Becoming a teacher - a male perspective

2011 - English This diploma thesis takes a closer look at the aspects that influence the process of becoming a teacher from the perspective of men. The theoretical part focuses first on general factors such as the personality of a teacher and teaching profession. It discusses the importance of a teacher?s personality and its development. Furthermore, it gives a description of the teaching profession, its demands and requirements, and its different phases. Next, it proceeds to a more specific issue which is the position of men in education. Finally, it describes teachers of foreign languages as a specific group of experts. In the practical part five male teachers at different stages of their careers are interviewed. They are asked about specific aspects that influence the process of becoming a teacher. The questions are structured into three parts: becoming a teacher, demands and requirements of the teaching profession, and men in education. At the end of the thesis my own conception of a good teacher is introduced. Diplomová práce se zabývá různými aspekty, které ovlivňují proces stávání se učitelem, a zaujímá při tom pohled muže. Teoretická část se soustředí nejprve na obecné otázky, jako je osobnost učitele a učitelská profese. Hovoří se zde o významu učitelovy osobnosti a jejím vývoji. Dále je zde popsána učitelská profese, její požadavky a nároky a různé fáze učitelské praxe. Následně je pozornost soustředěna na konkrétnější problém, kterým je postavení mužů ve školství. Nakonec jsou zde popisováni učitelé cizích jazyků jako specifická skupina odborníků. V praktické části jsou vedeny rozhovory s pěti učiteli muži v různých fázích praxe. Rozhovory jsou zaměřeny na specifické aspekty, které ovlivňují proces stávání se učitelem. Otázky jsou strukturovány do tří tematických celků: stávání se učitelem, požadavky a nároky učitelské profese a muži ve školství. Na konci této práce je prezentována moje představa dobrého učitele. In this graduation these is described areas, which are very important with selling ariculture technics. I theoretical part I deal with the establishment, termination and securing of obligations and further with purchase contracts, leasing, financing and grantes. After that I continue with practical part, in which I describe selected companies, I compare their purchase contracts and I investigate their accordance to business law. V této práci bych velmi rád poukázal na takové oblasti, které jsou při prodeji zemědělské techniky velmi důležité. V teoretické části se zabývám vznikem, zánikem a zajištěním závazkových vztahů, smlouvami, leasingem, financováním a dotacemi. Poté na tato témata navazuji praktickou částí, kde charakterizuji vybrané společnosti, porovnávám jejich kupní smlouvy mezi sebou a zjišťuji soulad s obchodním zákoníkem. The Work of John Reed, Louise Bryant and Eugene O'Neill in the Context of The Provincetown Players

2023 - English he main aim of this thesis is to present the work of Eugene O'Neill, Louise Bryant and John Reed in the context of the Provincetown Players. The first chapter presents a picture of American society at the turn of the 20th century, shows the state in which culture and, above all theatre could be found, and, considering the previously mentioned, deals with the reason for the creation of one of the most important amateur theatres in America. The second chapter briefly presents the history of the Provincetown Players, their biggest achievements and the most important members. We then conclude the theory with a chapter mapping the life of O'Neill, Bryant and Reed before coming to Provincetown, their later stay in this seaside town, and also their mutual relationship, which affected them both personally and professionally. With this in mind, in the second part of the thesis, we study three selected works by those authors, namely The Game by Louise Bryant, The Eternal Quadrangle by John Reed and finally, Thirst by Eugene O'Neill. In this last chapter, we not only analyze the plot, motives, themes and form of individual plays, but we will also look for the links with the real world and the connection between the trio of those artists. Cílem této diplomové práce je představit práci Eugena O'Neilla, Louise Bryant a Johna Reeda v kontextu jejich působení v divadelním uskupení Provincetown Players. Teoretická část je rozdělena do tří rozsáhlých kapitol, kdy první z nich podává obraz americké společnosti na přelomu 19. a 20. století, ukazuje stav, ve kterém se nacházela kultura a především pak divadlo, a s přihlédnutím na předchozí jmenované se zaobírá důvody vzniku jednoho z nejdůležitějším amatérských divadel v Americe. Druhá kapitola v krátkosti představuje historii Provincetown Players, jejich přelomové počiny a nejvýznamnější členy. Teorii pak zakončujeme kapitolou mapující život O'Neilla, Bryant a Reeda před příchodem do Provincetownu, jejich pozdější pobyt v tomto přímořském městě, a především jejich vzájemný vztah, který je ovlivnil na rovině osobní i pracovní. S tímto vědomím pak v analytické části analyzujeme tři vybraná díla těchto autorů, konkrétně The Game Louisy Bryant, The Eternal Quadrangle Johna Reeda a na závěr Thirst Eugena O'Neilla. V této části se zaměřujeme nejen na obsahovou a formální úpravu her, ale hledáme také návaznosti s reálným světem a spojitosti mezi trojlístkem umělců. Vampirism and Queerness in Nineteenth-Century Literature

