The Virtual Being's Mind

Virtual beings are being used in computer games, film industry, education and even in therapy. They need a functional model of mind – to process the signals from environment, to set their goals and to act. In this work we try to define the term of virtual being and to illustrate this concept in one particular project. Virtual beings in IVE Project have three remarkable features: 1) their perception is based on Gibson's theory of affordances, 2) their actions are planned using Belief-Desire-Intention theory, 3) their behavior can be dynamically simplified using Level-of-Detail technique. Virtuální bytosti nachází uplatnění v počítačových hrách, ve filmu, výuce i terapii. Tyto bytosti potřebují svůj funkční model psychiky – potřebují zpracovávat signály z prostředí, stanovovat své bezprostřední cíle a na základě toho jednat. Cílem příspěvku je vymezit pojem virtuální bytosti a ilustrovat na konkrétním projektu – IVE – možnost modelovat chování jednoduchých bytostí. Virtuální bytosti v mají v tomto projektu tři základní charakteristické rysy: 1) jejich vnímání vychází z Gibsonova konceptu afordancí, 2) jejich jednání je rozvrhováno pomocí Belief-Desire-Intention teorie M. E. Bratmana, 3) chování bytostí v odlehlých částech světa je možné zjednodušovat podle Level-of-Detail techniky.

Coping strategies in early adolescence and its influence to the social status in the classroom

This study presents outputs of the pilot version of the coping questionare, which is focused on possible problems in the family, school and with peers. This questionare alows identify the types of the problems, its subjective meanings and the coping strategy. Social status in the clasroom was measured by SORAD questionare. Results iterpreting coping strategy as part of the multidimensonal resources of the social status. Příspěvek pracuje s pilotní verzí dotazníku pro zjišťování struktury zvládání zátěže ve třech různých životních kontextech – v rodině, ve škole a v kontaktu s vrstevníky. Metoda umožňuje identifikovat vztah mezi typem a mírou prožívaných problémů a stylem jejich zvládání. Formou předběžného sdělení seznamujeme i s porovnáním výsledků s další potenciálně významnou proměnnou – sociální pozicí účastníka výzkumu ve školní třídě, zjišťovanou pomocí rozšířené verze metody SORAD. Závěrem se zabýváme možnostmi podrobnější konceptualizace zvládání zátěže s ohledem na sociální pozici jako aspekt jeho široce kontextuálního charakteru.

Relation of antisocial behavior of adolescents to school environment

The study deals with relation between antisocial behavior in adolescence and school environment. The Social and Health Assessment (SAHA), a school survey, was administered to a nationwide sample of 4,980 adolescents in three age cohorts (12, 14, and 16 years) in Prague and 12 regional capitals of the Czech Republic. In present study we focus on cohorts of 12 and 14 years old adolescents (N = 3023). K-means cluster analysis on the items of Antisocial Behavior Scale was used to identify the main clusters of antisocial behavior. Four major clusters of children were identified. Subsequently, adolescents from different clusters were compared on the levels of their attachment to school, school climate, perceived support from teachers and general motivation to study. As we expected, adolescents from the cluster with high rate of antisocial behaviors perceive the school environment as the most negative. Studie se zabývá vztahem mezi antisociálním chováním a školním prostředím. Ve výzkumu byla použita data z mezinárodního projektu SAHA (The Social And Health Assessment), který byl v České republice proveden u národního souboru adolescentů z městských oblastí (N = 4.980) ve třech věkových kohortách (12, 14 a 16 let). V předkládaném příspěvku jsme se zaměřili na kohorty 12letých a 14letých (N = 3023). K identifikaci osob s různými formami problémového chování jsme provedli nehierarchickou shlukovou analýzu na položkách škály antisociálního chování. Výsledkem byla identifikace 4 typů osob s různou mírou a charakterem antisociálního chování. Osoby z jednotlivých shluků jsme pomocí jednorozměrnéanalýzy rozptylu porovnali z hlediska jejich vztahu ke škole, školního klimatu, vnímané podpory od učitelů a obecné motivace ke studiu. Podle očekávání percipovali z jednotlivých typů školní prostředí jako nejvíce negativní dospívající s vysokou mírou antisociálního chování.

Researchers from the fields of psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, linguistics, biology and computer science discussed on the current state of the research on cognition. The conference Kognice 2006 offered the platform for the interdisciplinary dialogue and for learning about the very different approaches and languages which are linked by their curiosity on the nature of the human mind. Setkání odborníků z oblastí psychologie, filozofie, neurověd, lingvistiky, biologie a počítačové vědy vytvořilo fórum pro diskuzi o aktuálních otázkách výzkumu lidské kognice z různých názorových pozic. Konference Kognice 2006 nabídla příležitost k otevřenému a přátelskému mezioborovému dialogu a k seznámení se s přístupy, které i přes vzájemnou odlišnost spojuje snaha o poznání a porozumění mysli.

