Haematological response of common carp \kur{Cyprinus carpio} to experimental infection with blood stages of the myxozoan parasite \kur{Sphaerospora molnari}
TOMANOVÁ, Anna
2018 - English
Sphaerospora molnari is a histozoic endoparasite causing severe inflammation during sporeformation in the gills of common carp. As for other myxozoans, little is known about the host response to early proliferation and multiplication of this parasite in the fish host. This thesis is focused on a controlled infection experiment using S. molnari blood stages and on determining cellular and haematological changes of common carp as a response to infection, over a 9-week period post intraperitoneal injection. The results show a noticeable increase in cellular components of innate immunity 14 dpi and a massive increase in lymphocyte numbers, likely B cells, 21-28 dpi. The data are discussed in relation to parasite infection intensity in various tissues and organs, and they strongly point to the acquisition of specific immunity of common carp to S. molnari resulting in a controlled, low level infection from 49 dpi onwards. James Joyce and the science of mind - the approach of Cognitive Narratology to Dubliners
ZELENÁ, Lenka
2018 - English
This bachelor's thesis deals with the work of the Irish writer, James Joyce, called Dubliners and its relation to a modern scientific discipline Cognitive narratology. Its aim is to analyse and interpret chosen short stories in terms of the aforementioned discipline. The first part of the thesis introduces the reader to the life of James Joyce and ho his work. Then, the aspects of Cognitive narratology are defined, as they serve as a basic tool for the analysis and most importantly, for the interpretation. The second part deals with the narrative structure in the chosen stories ('The Sisters', 'Araby', 'Eveline', 'After the Race', 'A Little Cloud', 'A Painful Case', 'Grace', 'The Dead'). Apart from analysing the stories in terms of time, setting, point of view and other aspects, the study focuses on the relationships between the author, the characters, and the reader. Finally, there is a summary of the work with the methodology. Druhá část pak přináší samotné pojednání o struktuře narativu ve vybraných povídkách ("The Sisters", "Araby", "Eveline", "After the Race", "A Little Cloud", "A Painful Case", "Grace", "The Dead"). Mimo analýzy povídek z hlediska času, prostředí, úhlu pohledu a dalších aspektů, se práce věnuje především vztahem mezi autorem, postavami, a čtenářem. Závěrem je shrnuta práce s metodologií. Keywords: James Joyce; Dubliňané; modernismus; Kognitivní naratologie; paralýza; interakce; narativ Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

A Phenomenon of Sherlock Holmes: A Detailed Comparison of Selected Sherlock Holmes Stories By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle And The Sherlock Tv Series By BBC
KUBECOVÁ, Kristina
2022 - English
This bachelor's thesis offers a detailed comparison of three selected Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with the BBC adaptation of Sherlock broadcast during the years 2010-2017. The series adaptation is inspired by the books from the 19th century, but they differ in many ways, as the storyline diverges completely from the original stories in many parts. However, the biggest difference between the two adaptations is the time period in which the story is set. The original stories take place in the period from the second half of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century, while the series adaptation is set in the modern times of the 21st century. The episode "A Study in Pink" is compared to A Study in Scarlet, "A Scandal in Belgravia" to the short story "A Scandal in Bohemia," and "The Six Thatchers" to the short story "The Adventure of Six Napoleons." Keywords: Sherlock Holmes; adaptace; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; porovnání; moderní adaptace; Viktoriánská doba Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Neurální habituace statických reklam v homo- a heterogenním video-prostředí.
VOLCHKOV, Ivan
2022 - English
This bachelor thesis focuses on theoretical elaboration and empirical research of the topic of habituation and perception of static advertisements in the cyberspace during video perception. The theoretical part contains a summary of the theory and research of habituation, perception of advertisements, and visual perception, as well as the theoretical basis of electroencephalography. The empirical part describes the intention, design, implementation, results of the research and their discussion. The between-subject experimental design is constructed to mimic real cyberspace, where advertisements become noise and distractions to the Internet users. The study aims to measure the brain's habituation response to repeated advertisement presentation while viewing educational videos based on following biophysical signals (using electroencephalography), i.e., to determine how the brain learns to get used to or respond to advertising stimuli during educational video streaming and whether there is a difference in brain reaction to homo- and heterogeneous advertising stimuli. A new experimental paradigm was created for this research. 18 participants took part in the research, randomly divided into three groups: two experimental groups and one control group. 15 participants' data proceeded to the final analysis, due to technical deficiencies of signal processing. The analysis was performed using the following EEG methods: Event-Related Potentials, Event-Related Spectral Perturbation, and Power Spectral Analysis. The results indicate that homogeneous advertisements are less disruptive to the fluency of perception of the video viewer than heterogeneous ones, but may require more prominent differentiation. Keywords: Habituace; percepce reklam; vizuální percepce; homogeneita reklam; kongruence reklam; EEG; ERP; ERSP; PSA Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Short Stories of the American Civil War/Povídky o americké občanské válce
MAŠKOVÁ, Tereza
2022 - English
This bachelor thesis will explore through literary fiction (specifically the genre of the short story) the history of the Civil War in the United States (1861-1865). The majority of the authors come from the north, and in the case of Ambrose Bierce, one served with distinction in combat for the Union forces. Both the experience of soldiers as well as the effect on the country (wives and children of soldiers, the slaves in the south, the civilian population etc.) will be examined and analyzed. The introduction will include an overview of the Civil War itself, with particular emphasis on the historical events depicted in the fiction under analysis. Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Multispecies analysis of the role of epigenetic factors in aging
MÜLLER, Miriam
2022 - English
The following thesis provides the results of a multispecies analysis that was done to identify expression patterns of 209 genes encoding epigenetic factors that are associated with aging and longevity. The first part of the analysis investigated changes in the gene expression with aging for the long-lived species human and naked mole rat and the short-lived species mouse and rat. The second part aimed to further analyse the baseline expression levels of these genes in the long-lived species bowhead whale, human, blind mole rat and naked mole rat when compared to the short-lived species rat, mouse, marmoset and guinea pig. To achieve this, a number of Python scripts were developed, investigating the expression of epigenetic factors that potentially contribute to longevity.
