Influence of Recurrent Overloading on the Integrity of Gas Pipes

During hydrostatic tests of gas pipelines the tested pipeline sections are also subjected to recurrent overloading depending on the type and purpose of the test. Recurrent overloading of older piping in operation, in the walls of which the occurrence of cracks cannot be excluded, may be surrounded by some uncertainties as regards their integrity, which may be damaged. On the basis of experimental results obtained on a gas pipe with artificially generated fatigue cracks the authors analysed (from the position of the latest knowledge of fracture mechanics) the conditions that result in the bursting of the ligament in front of the crack tip during recurrent overloading, and discuss the potential mechanisms of reduced fracture pressure during recurrent overloading. Při realizaci některých tlakových zkoušek plynovodních potrubí jsou zkoušené plynovodní úseky podrobeny i opakovanému přetížení, a to v závislosti na druhu a účelu tlakové zkoušky. Právě opakovaná přetížení starších provozovaných potrubí, v jejichž plášti nelze vyloučit výskyt trhlin, jsou předmětem určitých nejasností, pokud jde o zachování či porušení jejich integrity. Na základě experimentálních výsledků, získaných na plynovodní trubce s uměle vygenerovanými únavovými trhlinami, jsou z pozic soudobé lomové mechaniky analyzovány podmínky, vedoucí k protržení ligamentu před čelem trhliny při opakovaném přetížení a jsou diskutovány možné mechanismy sníženého lomového tlaku při opakování přetížení trubky.

Study of historic mortars - Inspiration for the lime industry?

Study of historic mortars is motivated by the desire of understanding of these materials and also by the contemporary approach towards repair of architectural heritage. Detailed study contributes to new scientific findings for example about durability of materials and their degradation agents. Results of study of historic mortars can be an inspiration for production of modern lime based mortars. The focus on authenticity and understanding of historic materials leads to a reintroduction of production of some binders for repair of historic buildings. The 2nd Historic mortars conference joined with the RILEM TC 203-RHM - Repair mortars for historic masonry -was held in Prague earlier this year. This paper refers about selected contributions of this conference. Studium historických malt je motivováno touhou po poznání těchto materiálů a také současným přístupem k opravám architektonického kulturního dědictví. Detailní studium přispívá i k novým vědeckým poznatkům např. ohledně trvanlivosti materiálů a jejich degradačních činitelů. Výsledky studia historických malt mohou být i inspirací pro výrobu současných malt. Důraz na autentičnost materiálů a opětovné poznání kvalit může vést i k znovuzavedení výroby některých pojiv za účelem oprav historických staveb. V letošním roce se v Praze konala druhá mezinárodní konference o historických maltách HMC2010 ve spojení se závěrečným workshopem technického výboru organizace RILEM TC 203-RHM -Repair Mortars for historic masonry. Tento článek referuje o vybraných příspěvcích z této konference a závěrečného workshopu.

Auto-parametric vibrations of simple systems related with inverse pendulum

The aim of this study is to point out one special class of auto-parametric systems related with basic properties of the inverse pendulum. Sensitivity of these systems after the dynamic stability loss is significantly higher than the others as their effective stiffness has rather a softening character. Cílem studie je upozornit na speciální třídu auto-parametrických systémů, které mají podobný charakter dynamického chování jako inversní kyvadlo. Citlivost těchto systémů po ztrátě dynamické stability je mnohem větší než v jiných případech neboť jejich efektivní tuhost má měknoucí charakter.

Glass tessera from st. George´s convent at Prague castle

Our work concerns glass tessera from Virgin Mary/St. Anne chapel in the St. George’s convent on Prague Castle and represents continuation of our work from last years (com. Zeman et al. 2009). This work is focused on one blue tessera in detail. V klášteře sv. Jiří na Pražském hradě byl nalezen soubor 10 mozaikových kostek. Složení kostek bylo dosti neobvyklé na středoevropské poměry. Jednalo se o sodno-olovnaté sklo s příměsí antimonu. Proběhla rozsáhlá rešerše v Brilovy a Bezborodově databázi. Mezi cca 7000 analýzami se našlo pouze 15 podobných. Na základě výskytu fluoru v našem materiálu připouštíme možnost že tesery pocházejí z nepříliš vzdáleného století. Výzkum pokračuje.

