Czech and German equivalents in the translations of the English novel Lolita by V. Nabokov (with the main focus on compounds)

This diploma thesis deals with the problem of translating English compounds into the Czech language which is typologically different. The compounds we have analyzed are moreover often neologisms. This makes the problem of translating even more difficult since for such appellations a lexicon entry has not yet been created. We have therefore examined various translation solutions where the main focus was laid on the ways that are used in the synthetic Czech language for the expression of the semantically rich information contained in the compact analytical English compound. Another contribution of this thesis covers the description of the most important processes and types of the English word-formation from the point of view of different linguists. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problémem překládání anglických složenin do češtiny, která je na rozdíl od analytické angličtiny typologicky odlišným, syntetickým flektivním jazykem. Složeniny, na které jsme se v této práci zaměřili, jsou mnohdy navíc neologismy, čímž je práce překladatele ještě více ztížena, neboť pro takováto pojmenování ještě neexistuje odpovídající ekvivalent v cílovém jazyce. Zkoumali jsme proto různá překladatelská řešení, kde nás především zajímalo, jakých jazykových prostředků bude využívat syntetická čeština pro vyjádření sémanticky hutné informace obsažené v kompaktním analytickém anglickém tvaru. Další přínos této práce spočívá v tom, že popisuje nejdůležitější procesy a typy anglického slovotvoření z hledisek různých lingvistů.

The thesis assignes to the problems in the area of health politics, organization of hospitals and specifies Teaching hospital in Motol. To more detail it is then focused on children patients in hospitals and describes concurrent trends in the development of care of patients and in particular children patients in hospital and after release from hospital. Furthermore the thesis insists on the characteristic of schools attached to hospitals, on integration of children with hard-hit handicapped and specific institution and education of selected groups with cystic fibrosis, epilepsy and children with tracheostomy and to false lung ventilation handicap Diplomová práce uvádí do problematiky v oblasti zdravotní politiky, organizace nemocnic a specifikuje Fakultní nemocnici v Motole. Podrobněji se pak zabývá pobytem dětského pacienta v nemocnici a popisuje současné trendy ve vývoji péče o pacienta, zvláště dětského v nemocnici a po propuštění z nemocnice. Diplomová práce v další části klade důraz na charakteristiku školy při nemocnici, na integraci dítěte s těžkým zdravotním postižením a na specifiku výchovy a vzdělávání vybraných skupin dětí s těžkým zdravotním postižením jako je cystická fibróza, epilepsie a dítě s tracheostomií nebo na umělé plicní ventilaci. V práci nalezneme empirickou sondu dvě případové studie, které dokumentují stav integrace dětí s tracheostomií a na umělé plicní ventilaci.

Over the past few years there has been a lack of empirical evidence on menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and the introduction of MHM Toolkits in schools to improve the health, environment, and education challenges of adolescent girls in Zambia. To explore the extent to which the introduction of reusable sanitary materials has addressed knowledge gaps, hygiene, mental, social and physical health as well as the education outcomes for adolescent girls in Eastern province, Zambia, a study in the context of two complimentary programs introduced in schools located in Chipata (Eastern province) that sought to address the challenges related to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), health, education and environmental management was conducted. The research also pursued to uncover the health implications, gaps and challenges adolescent girls were facing with the introduction and use of reusable pads. V uplynulých letech existovala nedostatek empirických důkazů o řízení menstruační hygieny (MHM) a zavedení nástrojů MHM Toolkits ve školách s cílem zlepšit zdravotní problémy, problémy životního prostředí a vzdělávání dospívajících dívek v Zambii. Prozkoumat, do jaké míry zavedení opakovaně použitelných sanitárních materiálů řešilo mezery ve znalostech, hygieně, duševní, sociální a fyzické zdraví a výsledky vzdělávání dospívajících dívek ve východní provincii Zambie, studie v rámci dvou doplňkových programů zavedených ve školách v provincii Chipata (východní provincie), které usilovaly o řešení problémů souvisejících s vodou, hygienou a hygienou (WASH), ve zdravotnictví, vzdělávání a ekologickém řízení. Výzkum také sledoval odhalení zdravotních důsledků, mezer a výzev, kterým dospívající dívky čelily zavedením a použitím opakovaně použitelných podložky.

The primary objective of this thesis is to study the self definition of people in the context of migration. It tests the discourse of Ukraine?s belonging to the broader European culture and democratic tradition, which has become one of the core claims of the Ukrainian national(ist) ideology, popularized in the public discussions over the past two decades. Taking as an example the Ukrainian applicants for Shengen visa in Kyiv and migrant communities in Olomouc (Czech Republic) and Budapest (Hungary), it explores how this discourse develops in the context of migration, before the travelers cross the border and when they become ?insiders? as migrants in the host community. It suggests that such an experience leads to changing understanding of what it means to be European and a revision of one?s own distinct cultural values and history and their place on the geopolitical map of the world. The rate of Poverty in Palestine has been increasing (25.8% on 2011) and the rate of investment has been declining. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the chances of both "Waqf" and "Zakat" as sources of Funds and Investment and as tool to tackle poverty in Palestine by demonstrating good practices and experience. The thesis also focuses on the impediments and challenges of collecting "Zakat", and the misuse of it by those who are employed to collect the funds. With each century that comes, there are always challenges that shake humanity to the core. The 21st century is no exception. With endless wars, dwindling natural resources, natural disasters and poverty among others, this century has a lot to deal with. Above all, our home Mother Earth continues to be threatened by environmental degradation and the changing climate. Human activity is regarded as the driving force behind the rising temperatures and environmental deterioration. There is a need to protect the only home we know. While there are environmental lobby groups, non-governmental organisations and even state institutions that are committed to protecting Mother Earth, the poor and marginalised groups are often left out. THE POTENTIAL OF TEACHING AND LEARNING ENGLISH OUTDOORS

