of Manni's Eternal Infernal Jail, Steyer becomes one of the most important producer of exempla of his time. The article attempts unveil some aspects of his strategy how to work with exempla. On few cases, it shows various interpretative and literary historical problems.

Consultatio as a genre of contemporary religious-political controversy and Consultatio of J. A. Comenius
Balík, Vojtěch
2015 - Czech
The Latin term consultatio (consultation) in the 16th and 17th centuries took the headlines primarily in specialized medical publications, and later in legal as well. It seems that this term then derivatively became popular in written public debate, or rather in the religious-political controversy. Formally as consultatio (often accompanied by attributes such as utilis, salubris, orthodoxa, catholica...) were presented not only serious professional works, but very often pamphlets etc. However, if Comenius decided to launch its flagship life's work just as Consultatio, he surely just referred to the traditional genre, but - as in other titles of his works - he reached into his deep sense of the word and engaged it in the service of his plan. In addition, as we know, he had before his eyes a real consultation as well, the assembly or meeting of politicians, representatives of interreligious dialogue, etc.

Political Marxism on two conceptions of democracy
Brabec, Martin
2014 - Czech
The article presents an analysis of democracy from the point of view of Political Marxism. Political Marxism is new stream in contemporary Marxism, which is based on the works of American historian Robert Brenner and the Canadian political scientist Ellen Wood. She distinguishes between two conceptions of democracy. The ancient concept of democracy grew out of a historical experience which had conferred a unique civic status on subordinate classes, creating in particular that unprecedented formation, the peasant citizen. Our contemporary concept of democracy, originating not in Athenian democracy but in European feudalism and culminating in liberal capitalism, with the major milestones, like Magna Carta and 1688, marks the ascent of the propertied classes. In this case, it is not a question of peasants liberating themselves from the political domination of their overlords but lords themselves asserting their independent powers against the claims of monarchy.

Identificatory functions of the description in a fictional text
Koťátko, Petr
2014 - Czech
The author argues that descriptions used in narrative fiction typically function as incomplete descriptions of complete entities, rather than as descriptions of incomplete entities. This presupposes a specific account of fictional worlds and their inhabitants.

The Philosophy of Purposeless Time
Hauser, Michael
2014 - English
The article addresses the issue of leisure in the sense of ancient schole. It strives to uncover the relationship between Aristotelian concept of theoretical activity and schole as vacuity. It shows a paradoxical character of schole as purposeless time that forms condition for a meaningful activity. How, then, to restore schole as vacuity today, when colonization of time expands?

Literary modernism and the truth behind hoaxes. The symbolist conception of hoaxes between gnoseological enthusiasm and epistemological scepticism
Řezníková, Lenka
2014 - Czech
The study focuses the shifts in the representations of hoax in the Czech literature at the end of the 19th century and their epistemological context. Whereas in previous decades mystifications were particularly represented as a social practice, at the turn of the century they free itself from existing ethical standards and raise to a legitimate aesthetic and gnoseological category. This shift in the conception of hoaxes reflected the general rise in the scepticism, which at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries cast doubt over illusory obviousness of empirical evidence. Despite this epistemological scepticism, however, a new conception showed some gnoseological optimism, i.e. did not exclude the possibility of gaining knowledge as such. However it postulated knowledge of a new and unempirical kind reflecting the danger of delusion.
