Preconditions of the genesis of the Přemyslid realm

In the following study we analyse the validity of the nowgenerally-accepted view of the beginnings of the Přemyslid realm. Those who established this viewpoint emphasisethe income from selling slaves (and distance trade in general) as the main source the dynasties in Central Europeused to strengthen their economic power, which, in the next stage, enabled them to build powerful cavalry armiesas their “iron fist”. With these armies they were supposed to have built their “states”. In this article, not only is theautomatism of this mechanism brought into question (the prevalence of the cavalry), but also the idea that a statecan be built with an army. The author, on the one hand, points out the predatory character of such a system, and onthe other hand draws attention to the building of hillforts as a mechanism that not only enhanced the protection ofa given area, but also, due to the need for construction and repairs, brought large groups of people together, and thusformed a common identity for them.

Spony představují skupinu nálezů, které byly v průběhu posledních 25 let často předmětem intenzivního zájmu detektorové prospekce. V České republice je v současnosti počet amatérů provozujících tuto aktivitu podstatně větší než profesionálních archeologů. Archeologie jakožto věda nemůže rezignovat na poznatky, které pocházejí z nálezů učiněných detektoráři, bez ohledu na osobní názory. Považujeme proto dokumentaci všech archeologických nálezů v naší zemi za profesní povinnost archeologických institucí, která není zpochybnitelná žádnými smysluplnými argumenty. Naopak, pokud samotní detektoráři či široká veřejnost znemožní archeologům dokumentaci těchto nálezů, způsobují tím postupný proces postupného „oslepnutí“ archeologie. Brooches represent a category of material evidence which in the past 25 years often became object of a very intensive metal detecting. In the Czech Republic, the number of amateurs who presently carry out this activity is much higher than the number of professional archaeologists. Archaeological science cannot omit the knowledge resulting from amateur metal-detecting finds, regardless of our personal opinion in this matter. We regard the documentation of all archaeological finds in our country as a professional duty of archaeological institutions, which is not contradictable by any reasonable arguments. On the contrary, when detectorists themselves or the general public prevent archaeologists from documenting these artefacts and making them accessible for professional study, this process gradually makes archaeology “blind”.
