Constraints as an organizing principle of perception

Human visual perception is far from being an exact copy of reality. For the observer, it is much more important to dispose of relevant and immediately usable information. In fact, the accuracy allowing the safe interactions through the environment is sufficient. The perception always mirrors the life style, i.e., it is optimalized for managing the requirements of everyday situations. These requirements have gradually modified the human visual system in the course of evolution and also led to the forming of internal constraints (presuppositions). Lidské vnímání má omezenou přesnost, není věrným obrazem skutečnosti. Takové ovšem ani není jeho hlavní poslání. Tím je mnohem spíše poskytnutí relevantních, použitelných informací v co nejkratším čase a přesnost postačující k bezpečné interakci v prostředí. Podoba vjemu odráží u člověka – ostatně stejně jako u jiných živočichů – zvláštnosti stylu života, je optimalizovaná na požadavky situací, se kterými se dostáváme do každodenního kontaktu. Tomu je uzpůsobená stavba a činnost smyslového ústrojí a tomu odpovídá i množství zvnitřněných předpokladů (přednastavení, schémat), s nimiž přistupujeme k poznávání okolního světa. Tyto předpoklady se týkají obecných i specifických vlastností prostředí a jsou naším průvodcem a rádcem v procesu percepční interpretace, byť si jejich intervenci neuvědomujeme.

Issues in the research of visual space perception: The geometry of visual space, relationship between the spatial descriptors, and the metric vs. ordinal data

In the article, the authors summarize the main results of their research activity in the field of visual space perception. In the particular experimental projects, they focused on the relationship between the partial spatial descriptors in the process of forming the complex three-dimensional percept. Also, the geometry of the optical space was dealt in with respect to the Euclidean geometry of the physical space. The principle finding concerns the notion of anisotropic curvature of visual space. Finally, the question of plausibility of experiments requiring the perceptual judgements as expressed in metrical units (Euclidean tasks) was raised. The reason for this approach being used is to gather data directly comparable with the physical properties of space. On the other hand, in Euclidean tasks, the ecological validity of knowledge gained is inevitably limited and the danger of intrusion of nonperceptual factors is pervasive. Příspěvek shrnuje hlavní výsledky pětiletého výzkumného snažení autorů. Jedna linie výzkumu byla zaměřená na vzájemný vztah dílčích deskriptorů definujících prostor při formování komplexního trojrozměrného vjemu; experimentálně byla testovaná součinnost velikosti a orientace podnětu při jeho percepčním zpracování. Další skupina výzkumů se věnovala srovnání geometrie vizuálního a fyzikálního prostoru, přičemž hlavním zjištěním je postřeh anizotropie zakřivení vnímaného prostoru. Konečně jsme se pokusili poukázat na rizika používání metrických úloh při výzkumu zrakového vnímání prostoru, kdy se po pozorovateli v experimentu požaduje absolutní přesnost (explicitní formát odpovědi). Prvním z řady argumentů proti takovému zadání je jeho odlehlost vzhledem ke všednodenní zkušenosti; přílišná náročnost spolu s interpretací výsledků neuzpůsobenou specifické úloze se pak podepisují na nízké ekologické validitě zjištění.

Technical instruments in psychology in the period of 1870-1900

During the technical revolution, the society focused on the scientific way of gathering information about the world and also on the use of technical instruments for studying scientific phenomenons. Even psychology was influenced by this technical fascination. It used adapted instruments from other scientific disciplines but later also developed its own instruments aimed to measure specific psychological phenomenons. V období vědecko-technické revoluce se zaměřila pozornost společnosti na vědecký způsob získávání informací o světě a také na možnosti využití techniky při studiu konkrétních jevů. Jistá fascinace technikou se projevila i v psychologii, která v době svého osamostatnění ve velké míře používala upravené technické prostředky z jiných vědních oblastí (fyziologie, fyzika, medicína,…), postupně si však vytvářela své vlastní přístroje odpovídající již přesněji povaze konkrétního zkoumaného jevu.

