Pattern-welded sword from the grave No. 715, Mikulčice, and its metallographic examination

The investigated sword comes from Mikulčice Stronghold, which was one of the main power centres of the Gr. Moravian Empire created in the first third of the 9th century and abolished by invasion of Avars into Carpathian basin at the beginning of the 10th century. The weapon was lifted from the grave No. 715, in which also a knife, an axe, and remnants of spurs were found besides the sword. It is supposed, on the base of badly preserved skeleton, that the interred man died in age of 40-60. The sword is due to its general sturdy construction, a two-piece pommel, and a short guard, obviously related to the early-Carolingian types and could be roughly dated to the first half of the 9th century. The sword ranks rather among display weapons, because its pattern-welded blade, which was presumably never destined for frequent combat, was only iron in preserved cutting-edges, and any previous effective improvement by steel and subsequent heat treatment cannot be evidenced in the cutting lines. Průzkumu podrobený meč byl nalezen v hrobě 715 odkrytém v roce 1958 v rámci systematického archeologického výzkumu na akropoli raně středověkého hradiště v Mikulčicích u Hodonína. Vedle pohřbu asi 40 až 60 letého muže byly nalezeny kromě meče i nůž, sekera a zbytky ostruh. Meč se jednoznačně hlásí ke starokarolínským typům, můžeme jej řadit k Petersenovu typu H a jeho výrobu lze v absolutní dataci klást zhruba do 1. poloviny 9. století. Díky damaskované čepeli náleží ke zdobnějším variantám zbraně, které byl patrně již při výrobě vtisknut demonstrační ráz. Břity čepele jsou měkké, železné a jejich efektivní poocelení a tepelné zpracování je nedoložitelné. Čepel v důsledku celoželezné konstrukce také nedosahuje pevnostních vlastností svých celoocelových a ocelo-železných protějšků. Mezi doposud prozkoumanými mikulčickými meči představuje nález z hrobu 715 zbraň „staršího“ typu bez kvalitního ocelového nebo pooceleného jádra a dostatečně mohutných kvalitních břitů.

Archaeological tinned iron artefacts

Tinning of iron is a technique used since the second half of the 5 th century BC by ancient craftsmen. It was used as a decorative technique imitating silver, as a corrosion resistant barrier, as a suitable surface for soldering, and for its non-toxic properties. Usually badly preserved and hidden under iron corrosion products, it is though visible on X-radiography and can be identified by chemical analysis. Its conservation poses problems during mechanical cleaning and desalination treatments. Techniku cínování železa používali starověcí řemeslníci již od druhé poloviny 5. stol. př.n.l. Tato technika se využívala k dekorativním účelům jako imitace stříbra, dále jako protikorozní ochrana železa, jako vhodná úprava povrchu pro pájení a také pro své netoxické vlastnosti. Pocínované povrchy, obvykle špatně zachované a skryté pod vrstvou korozních produktů, bývají dobře viditelné na rentgenových snímcích a dají se identifikovat pomocí chemické analýzy. Konzervace takvých povrchů však přináší problémy zejména během mechanického čištění a odstraňování zasolení předmětů.

In recent years, new pollen-analytical evidence has been obtained from sandstone area of "Bohemian Switzerland". These data show dramatic development in the transition from Middle to late Holocene that is driven by prominent acidification event. V posledních letech se podařilo získat nová pyloanalytická data z pískovcového území Českého Švýcarska. Tato data ukazují dramatický vývoj, kterým prošlo území na přechodu mezi středním a mladým holocénem a to díky výraznému okyselení způsobenému s největší pravděpodobností přirozenými procesy půdního vývoje.
