The publication is the latest in the series of proceedings based on materials from Central European protohistoric conferences Archaeology of Barbarians. For the most part, the studies published here are a revised text of the lectures given at the 2015 conference Archaeology of Barbarian at the MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach in Lower Austria. The main theme of the conference was the Celts and Germanic tribes in the Middle Danube Region in archaeological and numismatic sources (2nd century BC - 2nd century AD), but space was also given to other phenomena of protohistoric development. Intensive discussions included, among other things, absolute and relative chronology of transitional horizons, issues of monetization and testimony of numismatic groups, military, economic and diplomatic interactions along the north-south axis of the region and other sub-themes. For most of these questions, readers will find relevant studies in the present proceedings, which contains a total of 18 studies by authors from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Germany. Die Publikation ist ein weiterer Teil der Serie von Sammelschriften, die auf der Grundlage der mitteleuropäischen frühgeschichtlichen Konferenzen Archäologie der Barbaren entstehen. Die hier veröffentlichten Studien stellen größtenteils eine umgearbeitete textliche Version der Vorträge, die bei der Konferenz Archäologie der Barbaren 2015 in Räumlichkeiten des MAMUZ Museums Mistelbach in Niederösterreich gehalten wurden. Das Hauptthema der Konferenz waren Kelten und Germanen im Mitteldonaugebiet in archäologischen und numismatischen Quellen (2. Jh. v. Chr. – 2. Jh. n. Chr.). Behandelt wurden jedoch auch weitere Phänomene der frühgeschichtlichen. Intensiv diskutiert wurden unter anderem die thematischen Bereiche der absoluten und relativen Chronologie der Übergangshorizonte, die Fragen der Monetarisierung und Aussage der numismatischen Fundverbände, die militärischen, wirtschaftlichen und diplomatischen Interaktionen entlang der nord-südlichen Achse der Region und weitere partielle Themen. Entsprechende Studien zu den meisten dieser Fragen finden die Leser auch in dem vorliegenden Sammelband, der insgesamt 18 Studien von Autoren aus der Tschechischen Republik, der Slowakei, Polen, Ungarn und Deutschland enthält.

This volume is a collection of 25 conference papers dealing with the arms and equestrian equipment in the East and Central Europe between the 8th and 10th centuries. It brings a wide variety of issues, from typology and chronology through manufacturing technology and a practical application of artefacts to the general questions of medieval warfare. It presents finds both from the settlement and grave contexts. The predominant archaeological perspective is completed by historical and other studies, including a scientific experiment. Tagungsband mit 25 der Problematik der Bewaffnung und Reiterausrüstung des 8.-10. Jahrhunderts in Ostmitteleuropa gewidmeten Beiträgen. Er eröffnet ein breites Spektrum der Fragen, die von der Typologie und Chronologie über die Produktionstechnologie und praktische Anwendung von Artefakten bis hin zu allgemeinen Problematik des Militärwesens in frühmittelalterlicher Gesellschaft reichen. Neben der vorwiegenden archäologischen Sicht bietet er die Aussage von Historie und anderen Fachbereichen. Es fehlt nicht ein archäologisches Experiment.

Preconditions of the genesis of the Přemyslid realm

In the following study we analyse the validity of the nowgenerally-accepted view of the beginnings of the Přemyslid realm. Those who established this viewpoint emphasisethe income from selling slaves (and distance trade in general) as the main source the dynasties in Central Europeused to strengthen their economic power, which, in the next stage, enabled them to build powerful cavalry armiesas their “iron fist”. With these armies they were supposed to have built their “states”. In this article, not only is theautomatism of this mechanism brought into question (the prevalence of the cavalry), but also the idea that a statecan be built with an army. The author, on the one hand, points out the predatory character of such a system, and onthe other hand draws attention to the building of hillforts as a mechanism that not only enhanced the protection ofa given area, but also, due to the need for construction and repairs, brought large groups of people together, and thusformed a common identity for them.

The conference focused on the issues of nutrition of Roman and early medieval elites on a broad source basis and from a multi-disciplinary point of view. The problematic was discussed both in diachronic and geographical comparison. Im Rahmen der Tagung wurden die Fragen der Ernährung von römisch-frühmittelalterlichen Eliten auf einer breiten Quellengrundlage und aus der Sicht mehrerer Disziplinen beleuchtet und über Zeiten und Räumen hinweg vergleichend diskutiert.