2023 - English The aim of this thesis is the analysis of the connection between vampirism and queerness in Bram Stoker's Dracula and Florence Marryat's The Blood of the Vampire. The Master's thesis is divided into three parts. The first part examines the relationship of Victorian England to sexuality and the connection between queerness and the 19th-century Gothic novel. We will pay attention to the different perceptions of male and female homosexuality and the portrayal of the so-called "Others" in contemporary literature. In the second part, we will focus on the interpretation of Dracula in terms of queerness, namely through Count Dracula and the role he plays in the novel, including his relations to the other male characters in the novel. The third part concentrates on the analysis of The Blood of the Vampire, describing the fate of female vampire Harriet Brandt. Finally, the thesis explores the aspects of Harriet's Otherness that Harriet threatens Victorian society with, as well as the ambiguous understanding of this work. Cílem této práce je analýza spojení mezi vampirismem a queer motivy v dílech Drákula od Brama Stokera a Krev upírky od Florence Marryat. Diplomová práce je rozdělena do tří částí. První část se zabývá vztahem viktoriánské Anglie k sexualitě a spojitostí mezi queer motivy a gotickým románem 19. století. Věnujeme se zde rozdílnému vnímání mužské a ženské homosexuality a zobrazování tzv. "Others" v dobové literatuře. Ve druhé části se zaměříme na interpretaci díla Drákula z hlediska queer teorie, a to prostřednictvím hraběte Drákuly a role, kterou v románu představuje, včetně jeho vztahu k ostatním mužským postavám. Třetí část se soustředí na analýzu díla Krev upírky, které popisuje osud ženské upírky Harriet Brandt. Nakonec se práce zabývá aspekty jinakosti, kterými Harriet ohrožuje viktoriánskou společnost, a zároveň dvojznačným chápáním tohoto díla. Traumatic Events: A Linguistic Perspective

2021 - English The goal of the thesis is to examine traumatic events from a linguistic perspective in detail. People who talk about their traumatic experiences use language in a specific way, and others who are a part of the conversation should adapt their expectations accordingly. Therefore, the thesis will mainly focus on what the discourse of traumatic events looks like and how we use narrative and other linguistic phenomena when it comes to this area. This information will be used to describe how we should try to perceive people with traumatic experiences and how to interpret their utterances. Both theoretical and applied linguistics will be used to achieve this goal, as well as interdisciplinary fields such as psycholinguistics. The thesis will then also work with sources from the areas of law and psychology. It will examine court cases connected to witness accounts of traumatic events and also psychological handbooks which deal with this phenomenon. Cílem práce je podrobné prozkoumání traumatických zážitků z lingvistického hlediska. Lidé, kteří hovoří o svých traumatických zkušenostech, užívají jazyk specifickým způsobem a ostatní, kteří se této konverzace účastní, by tomuto měli uzpůsobit svá očekávání. Práce se tedy zejména zaměří na to, jak vypadá diskurz traumatických zážitků a jak je v jeho rámci pracováno s narativem a s dalšími lingvistickými jevy. Tyto informace pomohou popsat, jak by se mělo k jedincům s traumatickými zážitky přistupovat a jak jejich výpovědi interpretovat. Pro dosažení tohoto cíle budou použity poznatky jak z teoretické a aplikované lingvistiky, tak i z interdisciplinárních oborů jako je psycholingvistika. Konkrétně pak bude tato práce čerpat z právních a psychologických zdrojů. Budou zkoumány soudní případy související s výpověďmi obětí traumatických zážitků a zároveň také psychologické příručky, které se danou problematikou zabývají. The Problem of Translation Equivalence: Analysis of the Czech Translation of the Book The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson

