The Philosophy of Purposeless Time
Hauser, Michael
2014 - English
The article addresses the issue of leisure in the sense of ancient schole. It strives to uncover the relationship between Aristotelian concept of theoretical activity and schole as vacuity. It shows a paradoxical character of schole as purposeless time that forms condition for a meaningful activity. How, then, to restore schole as vacuity today, when colonization of time expands? Keywords: Time; leisure; schole; Platon; Aristotle; Marcuse; neoliberalism Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Dolní Věstonice II: a complex of sites with different chrono-cultural occupations. Preliminary results of the study of lithic assemblages
Polanská, M.; Novák, Martin
2014 - English
The scope of our study is directed to evaluation of each lithic assemblage from Dolní Věstonice II site and to characterize the technical systems of their production in order to understand the fine chrono-cultural seriation. The complex of sites at Dolní Věstonice II, dated to 30-23 ky uncal BP, includes the assemblages represented by clearly defined samples and another assemblages where the cultural attribution is still questionable. If some occupations certainly belong to the Pavlovian, others may be attributed as Gravettian, or even Upper Gravettian. Changes are visible in the procurement of raw material, and in technical systems of production and typological features. Keywords: Gravettian; Dolní Věstonice; lithic industries; chrono-cultural seriation Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Model of Carrying Capacity - System Dynamics in NetLogo and Stella
Olševičová, K.; Cimler, R.; Tomášková, H.; Danielisová, Alžběta
2014 - English
We compare implementations of system dynamics of Celtic settlement using two tools - NetLogo and Stella. The objective of the model is to catch the relations among the population growth, the production growth and the land use with respect to agricultural strategies. Our main objective is to better understand the Celtic society and economy and its sudden collapse. More broadly we are interested in the applicability of multi-method simulation (agent-based approach enhanced with system dynamics and process modelling) in archaeological research. Keywords: Carrying capacity model; NetLogo; social simulation; Stella; system dynamics Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Experientiality: does it divide or link description and narration?
Jedličková, Alice
2014 - English
The paper revisits the – in the scholarly discourse for various reasons time and again rejected – differentiation between description and narration arguing in its favour, hoping to illuminate its usefulness in the analyses of both literary narratives and those produced by other media, as well as to pave the way for papers focusing on ekphrasis and its aspects such as temporality, perspectivization and intermedia functions. Keywords: description; narration; experientiality; intermediality Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Popis a jeho subjekt: očima pozorovatele
Fedrová, Stanislava
2014 - English
The category of beholder as key mediator of the surrounding world (or its image) in an artwork results from confrontation of verbal and visual descriptivity. The paper focuses on the role of beholder and the influence of processes of her perception on the descriptive structure. It seems inevitable to inquire into the ways and devices of transforming the perspective of a character into narratorial discourse or into that of an implied beholder. Concurrently, it is necessary to differentiate between the mode of beholder where emphasize is on perception, and the mode of interpreter, i. e. such apprehension of the world, which employs e. g. pictorial models and cultural/visual concepts intently in order to induce evocation or visualization in readers. The paper examines the assumed “objectivity” or noninterpretative character of description by displaying a variety of observer’s perspectives in description and also in ekphrasis as a specific type of description. Kategorie pozorovatele jakožto klíčového zprostředkovatele vnějšího světa (či obrazu vnějšího světa) vyvstává z konfrontace verbální a vizuální deskriptivity. Studie zkoumá tradičně chápanou "objektivitu" neinterpretující postavy a představuje škálu pozorovatelských perspektiv v popisu a rovněž v ekfrázi jako specifickém popisném typu. Applying System Dynamics and Agent-based Modelling in Archaeological Simulation
Olševičová, K.; Danielisová, Alžběta
2014 - English
We apply the social simulation to the cultural milieu of the late Iron Age in Central Europe and its economic strategies, especially on the subsistence and the carrying capacity of the settlement agglomeration in relation to the daily economic needs of its inhabitants. By means of the computational models of the economics of the particular central settlement (Staré Hradisko oppidum) and its hinterland we aim to verify hypotheses about the economic sustainability in case self-supplying is applied. To achieve this, the agent-based modelling, cellular automata approach and system dynamics modelling are used. In the paper we present four alternative scenarios of population dynamics (baseline and three versions of depopulation) and four alternative scenarios of food production and agricultural practices (baseline and three types of external events). The set of models for all scenarios was implemented in NetLogo and Stella. Outputs of the models are subject of interests of archaeologists and according to their feedback the models will be refined and extended. Keywords: agent-based model; cellular automata; land use model; NetLogo; sustainability; system dynamics Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Detecting the children zone at the abandoned Nenets campsites: An ethnoarchaeological example from the Polar Ural Mts., Russia
Sázelová, Sandra; Svoboda, Jiří; Novák, Martin
2014 - English
The paper presents an ethnoarcheological approach to questions arising from archaeological studies of Upper Paleolithic settlements in Europe concerning the role of children and their activities in site formation processes. Within surveyed micro-region at Yangana Pe, they were recorded and documented several Nenets abandoned campsites with traces of childreln's play. During the play, Nenets children create specific patterns, usually detectable within the domestic and activity zones of abandoned campsites. In order to interpret them in context, supplementary ethnoarcheological evidence should be incorporated and evaluated. Keywords: Nenets; ethnoarchaeology; Siberia Available at various institutes of the ASCR