Brooches represent a category of material evidence which in the past 25 years often became object of a very intensive metal detecting. In the Czech Republic, the number of amateurs who presently carry out this activity is much higher than the number of professional archaeologists. Archaeological science cannot omit the knowledge resulting from amateur metal-detecting finds, regardless of our personal opinion in this matter. We regard the documentation of all archaeological finds in our country as a professional duty of archaeological institutions, which is not contradictable by any reasonable arguments. On the contrary, when detectorists themselves or the general public prevent archaeologists from documenting these artefacts and making them accessible for professional study, this process gradually makes archaeology “blind”. Spony představují skupinu nálezů, které byly v průběhu posledních 25 let často předmětem intenzivního zájmu detektorové prospekce. V České republice je v současnosti počet amatérů provozujících tuto aktivitu podstatně větší než profesionálních archeologů. Archeologie jakožto věda nemůže rezignovat na poznatky, které pocházejí z nálezů učiněných detektoráři, bez ohledu na osobní názory. Považujeme proto dokumentaci všech archeologických nálezů v naší zemi za profesní povinnost archeologických institucí, která není zpochybnitelná žádnými smysluplnými argumenty. Naopak, pokud samotní detektoráři či široká veřejnost znemožní archeologům dokumentaci těchto nálezů, způsobují tím postupný proces postupného „oslepnutí“ archeologie.

The collected volume, which comprises papers from 49 authors, is thematically focused on brooches of the Iron Age, Roman Period and Migration Period. Brooches represent one of the most important categories of artefacts in protohistoric archaeology and their role in the acquisition of knowledge about barbarian communities is often irreplaceable. Celtic, Roman or Germanic brooches are remarkable, quantitatively representative and morphologically variegated finds. The wide spectrum of their information possibilities often goes beyond the potential of the other tangible evidence. They represent one of the buttresses of relative-chronological systems and contribute significantly to the detailed knowledge of many aspects of human cultures in the past, including the production procedures, trade and other forms of interactions, social differentiation or regional modifications of fashion trends. Most of the 33 chapters published in this volume were presented and vividly discussed in the VIII Protohistoric Conference, which was held in premises of the Palacký University in Olomouc in 2012. The authors strived to put together individual groups of new brooch finds from the barbarian territory in Central Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Poland) but also from peripheral parts of the Roman Empire, from provinces. In individual chapters they tried to outline several aspects of their documentation and classification and paid attention to analysis of selected categories. The authors publish in this volume new assemblages of finds and pay attention to various partial analyses of individual types or groups of brooches within a long period of time and with respect to current state of research. Sborník, na jehož vzniku se podílelo 49 autorů, je tematicky věnován sponám doby železné, římské a stěhování národů. Spony představují jednu z nejdůležitějších artefaktových kategorií protohistorické archeologie a jejich role je v procesu poznání barbarských komunit často nezastupitelná. Keltské, římské či germánské spony jsou nápadnými, kvantitativně reprezentativními a morfologicky rozmanitými nálezy, jejichž rozsáhlá škála vypovídacích možností mnohdy převyšuje potenciál ostatních hmotných pramenů. Jsou jedním z opěrných pilířů relativně-chronologických systémů a významně mohou přispívat k bližšímu poznání celé řady aspektů minulých kultur, včetně výrobních procesů, obchodu a jiných forem interakcí, společenské diferenciace či regionálních proměn módních vln. Většina z 33 kapitol publikovaných v tomto svazku byla přednesena a v širokém okruhu badatelů diskutována na VIII. Protohistorické konferenci, která se konala v prostorách Univerzity Palackého v Olomouci v roce 2012. Autoři si kladli za cíl shromáždit dílčí skupiny nových nálezů spon z oblasti středoevropského barbarika (Česká republika, Slovensko, Rakousko a Polsko), ale rovněž z okrajových částí Římské říše, resp. z jejích provincií. V jednotlivých kapitolách se pokusili nastínit některé aspekty jejich dokumentace a klasifikace a věnovat se detailní analýze vybraných kategorií. Autoři zde publikují nejen nové nálezové soubory, ale také se věnují různým dílčím analýzám jednotlivých typů nebo skupin spon v dlouhém časovém rozpětí a pod zorným úhlem aktuálního stavu bádání.