2021 - English This M.A. thesis entitled "The Problem of Translation Equivalence: Analysis of the Czech Translation of the Book The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson" aims to apply the translation quality assessment approach on the Czech translation of the thriller The President is Missing which was voted the worst translation of the year 2018 by the Czech Literary Translators' Guild. By employing Baker's (2011) approach towards the translation analysis in combination with the contrastive principles of TQA as presented by Zehnalová et al. (2015), the English source text along with the Czech target text translated by Ondřej Duha was carefully analysed from the point of view of the two-level monolingual-bilingual quality assessment. The translation errors discovered during the analysis were divided into five categories corresponding with the respective levels of language. As a result, this thesis briefly presents five areas of possible translation pitfalls - namely individual lexical units, equivalence above the word level, grammar, means of textual equivalence and pragmatic relations within the text - along with the commonly used translation strategies used for overcoming them. Subsequently, the theoretical framework is complemented by practical examples in the form of data samples extracted from the Czech target text. These examples present instances of an unsuccessful employment of the recommended translation techniques as well as an alternative translation solution taking into consideration the socio-cultural and socio-political relations of the source text. Tato diplomová práce na téma "The Problem of Translation Equivalence: Analysis of the Czech Translation of the Book The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson" si klade za cíl aplikovat teoretické metody hodnocení kvality překladu na český překlad thrilleru Pohřešuje se prezident, který byl Obcí překladatelů zvolen nejhorším překladem roku 2018. Na základě přístupu k translatologické analýze, který ve svém díle představila Bakerová (2011), v kombinaci s kontrastivními principy hodnocení kvality překladu popsanými u Zehnalové et al. (2015), byl anglický zdrojový text společně s českým překladem Ondřeje Duhy podroben detailní analýze z hlediska dvouúrovňové monolingválně-bilingvní metody hodnocení překladu. Zjištěné překladové chyby byly následně rozděleny do pěti kategorií totožných s jednotlivými úrovněmi jazykového systému. Jakožto výsledek tohoto výzkumu tato diplomová práce stručně představuje pět oblastí potenciálně nebezpečných z hlediska překladových chyb. Konkrétně se jedná o oblast lexikální, ekvivalenci na úrovni slovních spojení, gramatický systém, prostředky textové ekvivalence a pragmatické vztahy uvnitř textu. Práce dále nastíní běžně užívané překladatelské strategie používané k dosažení maximální možné míry ekvivalence v těchto oblastech. Teoretický rámec práce je následně doplněn praktickými příklady v podobě vzorků jazykového materiálu vybraných z českého překladu. Tyto příklady poukazují na špatné využití zmíněných překladatelských strategií a nabízejí alternativní řešení zohledňující socio-kulturní a socio-politické poměry zdrojového textu. 2021 - English This diploma thesis is concerned with the differences between male and female speech, their ways of expressing opinions, the level of aggressiveness of their attitudes in relation to others with different opinions. It deals with the language that is to be found specifically on Facebook, in various news-agency posts, as well as presents the current gender-related linguistic research and its discoveries. The empirical part of this thesis includes an analysis of Facebook comments I have carefully selected, which were made by native English speakers, whose names I have altered to preserve their privacy. The primary focus is to point out the means of aggressive language online, while the secondary focus is to analyse the way men and female express their attitudes in relation to various topics. The emphasis is put on connecting the theories of expert linguists and specific examples. The conclusion will be drawn within the limited extent of material that has been gathered. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá rozdíly mezi jazykem mužů a žen, jejich způsoby vyjadřování názorů a úroveň agrese použitého jazyka při střetu s jinými uživateli jiného názoru. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá jazykem, který nacházíme na různých Facebookových stránkách s aktuálními zprávami a zároveň prezentovat současné genderové lingvistické výzkumy a objevy. Empirická část této diplomové práce obsahuje dále analýzu pečlivě vybraných Facebookových komentářů, jež byly vytvořeny rodilými mluvčími z Anglie, a posléze jejich jména byla změněna, aby bylo ochráněno jejich soukromí. Hlavní zaměření této diplomové práce je poukázat na jevy agresivního jazyka na internetu a vedlejší zaměření je analýza způsobu vyjadřování postojů muži a ženami, v návaznosti na různá témata. Důraz je kladen na spojení teorií předních lingvistů a jednotlivých příkladů ze získaného korpusu. Závěr a výsledek bude vycházet z empirické části, v rámci omezeného shromážděného materiálu, z něhož jsem vycházela. Reconstruction of the evolution of multiple sex chromosomes in \kur{Leptidea} wood white butterflies

2020 - English Having a crucial role in many evolutionary processes, such as sex determination, speciation and adaptation, sex chromosomes tend to be highly conserved. Rapidly evolving sex chromosome systems offer a special opportunity to study the evolution of the sex chromosomes in miraculous resolution. Butterflies of genus Leptidea possess a unique species-specific sex chromosome system with 3-4 W and 3-4 Z chromosomes. Using novel genomic tools established for L. juvernica, namely transcriptome-based microarray for comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH) and a library of bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones, we assembled the physical maps of Z chromosomes in three cryptic Leptidea species (L. juvernica, L. sinapis, and L. reali) by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of BAC clones containing orthologs of Bombyx mori genes. In all three species, we identified the 'ancestral' Z chromosome and synteny segments of autosomal origin and reconstructed the step-by-step evolution of multiple sex chromosomes. We propose that the multiple sex chromosome system originated in the common ancestor of Leptidea species by means of multiple chromosomal rearrangements, especially translocations, fusions and fissions, between the sex chromosomes and autosomes. Thus, the turnover of neo-sex chromosomes could not be the main engine driving speciation in this genus. Instead, we propose that subsequent differentiation of the sex chromosome multiples in each species together with enlarged number of Z-linked genes could play a crucial role in accumulation of genetic incompatibilities facilitating subsequent divergence and speciation in Leptidea wood white butterflies.
