Vyšehrad: from a medieval fortification to an Early Baroque citadel

2012 - Czech The area of the fortified complex used by the Bohemian princes and kings has changed substantially since the Early Middle Ages. Today it is composed of the Baroque Bastion of St Ludmila on the south side with the "Old Burgrave's House", and the bastion of St Wenceslaus on the west side. The massive Early Baroque armoury that originally stood on the north side of Vyšehrad burned down in 1927. It was built in 1654-1678, when Vyšehrad has been rebuilt to the Baroque citadel and the terrain relief has changed significantly. Prostor knížecí a královské akropole se od raněstředověkého Vyšehradu podstatně změnil. V současnosti se skládá z barokního bastionu sv. Ludmily na jižní straně, s tzv. Starým purkrabstvím, z bastionu sv. Václava na západě a ze severní části, kde původně stávala mohutná raně barokní zbrojnice, která v roce 1927 vyhořela. Vznikla v letech 1654-1678, kdy byl Vyšehrad přestavěn do podoby barokní pevnosti a došlo k podstatným změnám v jeho terénním reliéfu. The search for method(s) in contemporary archaeology

2011 - Czech Archaeology and history do not differ in targets but in the means of study. Even though, archaeology has to build its own theories and methods and has to be able to ask its own questions about the past. At present, archaeology has more or less exhausted the information potential of its records using simple, intuitive methods. For further knowledge, it is necessary to develop more sofisticated approaches based on a deductive way of making inference and using results of many other disciplines within the field of nature sciences. We are trying to present an example using data from the recent excavation at an Early Medieval site of Roztoky. Archeologie a historie se neliší předmětem svého výzkumu, ale svými prostředky. I to však zakládá pro archeologii nutnost budování vlastní teorie a metody a kladení vlastních vědeckých otázek. V dnešní době archeologie víceméně vyčerpala možnosti poznání, kterého bylo možno dosáhnout relativně jednoduchými metodami a s kritikou pramenů převzatou z jiných historických oborů. Další pokrok v archeologii je podmíněn nejen aplikací nových postupů, které nabízejí přírodní vědy, ale i rozpracováním vlastních teorií a metod, a to např. teorie formačních procesů, teorie artefaktů jako symbolického systému apod. Na příkladě konkrétního archeologického výzkumu bude ukázána část metod, kterými současná archeologie může pracovat. New Roman Period settlement finds from Prague-Kbely

2011 - Czech Presented rescue excavations took place in north-eastern part of Prague in the year 2007 within the parish of Prague-Kbely. Most of the features and artifacts belong to the Bronze Age and the late Iron Age. In this contribution authors focus only on the part of archaeological record that brought some evidence on settlement activities datable to the Roman Period. Approximately a half of the artifacts come from eight sunken features, the other part was found widespread in the wide unstratified layer, so any house or farmstead layout is hardly recognizable. Among the common pottery sherds that belong typologically to the end of 2nd-4th Century AD and bear typical signs of Germanic pottery were found also some finds of Roman-provincial provenience. Due to the small dimensions and absence of more detailed typological traces is hard to say something more concrete about these in Bohemia rarely found artifacts. Important finds also present the metallic artifacts, mostly from 2nd and 3rd Century AD. Prezentovaný záchranný výzkum proběhl v severovýchodní části Prahy v roce 2007 v městské části Praha-Kbely. Většina objektů a nálezů patří době bronzové a mladší době železné. V tomto příspěvku se autoři soustředí pouze na archeologické situace, které přinesly doklady sídlištních aktivit datovatelných do doby římské. Přibližně polovina nálezů pochází z osmi zahloubených objektů, další část byla nalezena rozptýlená v mocné nestratifikované vrstvě, takže rozmístění domů či usedlostí je těžko rozeznatelné. Mezi obvyklými keramickými střepy, které patří typologicky do konce 2. až 4. století a nesou typické znaky germánské keramiky, byly zjištěny také nálezy římsko-provinciálního původu. Kvůli malým rozměrům a absenci detailnějších typologických znaků je obtížné říci o těchto v Čechách vzácně nalézaných předmětech něco konkrétnějšího. Důležité nálezy představují také kovové předměty, většinou z 2. a 3. století.
