Effect of pH on the denitrifying enzyme activity in pasture soils in relation to the intrinsic differences in denitrifier communities
ČUHEL, Jiří
2011 - anglický
The effects of pH on denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA) and on the ratio of the denitrification products, N2O and N2, were determined in three pasture soils differing in cattle impact. The linkage between intrinsic differences in the denitrifying communities and pH effects on relative N2O production was also assessed. The soils were therefore analyzed for DEA and N2O production over a range of pH values and for the kinetic constants of NO3- and N2O reductions. Diet composition of Common Kestrels Falco tinnunculus and Long-eared Owls Asio otus coexisting in an urban environment
LÖVY, Matěj
2011 - anglický
We studied dietary composition of urban populations of Common Kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) and Long-eared Owls (Asio otus) under fluctuating vole abundance. We tested hypotheses that the proportion of alternative prey in the diet increase with decreasing vole abundance throughout the years and that alternative prey differ between raptors due to different daily activities and/or hunting techniques. Finally, we tested whether the proportion of voles in the diet is influenced by the nest position within the city. Klíčová slova: Common Kestrel; Long-eared Owl; diet composition; vole; urban population Plné texty jsou dostupné v digitálním repozitáři JČU.

Elevational gradients in phylogenetic structure of ant communities reveal the interplay of biotic and abiotic constraints on diversity
MACHÁČ, Antonín
2011 - anglický
Incorporating information on species? phylogeny into the framework of conventional community ecology, we illustrate that ant communities situated in lowlands are primarily structured by interspecific competition. In contrast, highland communities are formed by habitat filtering on phylogenetically conserved temperature tolerances. In sum, our study highlights the potential role of niche constraints, environmental temperature, and competition in shaping broad-scale diversity gradients. The effect of nutrient level on plant structure and production in a wet grassland: a field study
KÁPLOVÁ, Miroslava
2011 - anglický
Since the 1950s, agricultural intensification has affected the structure and functioning of ecological systems including wet grasslands. Our study site, a wet grassland near Třeboň, Czech Republic, was historically a sedge meadow, but increased nutrient additions, a long-lasting flood in 2002 and changed mowing patterns resulted in domination by Phalaris arundinacea. The aim of the study was to determine how different nutrient conditions may affect plant structure and production in a wet grassland used for hay production. Experimental examination of EFL and MATX eukaryotic horizontal gene transfers: co-existence of mutually exclusive transcripts predates functional rescue
RŮŽIČKA, Petr
2011 - anglický
Many eukaryotic genes do not follow simple vertical inheritance. Elongation factor 1? (EF-1?) and methionine adenosyl transferase (MAT) are enzymes with complicated evolutionary histories and, interestingly, the two cases have several features in common. These essential enzymes occur as two relatively divergent paralogs (EF-1?/EFL, MAT/MATX) that have patchy distributions in eukaryotic lineages that are nearly mutually exclusive. To explain such distributions, we must invoke either multiple eukaryote-to-eukaryote horizontal gene transfers (HGTs) followed by functional replacement, or presence of both paralogs in the common ancestor followed by longterm co-existence and differential losses in various eukaryotic lineages. To understand the evolution of these paralogs, we have performed in vivo experiments in Trypanosoma brucei addressing the consequences of long-term co-expression and functional replacement. In the first experiment of its kind, we have demonstrated that EF-1? and MAT can be simultaneously expressed with EFL and MATX, respectively, without affecting the growth of the flagellates. After the endogenous MAT or EF-1? was down-regulated by RNA interference, MATX immediately substituted for its paralog, while EFL was not able to substitute for EF-1?, leading to mortality. We conclude that MATX is naturally capable of evolving patchy paralog distribution via HGTs and/or long term co-expression and differential losses. The capability of EFL to spread by HGT is lower and so the patchy distribution of EF-1?/EFL paralogs was probably shaped mainly by deep paralogy followed by long term co-existence and differential losses.
