On the semantic shift 'blow' – 'needless or frivolous talk'
Nejedlý, Petr; Vajdlová, Miloslava
2015 - English
There is a marginal part of (Old) Czech lexis, the root *klas- family (cf. klás /n/ 'ludibrium; iocus'), so far unrecorded in Czech etymological lexicons. The article considers various Slavic as well as non-Slavic possibilities of the family’s origin and outlines formal and content contexts of this onomatopoeically motivated family on the background of some Old Church Slavic lexical units and on the basis of the principle of elementary relationship. Keywords: etymology; Old Czech; semantic development; semantic shift Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Pacina, J.; Chodějovská, Eva; Popelka, J.
2014 - English
The First Military Survey is a unique collection of maps and descriptive information covering the whole former Austrian monarchy dating back to 1760s-1780s. The First Military Survey contains of both cartographic and textual material. The description of landscape according to the individual sections of the 1:28 800 map was carried out simultaneously with the map. The texts in every section are strictly structured into description of municipalities, “Extract” where the entire region is summarized by subjects and index of places. The aim of this project is to turn this comprehensive cartographic work into a digital library offering the user all the information contained in the original work in a comfort internet environment. The old maps are carefully georeferenced into a seamless map and the descriptive information is processed into a database. The resulting information system will be available in Czech and German as all the texts are being carefully translated. Keywords: First Military Survey; Bohemia, XVIII century; cartography; scientific edition; information system Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Loanwords and Foreign Proper Names in Czech: a Phonologist’s View
Duběda, T.; Havlík, Martin; Jílková, Lucie; Štěpánová, Veronika
2014 - English
The objective of the present paper is to analyze phonological aspects of orthographically non-adapted loanwords and foreign proper names on a non-normative basis. A system of eight adaptation principles is put forward (1. phonological approximation; 2. spelling pronunciation; 3. original pronunciation; 4. analogy with the donor language; 5. analogy with the recipient language; 6. the influence of a third language; 7. the influence of universals; 8. unclearly motivated pronunciation). This system is then applied to a sample of Anglicisms taken from a recently published dictionary. We show that the most important principles are phonological approximation and, to a lesser degree, spelling pronunciation. The “secondary” principles (4–8) affect only a small number of items. Differences between British and American pronunciation are unproblematic for the system. Keywords: phonology; pronunciation; loanwords; proper names; Czech Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Camps and waters: Malý Medvědí Tábor as part of a North Bohemian Mesolithic landscape
Svoboda, Jiří; Novák, J.; Novák, Martin; Pokorný, P.; Sázelová, Sandra
2014 - English
The paper introduces a newly discovered Mesolithic rock shelter Malý medvědí tabor, located in the canyon of the Svitávka River. The excavation revealed intact Mesolithic layers, rich in charcoals and a hearth feature outlined by sandstone blocks. Analyses of the environmental data, fauna, and lithic artefacts are included. In sum, the occupation of the rock shelter was rather episodic, nevertheless the site is of domestic character, as suggested by the richness and character of artefacts. The surrounding vegetation can be reconstructed as a sparse pine forests with common spread of hazel, oak and early successional vegetation with aspen and birch. Given a presence of a nearby peat-bog at Velenice, this new site serves as an important reference point for prehistoric human presence in the Svitavka river valley. Keywords: Mesolithic; Northern Bohemia; rock shelter Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Barbierik, Kamil; Děngeová, Zuzana; Jarý, Vladimír; Liška, Tomáš; Lišková, Michaela; Virius, Miroslav
2014 - English
This paper focuses on a dictionary writing system called Alexis that is currently under development at the Institute of the Czech language of the Czech Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic as part of a preparation of a new monolingual dictionary of the contemporary Czech language. At first, we explain motivation for development of a brand new DWS. We also discuss selected software technologies used for development of the DWS. Then we briefly describe structure of the system that consists of several modules that model key features of the dictionary such as lemma or list of entries. Special emphasis is put on output and editorial modules: we explain the relation between those modules, we demonstrate the process of correction of lemma and roles involved in the process. Finally, we present current status of development and planned new modules which include web interface or revision module. Keywords: dictionary writing system; editorial tool; web application Available at various institutes of the ASCR

The absent description: compensating for its evocative and identifying function
Hoffmannová, Jana
2014 - English
A specific kind of descriptions may be observed in everyday spoken conversations: an explicit description based on full-meaning expressions is missing, while being replaced by other means of reference such as indefinite pronouns or quasi-referring means. This indefiniteness is also made possible due to the use of gestures and moves. Nevertheless, it is the shared experience and communicational strategies of the participants that make it possible for the description to fulfill its function. Keywords: description; everyday spoken communication; face-to-face dialogues; indefinite and quasi-demonstrative pronouns; shared knowledge Available at various institutes of the ASCR
