Social capital and legitimacy of democracy in Czech Republic

The paper treats the relation between legitimacy of democracy and social capital. Analysis of the ISSP 2004 survey shows that in the Czech Republic the affective legitimacy of democracy is primarily influenced by political culture in its vertical dimension and trust in institutions. As for the horizontal dimension of political culture we can find only impact of cultural part of social capital, tolerance and social trust, whereas the civic participation has no effect to attitudes to democracy. Příspěvek sleduje vztah legitimity demokracie a kolektivního sociálního kapitálu. Analýza dat z výzkumu ISSP 2004 ukazuje, že v České republice je afektivní legitimita demokracie primárně ovlivněna politickou kulturou v její vertikální dimenzi a důvěrou v instituce. U horizontální dimenze lze pozitivní souvislost nalézt pouze s kulturní složkou sociálního kapitálu, reprezentovanou tolerancí a sociální důvěrou, zatímco občanská participace nemá na postoje k demokracii vliv.

The paper concerns with visual and textual representations of women in science. It focuses on calendar published by Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague in 2010. Calendar was issued to support university pre-school facility and at the same time it can be understood as a way CTU communicates issues related to gender and science to wider public. Příspěvek se zaměřuje na vizuální a textuální reprezentace vědkyň. Soustředí se na kalendář, který vydalo České učení technické v Praze v roce 2012. Kalendář byl vydán na podporu univerzitní mateřské školy a zároveň může být chápán jako nástroj komunikace genderových aspektů vědy ze ČVUT směrem k širší veřejnosti.

Immigrant Children and their Integration/Inclusion in Prague Elementary Schools

The aim of the article is to present the attitudes toward integration of immigrant children in Czech basic schools. The author analyzed more than 20 in-depth interviews with members of school management and teachers that she conducted in autumn 2009. As higher numbers of immigrant children in Czech schools and the demands of inclusive education is still relatively new in the Czech Republic, there exist no clear guidelines how to equalize educational opportunities of students of foreign origin and current praxis at schools considerably differs. The author discusses also acculturation strategies of immigrant families and concludes with statement that successful inclusive education depends upon partnership of school and family. Cílem příspěvku je představit postoj škol k aktuálnímu tématu integrace dětí cizinců. K tomuto účelu autorka provedla a analyzovala více než dvacet hloubkových rozhovorů s vedením a pedagogy pražských základních škol uskutečněných na podzim 2009. Problematika integrace dětí cizinců do škol je v České republice stále poměrně nová a není systematicky řešena. Školám chybí vodítka, jak postupovat při vyrovnávání šancí pro děti cizí státní příslušnosti a přístupy škol se podstatně liší. V článku jsou dále diskutovány různé akulturační strategie rodin, které jsou (vedle opatření zaváděných školami) také podstatná pro úspěch inkluze ve vzdělávání.

The Meaning of School Success and Failure at Primary School

The text deals with social construction of two social categories - "school success/failure" - at primary school. Data were obtained by an ethnographic study conducted at two Prague schools in eight and ninth year classes. Everyday evaluation practices of school mates and teachers toward pupils considered as un/successful were analysed. It is shown that crucial aspects of "success/failure" are not only academic abilities (intelligence) and an individual effort (merit), but also proper behaviour of child – internalization of certain values, his/her attitude towards authorities and education, being respectful. School success/failure has always moral consequences. A failure means an absence – of aspiration, intelligence, abilities, will, manners – and means stigmatisation. Příspěvek se zabývá konstruováním sociálních kategorií "školního ne/úspěchu" na základní škole. V datech získaných etnografickým výzkumem ve dvou třídách osmého a devátého ročníku pražských ZŠ byly analyzovány každodenní praktiky hodnocení žáků považovaných za "ne/úspěšné" ze strany spolužáků a pedagogů. Školní úspěch je chápán jako kombinace studijních předpokladů (inteligence) a snahy (výkonu) žáka/žákyně, ale souvisí úzce také se správným chováním ve škole, jeho/jejím postojem k autoritám, škole, vzdělání. Tedy se zastávanými hodnotami a respektováním norem – školního řádu a dalších (psaných i nepsaných) interakčních pravidel. Školní ne/úspěch má vždy morální důsledky. Neúspěch je nedostatkem – snahy, zájmu, vůle, schopností – a znamená stigmatizaci.

The Development of Small Municipalities – Terms and Operationalisation

The paper deals with selected theoretical frameworks of local community development. The dichotomy "development of community" and "development in community" is used for a better transparence of the theoretical approaches which are often fuzzy. A model of local development based on the both approaches, is presented, regarding both the structural factors and internal factors of collective action. Příspěvek se zabývá vybranými teoretickými přístupy k rozvoji lokálních komunit. Využívá dichotomii "rozvoj komunity" versus "rozvoj v komunitě" pro zpřehlednění existujících přístupů. Je zde prezentován model lokálního rozvoje založený na obou přístupech, zohledňující strukturní faktory a endogenní faktory kolektivního jednání.

The paper deals with the possibilities of development analysis on subregional, local level of rural municipalities. It is based on the assumption that community satisfaction belongs to key goals of local development. The paper uses survey data on the evaluation of different community aspects and community satisfaction Příspěvek se zaměřuje na možnosti analýzy rozvoje na sub-regionální, resp. lokální úrovni jednotlivých obcí. Vychází z předpokladu, že spokojenost se životem v obci patří ke klíčovým cílům lokálního rozvoje. Využívá hodnocení jednotlivých aspektů života v malých obcích a hodnocení spokojenosti se životem v obci získané pomocí dotazníkového šetření.

Social Capital – the Factor of Regional Development

First part of the paper shows that social capital plays crucial role in regional development, moreover that regional politics could increase the level of social capital in regions. We were able to distinguish three NUTS 2 regions that significantly differ from each other in the measure of social capital. Moreover we find out that social capital depends also on the size of municipality measured by the number of inhabitants. The larger the municipality is the lower the level of social capital. Příspěvek má dvě části, první z nich je věnována konceptualizaci vlivu sociálního kapitálu na regionální rozvoj, v druhé jsou uvedeny výsledky empirického šetření sociálního kapitálu v České republice. V analytické části je důraz kladen na teritoriální diferenciaci sociálního kapitálu podle regionů NUTS a také jeho diferenciaci podle velikosti sídla. Čím větší je velikost sídla, tím nižší je úroveň sociálního kapitálu.

Contribution was focused on the transformation of the Czech public views on the past and the present regime on many other aspects of private and public life. Based on the results of sociological surveys, among others, notes that there is no uniform or consistent memory of the nation in relation to Communism. Příspěvek byl zaměřen na proměnu názorů české veřejnosti na minulý a současný režim i nejrůznější další aspekty soukromého i veřejného života. Na základě výsledků sociologických průzkumů mj. konstatuje, že neexistuje žádná homogenní ani konzistentní paměť národa ve vztahu ke komunismu.