This diploma thesis deals with the potential of teaching and learning English outdoors. The theoretical part covers the concept of outdoor education with emphasis and respect to nature, where the Scandinavian frilufstliv philosophy was introduced. The practical part charts the present perspective and experiences of English teachers and students from the Faculty of Education on the potential of teaching and learning English outdoors. The research investigates this phenomenon from four perspectives, thus from the perspective of English teachers from chosen alternative schools, the perspective of teachers from classical schools, and the perspective of students from the Faculty of Education. The results show that, albeit different experiences and opinions on this phenomenon, the majority of respondents are interested in gaining more information about this phenomenon ie 'teaching English outdoors.' Práce se zabývá potenciálem výuky anglického jazyka v přírodě. Teoretická část definuje pojem 'outdoor education' (vzdělávání v přírodě) s ohledem na respekt a úctu k přírodě. Výchozí filosofie pro teoretickou část je skandinávský 'frilufstliv.' Praktická část mapuje současné zkušenosti a názory učitelů a studentů Angličtiny na výuku anglického jazyka v přírodě. Výzkum dále zjišťuje, zda se pohled na danou problematiku liší z hlediska postojů učitelů vybraných alternativních škol, klasických škol a studentů Angličtiny pedagogických fakult. Výsledky výzkumu prokázaly, že ačkoliv zkušenosti s výukou Angličtiny v přírodě se velmi liší, většina respondentů se o dané téma zajímá a chtějí se k němu dozvědět více informací.

Description: The main objective of this thesis is the analysis of Jewish characters in English drama of the sixteenth century. This thesis illustrated that the conflict among Jews was based not only on the clash between the old and young generation, but also on the conflict between the Jewish self-haters who were denied any possible opportunity to self-fashioning because of their sex and race, and those Jews who had power over the weaker members of the Jewish society. Tato práce poukazuje na faktory, které ovlivnily postoje Jessiky (Kupec benátský, William Shakespeare) a Abigail (Maltský žid, Christopher Marlowe) vůči své vlastní rase. Argumentuji zde, že paradoxní fenomén nesnášenlivosti žen vůči vlastní etnické příslušnosti je jednou z charakteristických rysů postav Židů v 16. století. Uvadim, ze židovská sebenesnášenlivost je reakcí těchto fiktivních postav jak na sexuální diskriminaci ze strany křesťanů a také židů, tak na rasovou nesnášenlivost.

Manners of Translation of Czech and Korean Honorifics

This thesis analyzes the translation of politeness levels between Korean and Czech, mainly focusing on the correspondence of Czech honorifics (T-V distinction) with Korean honorifics. It aims to observe how each honorific system interacts in translation in order to improve the understanding of each system and facilitate better communication between Czech and Korean speakers. The theoretical portion introduces each level of politeness in speech of the two languages. The practical portion demonstrates how translation between Czech and Korean honorifics can occur in different situations and in different relationships, such as: family members, superiors and employees, close colleagues, teacher and students, and strangers meeting for the first time. This was done by using two sources: one Korean television series (English: Lovers in Prague) and one Czech movie (English: I Served the King of England). Finally, several key problems in translation regarding honorifics were discussed. Tato diplomová práce analyzuje překlad úrovní zdvořilosti mezi korejštinou a češtinou. Soustředí se zejména na odpovídající česká (rozlišení tykání a vykání) a korejská honorifika. Zaměřuje se na pozorování interakcí systémů zdvořilostí v překladu, aby zlepšila pochopení obou systémů a umožnila snazší komunikaci českých a korejských mluvčích. Teoretická část uvádí jednotlivé úrovně zdvořilosti v obou jazycích. Praktická část demonstruje překlad české a korejské zdvořilosti v různých situacích a rozdílných společenských vztazích, kde aktéry jsou např.: členové rodiny, nadřízení a podřízení, blízcí kolegové, vyučující a studenti, nebo cizí lidé. Toho bylo docíleno s využitím dvou zdrojů: korejského televizního seriálu (česky: Milenci v Praze) a českého filmu (česky: Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále). V závěru jsou rozebrány klíčové problémy překladu honorifik.

The objective of the thesis is to determine the role of volunteer non-governmental organizations in Vietnamese and Indonesian society. The first part of the thesis addresses the theoretical information about volunteerism, civil society and non-governmental organizations both generally and with focus on Vietnam and Indonesia. The second part is practical ?partly quantitative and partly qualitative research based on questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. This research was conducted in the Vietnamese non-governmental organization SJ Vietnam and the Indonesian non-governmental organization IIWC. The questions aim to discover what the position of SJ Vietnam and IIWC are in their society, how they are perceived by local community, what impact their activities have on local communities, why they chose to work with volunteers and what motivates volunteers to join these organizations . The results show that both organizations are strong elements of their society. Both organizations increase the level of education of children in the communities where they work and bring positive thoughts into the children´s daily lives.
