How universal are reserve design rules? A test using butterflies and their life history traits
BARTOŇOVÁ, Alena
2017 - English
This thesis uses butterfly species lists for 125 Czech National Nature Reserves and Monuments to test the validity of generally agreed 'reserve design rules' using multivariate ordination analyses. We used analyses of butterfly life history traits to seek for biological mechanisms responsible for butterfly community responses to geometric and heterogeneity characteristics of the reserves. We found that different design characteristics are important for individual species, depending on their life histories. Keywords: motýli; ochrana přírody; rezervace; funkční vlastnosti; heterogenita krajiny Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Legionella Becoming a Mutualist: Adaptive Processes Shaping the Genome of Symbiont in the Louse Polyplax serrata
ŘÍHOVÁ, Jana
2017 - English
Genomic modifications coupled with the first known transition of a Legionella bacterium to symbiosis with insects (louse Polyplax serrata). Apart from characteristics typical for other obligatory symbionts in insect (genome reduction), the main innovation of the genome consists in horizontal acquisition of complete biotin operon. Comparative genomic analysis with free living legionellae and other symbiotic bacteria demonstrates convergent evolution of several phylogenetically unrelated louse symbionts. Keywords: endosymbiont; Legionella polyplacis; Polyplax serrata; horizontal gene transfer; genome evolution; metabolism Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Klíčové faktory složení společenstva sinic dostřikové zóny na dvou chorvatských ostrovech
VONDRÁŠKOVÁ, Alžběta
2018 - English
On two Croatian islands, Veruda and Ugljan, cyanobacterial communities and their composition were surveyed. The cyanobacterial composition in the splash zone was examined in horizontal and vertical directions. Statistical analysis shows the vertical gradient as the strongest one on the contrary the horizontal distribution does not reflect any pronounced differences between the islands. The species diversity and distribution is not dependent on the orientation of the locality toward the cardinal points. The study highlights the importance of high-density sampling in the vertical and also the horizontal direction for covering sufficiently the species richness of the site. Keywords: biofilm; Croatian coast; endolithic; epilithic; marine shore; zonation Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Genetic analysis of dicyemid infrapopulations suggests sexual reproduction and host colonization by multiple individuals is common
FLEGROVÁ, Tereza
2022 - Czech
This study explores the infrapopulation structure of Dicyema moschatum in its host Eledone moschata with the use of microsatellite markers. In order to assess the infrapopulation diversity, set of eight microsatellite markers was selected and respective oligonucleotides were designed for this population genetics study. Fragmentation method was used to analyze various microsatellite markers and the results were analyzed in bioinformatic programs that focus on standard population genetic metrics. Obtained results proved to provide new information about D. moschatum mating system and infection strategy. Keywords: mikrosatelity; populační diverzita; dicyemida; eledone moschata; dicyema; populační genetika; microsatellites; population diversity; dicyemida; eledone moschata; dicyema; population genetics Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Ravens respond to unfamiliar corvid alarm calls
DAVÍDKOVÁ, Marika
2022 - Czech
The following work encompasses a research in the behaviour of the common raven (Corvus corax). I tested the responses of the common raven to heterospecific alarm calls of various bird species that differ in familiarity and taxonomical relatedness to ravens. Two other corvid species (jays) and two non-corvids (gulls) were presented. The ravens were given stimuli from one jay and one gull - one of which was always familiar to the tested ravens (European) and one unfamiliar (American). The results suggest that familiarity is not as important as the membership to the Corvidae family. Keywords: krkavcovití; heterospecifický varovný hlas; konspecifický varovný hlas; krkavec; sojka; racek; corvid; heterospecific alarm call; conspecific alarm call; raven; jay; gull Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.

Architectural education and its role in teaching of art education in the second level of elementary schools
PRAŽANOVÁ, Markéta
2011 - Czech
The goal of the work was effort to find reasons why to include the education in the field of architecture and environmental culture in teaching systems, mainly in the second level of elementary schools. I tried to apply these reasons into the topics of architecture training in the lessons of art education. The research among nearly 250 pupils of the 8.and 9.class of the elementary schools in big and small towns and last but not least also the discussion with the teachers of art education at elementary schools helped to the better understanding in this area. The role of architecture in fine arts, its purpose, the role of architecture in society and summary of the role of architecture at elementary schools, mainly in the lessons of art education, form parts of the overall consideration. The reason of involving architecture into teaching is the endeavour for strengthening of sensitivity towards architecture, urbanism, values of the environment. Architecture is a part of our cultural heritage and the art that touches our senses, forms our attitudes and esthetic perception of reality. Architecture is a part of everyday life and tells about the standard of society. Responsible approach towards creation of the environment and also education in this field only allow the quality that can be passed on to next generations. Currently, all developed countries have been aware of this fact and mainly in the EU countries the pressure on education of all inhabitants in the field of architecture and formation of the environment has been growing. One of the main targets is to involve the curriculum in education at elementary schools (secondary schools and also nursery schools). There should not be more curriculum, this should only be rearranged, current possibilities can be utilized and architecture topics can be included where they are now omitted and replaced by other ones. The fundament of education should be formed through familiarization and cognition of the place where we live - a village, town and environment from perspective of an inhabitant and especially of a user. Jen zodpovědný přístup ke tvorbě prostředí a zároveň ke vzdělávání v teto oblasti umožní vznik kvality, kterou bude možno předat dalším generacím. V současné době si tuto skutečnost uvědomují všechny vyspělé země a především v Evropské unii sílí tlak na vzdělávání všech občanů v oblasti architektury a tvorby životního prostředí. Základem vzdělání mělo byt poznávání místa, kde žijeme - obce, města, krajiny z pohledu obyvatele a především uživatele. Available in the Digital Repository of University of South Bohemia.
