The June issue of Global Economic Outlook presents the regular monthly overview of recent and expected developments in selected territories, focusing on key economic variables: inflation, GDP growth, leading indicators, interest rates, exchange rates and commodity prices. In this issue, we also assess the accuracy of the forecasts for 2015 published in Global Economic Outlook in 2015 and 2014. The institutions under comparison forecasted GDP growth relatively accurately (except for an unexpectedly deep GDP contraction in Brazil and Russia) and overestimated their inflation forecasts and consequently also their interest rate forecasts (again with the exception of Brazil and Russia). Červnové vydání měsíčníku Globální ekonomický výhled přináší pravidelný přehled aktuálního i očekávaného vývoje ve vybraných teritoriích se zaměřením na hlavní ekonomické veličiny: inflaci, růst HDP, předstihové ukazatele, úrokové sazby, měnové kurzy a ceny komodit. V tomto čísle je naše pozornost dále zaostřena na vyhodnocení přesnosti předpovědí pro rok 2015 publikovaných v Globálním ekonomickém výhledu v loňském a předloňském roce. Srovnávané instituce relativně přesně prognózovaly růst HDP (vyjma neočekávané hloubky propadu HDP v Brazílii a Rusku) a nadhodnocovaly (opět bez Brazílie a Ruska) prognózy inflace a v souladu s tím i úrokových sazeb.

The September issue of Global Economic Outlook presents the regular monthly overview of recent and expected developments in selected territories, focusing on key economic variables: inflation, GDP growth, leading indicators, interest rates, exchange rates and commodity prices. In this issue, we also focus on the closing of the output gap in OECD countries in the current low-inflation environment. We point out that the output gap is currently closing at near-zero inflation rates rather than at rates close to 2% (corresponding to the generally accepted price stability criterion). The current output gap and inflation outlooks signal a gradual return to the output gap closing at consumer inflation rates of approximately 2%. Zářijové vydání měsíčníku Globální ekonomický výhled přináší pravidelný přehled aktuálního i očekávaného vývoje ve vybraných teritoriích se zaměřením na hlavní ekonomické veličiny: inflaci, růst HDP, předstihové ukazatele, úrokové sazby, měnové kurzy a ceny komodit. V tomto čísle je naše pozornost dále zaostřena na problematiku uzavírání mezery výstupu v zemích OECD v současném nízkoinflačním prostředí. Je zde poukázáno na tendenci, že k uzavírání mezery výstupu v současném období dochází nikoli v blízkosti 2% hodnoty inflace (odpovídající všeobecně přijímanému kritériu cenové stability), ale na hodnotách blízkých spíše nulové úrovni. Aktuální výhledy však signalizují pozvolný návrat k předchozí praxi, kdy se mezera výstupu uzavírala přibližně při 2% spotřebitelské inflaci.

Do Borders Really Slash Trade?

National borders reduce trade, but most estimates of the border effect seem puzzlingly large. We show that major methodological innovations of the last decade combine to shrink the border effect to a one-third reduction in international trade flows worldwide. The border effect varies across regions: it is substantial in emerging countries, but relatively small in OECD countries. For the computation we collect 1,271 estimates of the border effect reported in 61 studies, codify 32 aspects of study design that may influence the estimates, and use Bayesian model averaging to take into account model uncertainty in meta-analysis. Our results suggest that methods systematically affect the estimated border effects. Especially important is the level of aggregation, measurement of internal and external distance, control for multilateral resistance, and treatment of zero trade flows. We find no evidence of publication bias. Existence hraničních bariér snižuje objem mezinárodního obchodu, ale většina odhadů tohoto efektu je až překvapivě veliká. V tomto článku ukazujeme, že nové metody pro odhady tohoto efektu představené během poslední dekády snižují implikovaný efekt hranic na 33% redukci mezinárodního obchodu. Efekt hranic se značně liší mezi regiony: je velký pro rozvíjející se země, ale relativně malý pro ekonomiky OECD. Pro tento výpočet jsme posbírali 1271 odhadů efektu hranic publikovaných v 61 studiích, rozčlenili jsme je podle 32 aspektů metodologie a použili bayesovské průměrování modelů k ošetření modelové nejistoty při metaanalýze. Naše výsledky naznačují, že metody výpočtu systematicky ovlivňují publikované efekty hranic. Důležitá je zejména úroveň agregace dat, měření vzdálenosti mezi zeměmi, ošetření multilaterální rezistence a způsob začlenění nebo vyloučení nulových obchodních toků. Nenalézáme žádné známky publikační selektivity.

The Bank Lending Survey captures banks’ opinions regarding the change in the supply of loans by means of credit standards and the terms and conditions for approving loans, and regarding the change in non-financial corporations’ and households’ demand for loans. This document summarises the results of the eleventh round of the survey, i.e. banks’ views on the evolution of the standards and conditions in 2014 Q4 and their expectations in these areas for 2015 Q1. Eighteen banks, accounting for a major share of the bank credit market, took part in the survey, which was conducted between 27 November and 16 December 2014. Šetření úvěrových podmínek bank zachycuje názory bank na změnu nabídky úvěrů prostřednictvím úvěrových standardů a podmínek při schvalování úvěrů a na změnu poptávky po úvěrech u nefinančních podniků a domácností. Tato informace shrnuje výsledky jedenáctého kola šetření, tj. pohled bank na vývoj úvěrových podmínek v průběhu čtvrtého čtvrtletí 2014 a jejich očekávání v uvedených oblastech pro první čtvrtletí 2015. Šetření bylo provedeno v období od 27. listopadu do 16. prosince 2014 a zúčastnilo se ho 18 bank, které mají rozhodující podíl na bankovním úvěrovém trhu.