The main objective of the project is to study the whole -fatigue life- of the test girder, from the initiation of the first fatigue crack to the complete fatigue failure of the whole girder. In so doing, the growth of all fatigue cracks generated in the breathing web is measured and their impact on the girder collapse mechanism studied. Some characteristic results are presented. Zkoušky modelů ortotropní mostovky při dynamickém zatížení. Sledoval se počet cyklů harmonického napětí a šíření únavových trhlin.

Dynamic stability and post-critical processes of pendulum related auto-parametric systems

The existence and stability of the semi-trivial solution of the auto-parametric system is analyzed. Individual types of post-critical states are discussed (limit cycles, quasi-periodic response types, chaotic processes, transition processes). General considerations are demonstrated on particular DDOF and MDOF cases in both classes mentioned above. Sensitivity of several systems to stability loss with respect to their parameters, excitation amplitudes and other factors are evaluated. Bifurcation mechanism and diagrams are developed and analyzed. Important transition effects together with physical interpretation are investigated. Some open problems and possible future research strategy are outlined. Práce se věnuje studiu dynamické stability a postkritických vlastností nelineárních soustav popisujících kyvadla a podobné systémy. Popisuje různé typy odezvy v okolí rezonance, přechodové jevy a dalsí nelineární efekty.

Samples of two lime-metakaoline plasters applied on historical walls in the Czech Republic a few years ago were investigated and analysed using optical and SE microscopy, EDS, XRD, and mercury porosimetry. Mechanical and other physical characteristics of small samples were also determined. Results and recommendation are presented in the paper. Vzorky dvou vápeno-metakaolinových omítek aplikovaných na historické objekty v ČR před několika lety byly laboratorně vyšetřeny s využitím optické a elektronové mikroskopie,EDS, XRD analýzy a rtuťové porozimetrie. Byly zjištěny také mechanické vlastnosti těchto malt. V příspěvku jsou uvedeny výsledky rozboru malt a doporučení pro zlepšení technologie přípravy těchto malt na stavbě.

Already for twenty years deliberation has been focussed to the improvement and application of the probabilistic method known as SBRA (Simulation Based Reliability Assessment), based on development of the ever-increasing potential of computer technology. At present this progress in computer technology requires the formulation of “rules of the game“ for the SBRA method and guidelines which will serve as a draft for a new class of codes for the design of structures and for assessment of their reliability which will ensure safety, serviceability and durability. In the future, the SBRA method may also serve as a steering component in the so called integrated design. Již dvacet let je obrácena pozornost ke zdokonalení a aplikacím kvalitativně nové metody SBRA založené na stále rostoucím potenciálu výpočetní technologie.

The article presents discussion and recommendation in connection with influence and evaluation methods of bridge loading events. Newly, according to Eurocode 3, two reliability concepts may be considered: damage tolerant concept and safe life concept. Fatigue life assessment may be based on fully probabilistic concept, too. The loading as well as response history should be taken into consideration and a fatigue criterion, based on the stress-range concept, should be applied. Crack grown may be modeled using LEFM procedures, initial crack size ai may be determined as input random variable with log-normal distribution. Příspěvek je zaměřen na diskuse a doporučení týkajících se metod posuzování mostních konstrukcí. V současnosti podle Eurokódu 3 mohou být uvažovány dvě koncepce. Posouzení mostních konstrukcí na únavu může být založeno též na plně pravděpodobnostní metodě, založené na rozkmitu napětí, případně na růstu trhlin modelovaných podle LEFM přičemž počáteční trhlina může být určena jako vstupní náhodná veličina s LOK-normálním rozdělením.