Verbal reports and protocol analysis

The author deals with problems of verbal reports in psychological research. Today, the concurrent and retrospective verbal reports are considered to be the main source of data about cognitive processes of subject. They became the standard research method also in many fields of applied psychology. Thinking aloud is distinguished from verbal explanation of particular steps of problem solving. Effects of verbalization, problem of completeness of verbal reports, inferences from verbal data, Ericsson's and Simon's model of verbalization, methods and techniques of protocol analysis are dealt with. Verbal reports are rich source of data that can be combined effectively with other data and can be of great value for acquiring knowledge about more than cognitive processes and structures. Practical recommendations for gaining different types of verbal reports under standard conditions are presented that can be analysed by the means of protocol analysis. Autor se zabývá problematikou slovních výpovědí v psychologickém výzkumu, které jsou dnes již považovány za hlavní zdroj dat o kognitivních procesech subjektu. Staly se standardní výzkumnou metodou i v mnoha aplikačních oblastech psychologie. Autor rozlišuje mezi myšlením nahlas a verbálním vysvětlením jednotlivých kroků řešení problému. Zabývá se efekty verbalizace, problémem úplnosti výpovědí, závěry vyvozovanými z verbálních dat, Ericssonovým a Simonovým modelem verbalizace, metodami a technikami protokolové analýzy. Slovní výpovědi jsou bohatým zdrojem dat, efektivně kombinovatelné s jinými daty, a mohou mít velkou hodnotu při vytváření integrované a úplné představy nejen o kognitivních procesech a strukturách. Jsou uvedena praktická doporučení pro získávání různých typů slovních výpovědí za standardních podmínek, které mohou být podrobeny protokolové analýze s cílem přispět k rozvoji psychologického poznání myšlenkových procesů.

Visual space perception: Introduction

The topic visual space perception is widely investigated for a long time. During the history, it was of the principle interest for philosophy, visual arts, geometry, optics, physiology and other disciplines. Also, in the times beginning of psychology as a science, the research was often concerned with the questions related to depth perception. In this paper, we introduce the principle questions studied in the field together with the experimental methods used and characteristic results. Finally, we present our own research focused on trade-off between particular spatial descriptors and on selected aspects of the relationship between visual and physical space. Tématika vnímání prostoru je pravděpodobně nejdůkladněji prostudovanou oblastí zrakového vnímání. V průběhu historie se opakovaně ocitala v centru zájmu malířství, filozofie, geometrie, astronomie, fyziologie a stála i u zrodu psychologie jako samostatné vědecké disciplíny. V příspěvku se pokusíme posluchače ve zkratce seznámit s hlavními okruhy problémů, které jsou studovány, používanými metodami výzkumu a některými výsledky, které vypovídají o charakteristických zkresleních člověka při percepčním zachycení prostorových konfigurací. Zmíníme se rovněž o vlastních výzkumech, které byly zaměřeny na hledání vztahu mezi jednotlivými deskriptory vizuálního/optického prostoru (velikost, vzdálenost, umístění, orientace) a na pokus o kvantifikaci parametrů optického prostoru ve vztahu k prostoru fyzikálnímu/reálnému.

Some problems of pedagogical workers in kindergartens in relation to the multicultural education

The goal of the study was to identify basic problems of relationship between kindergarten teachers and gypsy children and their parents and also to describe problems of gypsy parents. Although gypsy community is specific, it is possible to create a program to support preschool education with using of field social workers and pedagogical assistants. It appears important to support multicultural environment in kindergartens. Cílem výzkumu bylo identifikovat základní problémy týkající se vztahu učitelek v mateřských školách k romským dětem a rodičům a popsat problémy romských rodičů dětí předškolního věku. Přestože romská komunita vykazuje určitá specifika, je možné sestavit program na podporu předškolního vzdělání s využitím terénních sociálních pracovníků a pedagogických asistentů. Je důležité podporovat multikulturnost prostředí v mateřských školách.

