Bribery environment and firm performance: evidence from Central and Eastern European countries
Hanousek, Jan; Kochanova, A.
2014 - anglický
We examine the relation between bureaucratic corruption and firm performance in CEE countries. While previous research uses data from BEEPS, which suffers from excessive non-reporting of corporate performance, we combine reliable firm financials from the Amadeus database with information on bribery practices from BEEPS. We show that differing consequences of corruption found in previous studies could be explained by the corruption environment in which a firm operates. Basically, higher mean corruption is associated with lower performance, while higher dispersion appears to facilitate firm performance. A detailed analysis is conducted by firm sector and size, and countries’ institutional environments. Klíčová slova: bureaucratic corruption; firm bribing behavior; firm performance Plné texty jsou dostupné na jednotlivých ústavech Akademie věd ČR.

Barbierik, Kamil; Děngeová, Zuzana; Jarý, Vladimír; Liška, Tomáš; Lišková, Michaela; Virius, Miroslav
2014 - anglický
This paper focuses on a dictionary writing system called Alexis that is currently under development at the Institute of the Czech language of the Czech Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic as part of a preparation of a new monolingual dictionary of the contemporary Czech language. At first, we explain motivation for development of a brand new DWS. We also discuss selected software technologies used for development of the DWS. Then we briefly describe structure of the system that consists of several modules that model key features of the dictionary such as lemma or list of entries. Special emphasis is put on output and editorial modules: we explain the relation between those modules, we demonstrate the process of correction of lemma and roles involved in the process. Finally, we present current status of development and planned new modules which include web interface or revision module. Klíčová slova: dictionary writing system; editorial tool; web application Plné texty jsou dostupné na jednotlivých ústavech Akademie věd ČR.

The absent description: compensating for its evocative and identifying function
Hoffmannová, Jana
2014 - anglický
A specific kind of descriptions may be observed in everyday spoken conversations: an explicit description based on full-meaning expressions is missing, while being replaced by other means of reference such as indefinite pronouns or quasi-referring means. This indefiniteness is also made possible due to the use of gestures and moves. Nevertheless, it is the shared experience and communicational strategies of the participants that make it possible for the description to fulfill its function. Klíčová slova: description; everyday spoken communication; face-to-face dialogues; indefinite and quasi-demonstrative pronouns; shared knowledge Plné texty jsou dostupné na jednotlivých ústavech Akademie věd ČR.

Hauser, Michael

The article addresses the issue of leisure in the sense of ancient schole. It strives to uncover the relationship between Aristotelian concept of theoretical activity and schole as vacuity. Klíčová slova: Time; leisure; schole; Platon; Aristotle; Marcuse; neoliberalism Plné texty jsou dostupné na jednotlivých ústavech Akademie věd ČR.

Dolní Věstonice II: a complex of sites with different chrono-cultural occupations. Preliminary results of the study of lithic assemblages
Polanská, M.; Novák, Martin
2014 - anglický
The scope of our study is directed to evaluation of each lithic assemblage from Dolní Věstonice II site and to characterize the technical systems of their production in order to understand the fine chrono-cultural seriation. The complex of sites at Dolní Věstonice II, dated to 30-23 ky uncal BP, includes the assemblages represented by clearly defined samples and another assemblages where the cultural attribution is still questionable. If some occupations certainly belong to the Pavlovian, others may be attributed as Gravettian, or even Upper Gravettian. Changes are visible in the procurement of raw material, and in technical systems of production and typological features. Klíčová slova: Gravettian; Dolní Věstonice; lithic industries; chrono-cultural seriation Plné texty jsou dostupné na jednotlivých ústavech Akademie věd ČR.

Identifying flip floppers: changing attitudes towards suicide bombing in the Middle East
Malečková, Jitka; Kovač, Dejan
2014 - anglický
Existing literature on attitudes towards terrorism is mainly based on a cross sectional analysis of data, providing insights in the differences among countries. This paper examines changes in public opinion on terrorism over time, utilizing the PEW Survey data on at titudes towards suicide bombing in the Middle East (specifically Egypt and Pakistan) from 2004 to 2011. Give n the lack of panel data, it uses the Markov chain methodology to compare changes in the distribution of people who approve of terrorism in order to identify specific demograp hic groups within a country that have a higher probability of switching between approval and disapproval of suicide bombing. Predicting future evolutio n of terror ism approval helps to identify outliers in the data. Year to year country level changes in approval of terrorism are divided into different subgroups to investigate whether the change is on aggregate level for the whole country or whether specific demograp hic groups are triggering the changes. The results of this research can inform policies aimed at reducing the rates of terrorism approval among specific demographic groups. Klíčová slova: public opinion; international terrorism; support of terrorism Plné texty jsou dostupné na jednotlivých ústavech Akademie věd ČR.

Model of Carrying Capacity - System Dynamics in NetLogo and Stella
Olševičová, K.; Cimler, R.; Tomášková, H.; Danielisová, Alžběta
2014 - anglický
We compare implementations of system dynamics of Celtic settlement using two tools - NetLogo and Stella. The objective of the model is to catch the relations among the population growth, the production growth and the land use with respect to agricultural strategies. Our main objective is to better understand the Celtic society and economy and its sudden collapse. More broadly we are interested in the applicability of multi-method simulation (agent-based approach enhanced with system dynamics and process modelling) in archaeological research. Klíčová slova: Carrying capacity model; NetLogo; social simulation; Stella; system dynamics Plné texty jsou dostupné na jednotlivých ústavech Akademie věd ČR.
