2018 - Czech The publication "Eye-tracking in Cognitive Cartography and Other Fields" comprehensively explores the use of eye tracking in cognitive cartography. In the first three chapters, readers learn about the theoretical fundamentals of eye-tracking technology and become familiarized with the various means of measuring eye movements. An overview looks at several fields employing eye-tracking, with an emphasis on cartography from the early stages of eye-tracking map research to current trends as well as the links between cartography and psychology. The following chapters examine more practical issues. Three types of eye-trackers are introduced. To assist readers in beginning their own research, setting up and connecting these devices to computers is described in great detail. The book also contains a very detailed chapter dealing with how to prepare an experiment, providing essential information about variable types and forming an understanding about experiment design. This chapter also contains recommendations for choosing the right respondents for qualitative and quantitative research. Emphasis is also given to describing an experiment's design and the direct use of applications provided with eye-trackers. Data recording tips are also mentioned for researchers to benefit from during their own research. When working with eye-tracking data, data pre-processing and validation are essential. In the chapter devoted to this issue, readers become familiar with conversion tools developed at the Department of Geoinformatics at the Palacký University in Olomouc. With these tools, data can be easily exported to various applications. They are freely available and save much research time. Eye-tracking research investigates fundamental eye-movements called fixations and saccades. Researchers ought to spend time setting the correct threshold of the fixation identification algorithm. The book contains recommended values for these thresholds based on the author's case study. The final stage of data preparation is data cleaning and finding errors. This part of the book is based on the author's own experiences. Publikace "Eye-tracking (nejen) v kognitivní kartografii. Praktický průvodce tvorbou a vyhodnocením experimentu" nabízí komplexní pohled na využití sledování pohybu očí při hodnocení a optimalizaci map. Čtenáři se v ní dozvědí teoretické základy, na kterých technologie eye-tracking funguje, seznámí se s různými způsoby měření pohybu očí a rovněž získají základní přehled o oblastech, ve kterých je eye-tracking využíván samozřejmě s důrazem na kartografii. Značná část knihy je zaměřena prakticky. Nejprve je popsáno doporučené vybavení eye-tracking laboratoře a jsou představeny tři typy eye-trackerů. Následují obsáhlé kapitoly zaměřené na přípravu, design a průběh experimentu, pre-processing, validaci a čištění dat a konečně na samotné vyhodnocení naměřených pohybů očí. V těchto kapitolách autor vycházel z vlastních zkušeností, které se snažil prostřednictvím této publikace předat dalším výzkumníkům. Po přečtení knihy získají čtenáři obecné povědomí o popisované problematice a řadu doporučení a rad pro vlastní výzkum, ať už v oblasti kartografie či jiné.