In this article we first introduce the IVE project (Intelligent Virtual Environment - developed in 2005 at MFF UK, Prague) and ISMA model (Intention - Suitability - Materialisation - Advice) and describe related theoretical issues of the project. IVE is a simulator of large virtual worlds populated with virtual beings, which uses a new model called ISMA for virtual world representation. This model is inspired by Gibson's affordace theory and Bratman's theory of practical reasoning. Gradually we realized that some project results also have psychological and philosophical interpretation, which is being discussed in this article. V roce 2005 byl na MFF UK vyvinut softwarový projekt IVE – inteligentní virtuální prostředí. Jedná se o simulátor rozsáhlého virtuálního světa obydleného virtuálními bytostmi. Za účelem technického řešení problémů spojených s projektem jsme navrhli model ISMA („intention – suitability – materialisation – advice“), který je novou technikou pro representaci virtuálního světa. Model staví na Gibsonově teorii afordancí a Bratmanově teorii praktického rozhodování. Postupně se ukázalo, že některé výsledky projektu mají i psychologickou a filosofickou interpretaci. V článku nejprve představíme projekt IVE a model ISMA a poté se budeme zabývat tímto „netechnickým“ aspektem projektu.

Smoking of cigarettes in adolescence and its relations

In the presented study, 3 types of respondents were identified according to the frequency of smoking cigarettes: smokers, non smokers, and occasional smokers. It was found that they differ in the type of attended school and also in school motivation, but not in proportion of males and females. When considering parental styles, smokers were characterized by low consistency, warmness, and involvement. Parental control was not found to be important. Smoking of cigarettes is related to alcohol, marijuana, and other substances use. Interestingly enough, most of the cigarettes smokers (81%) were found to be also repetitive users of marijuana Na základě udávané četnosti kouření cigaret (za celý život; za posledních 30 dní; denně v posledních 30 dnech) byly identifikovány tři typy osob: kuřáci; nekuřáci;příležitostní kuřáci, které se lišily v typu navštěvovaných škol a motivaci ke studiu, nikoli však v zastoupení mužů a žen. Z hlediska uplatňovaných stylů výchovy v rodině byli kuřáci charakterističtí nízkou konzistencí, vřelostí výchovy a zájmem rodičů; rodičovská kontrola neměla vliv na příslušnost k jednotlivým typům. Dále bylo zjištěno, že kouření cigaret v tomto věku souvisí s užíváním alkoholu a ostatních návykových látek. Zajímavým zjištěním je, že drtivá většina (81%) respondentů z typu kuřáků jsou také opakovanými uživateli marihuany.

It depends on what "consious" means: Methodology of unconscious perception research

Research on unconscious cognitive processes has been a controversial topic since the foundation of experimental psychology. However, we cannot consider it a psychological relict, but developing realm of research, with ongoing conceptual and methodological progress. This paper chiefly presents methodological approaches having been developed mainly since 1980’s and thus illustrates not only vivacity of contemporary research but also interrelatedness of methodological changes with conceptual frameworks. It shows that it is necessary to change our traditional view of some psycholocial categories, such as perceptual thresholds or conscious-unconscious distinction. Výzkum nevědomých kognitivních procesů je kontroverzním tématem od samotného vzniku experimentální psychologie. Přesto se nejedná o jakýsi psychologický relikt, ale o rozvíjející se výzkumnou oblast, v níž můžeme sledovat neustálý vývoj koncepcí a úpravu metod zkoumání. Tento příspěvek chce představit metodologické přístupy, které byly rozvíjeny především od 2. poloviny 80. let 20. století, a demonstrovat tak nejen živost současného výzkumu, ale také provázanost metodologických změn s koncepčními rámci a rovněž i nutnost pozměnit tradiční pojetí některých psychologických kategorií, jako je např. práh vnímání nebo hranice vědomého a nevědomého.

The VIII th “Social Processes and Personality” conference was devoted to the memory of Prof. Liduška Osecká, the eminent methodologist within the Czech and Slovak psychology and the former director (1993-1999) of the Institute of Psychology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, who would reached her 60th September 6, 2005. Within the traditional topic of the conference - basic and applied research in personality and social psychology - the conference’s main theme was the research methodology in psychology. Seventy-eight contributions (35 oral presentations and 43 posters) were presented at the conference, their substantial part is included in this conference anthology. V pořadí již osmý ročník konference „Sociální procesy a osobnost“ byl věnován památce Doc. PhDr. Lidušky Osecké, CSc., přední metodoložky české a slovenské psychologie a ředitelky Psychologického ústavu AV ČR v letech 1993 - 1999, která by se 6. září 2005 dožila šedesáti let. V rámci tradičního zaměření konference, jímž je základní i aplikovaný výzkum v oblasti psychologie osobnosti a sociální psychologie, byla proto hlavním tématem metodologie psychologického výzkumu. Na konferenci bylo odprezentováno 78 příspěvků (35 přednášek a 43 posterů), jejichž podstatná část je obsažena v předkládaném sborníku.