Visual space perception is thoroughly examined topic. The relevant questions attracted the natural philosophers since the antiquity. In the article, we introduce in short the main problems empirically studied, the methods used and some of the principal results. Also our own experimental research is dealt with in detail. Tématika vnímání prostoru je pravděpodobně nejdůkladněji prostudovanou oblastí zrakového vnímání.V průběhu historie seopakovaně ocitla v centru zájmu malířství, filozofie, geometrie, astronomie, fyziologie a stála i u zrodu psychologie jako samostatnévědecké disciplíny. V příspěvku se pokusíme posluchače ve zkratce seznámit s hlavními okruhy problémů, které jsou studovány, používanými metodami výzkumu a nekterými výsledky, které vypovídají o charakteristických zkresleních člověka při percepčním zachycení prostorových konfigurací.

Personality of women and personality of men in the light of the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R)

Gender differences in five personality traits have been documented across many cultures. Results showed that women reported themselves to be higher in Neuroticism, Agreeableness, Warmth, and Openness to Feelings, whereas men were higher in Assertiveness and Openness to Ideas. In the contribution data from self-reports 430 men and 526 women on the Czech version of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) are presented. Gender differences previously found across cultures were replicated. Possible explanations for this finding are discussed, including biological theories, social role model and evolutionary psychology. Rodové odlišnosti pěti obecných charakteristik osobnosti byly zaznamenány u respondentů pocházejících z různých kultur. Výsledky ukazují, že ženy se posuzují jako více neurotické, přívětivé a otevřené prožívání, kdežto muži udávají vyšší míru asertivity a otevřenosti idejím. V příspěvku jsou prezentovány údaje o sebeposouzení 430 mužů a 526 žen podle české verze NEO osobnostního inventáře (NEO-PI-R). Potvrdily se totožné rodové odlišnosti, které byly zaznamenány u respondentů napříč různými kulturami. Na závěr uvádíme, jak lze zjištěné rodové odlišnosti objasnit (biologické teorie, model sociálních rolí, evoluční psychologie).

Narrative Memory

The paper is focused on relations between an autobiographical memory and a narrative self. The author explains how narrative reasoning configures and refigures our incoherent experience, how it constructs language and order of the story, how this kind of reasoning helps to create meaning of the life-story events. He tentatatively conceptualizes a narrative memory and narrative memories which form and content enables this memories to be retrieved as a story or its sequences. The story-telling is conceived as an act of imagination, which is necessarily involved in the process of personal identity construction. Autobiographical and narrative memory is precondition of this process. The study is also an attempt to differ narrative and autobiographical memory. Autor se v příspěvku věnuje vztahu mezi autobiografickou pamětí a narativním já. Dovozuje, jak narativní myšlení konfiguruje a refiguruje naši inkoherentní zkušenost, přináší jazyk a řád příběhu, napomáhá tvorbě významu událostí životního příběhu. Navrhuje koncept narativní paměti, v níž uchovávané vzpomínky mají takovou podobu, aby mohly být vybaveny jako příběh nebo jeho sekvence. Vyprávění je v této perspektivě chápáno jako akt imaginace, který je nezbytně přítomný v procesu neustálého hledání vlastní identity. Autobiografická a narativní paměť jsou podmínkou tohoto procesu. Studie je též pokusem o odlišení narativní a autobiografické paměti.

CSR personality types – inspired by ecology

The article introduces a novel personality typology inspired by the classification of plant strategies by Grime. It describes the original C-S-R typology and derives a similar classification of humans. The psychological analogy of C-S-R typology is based on differences in motivation, goal-selection, aspiration and persistance. The analogy enables generalization on other systems with significant competition factor e.g. in sociology or economy. Příspěvek seznamuje s novou typologií osobnosti inspirovanou klasifikací ekologických strategií rostlin podle Grimeho. Popisuje původní CSR typologii a odvozuje analogickou typologii pro chování lidí. Psychologická analogie CSR typologie je založena na motivaci, rozdílech ve volbě cílů, ambicích a vytrvalosti. Umožňuje zobecnění i pro další systémy s výraznými prvky konkurence např. v sociologii či ekonomii.
