From single feature to settlement pattern, landscape and society: a methodological approach to castellological research
Novák, David
2014 - English
Fortified manors are in the scope of interest from the 19th century and at present, we have solid and complex knowledge base, which can be evaluated to obtain interesting results. Most of the published papers dealing with fortified manors have undergone basic chronological and typological analysis without further interest in their spatial attributes or their relation to the hinterland. This fact and underestimation of quantitative analysis and statistics may be explained in the context of the culture-history paradigm, still prevailing in Czech archaeology. Alternatively, perhaps, it is just a result of the methodological inability of many archaeologists to deal with large data sets. As a response to this situation, the author attempts to look at fortified manors in another way - through statistical methods and using GIS. Paper is aimed to present methodology used in case study of selected region in western part of Central Bohemia as a sample. Keywords: fortified manors; methodology; GIS; principal component analysis; Middle Ages and Renaissance Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Fuzzy Methods in Land Use Modeling for Archaeology
Machálek, T.; Cimler, R.; Olševičová, K.; Danielisová, Alžběta
2013 - English
The general objective of our research is to develop the complex agentbased simulation of ancient Celtic society population, food production and economics. To achieve this we proposed the agent-based agricultural model of land suitability for miscellaneous farming systems. The behaviour of agents is controlled by a fuzzy rule-based system. The system encodes farmers' agricultural knowledge as regards the decision where to apply specific farming method. Corresponding linguistic variables describe (1) the distance of individual land patches from the household, (2) the slope of the land, (3) the yield of individual land patches and (4) total harvest as a percentage of inhabitants' annual nutritional requirement. To prevent high-frequency spatial changes in land suitability caused by time-dependent stochastic nature of the crop yields, our model performs result smoothing using spatial signal filtering. Keywords: Agent-based model; fuzzy sets; land-use model; social simulation Available at various institutes of the ASCR

The main goal of this work was to introduce Early Modern finds of ceramics and glass from Prague Castle. As a starting source for this study were used eight find collections of cesspits originating from the Prague Castle area belong to houses located along the northern and western edge of the Third Castle Courtyard. The above mentioned collections of finds represent mainly features unearthed in the years 1925-1932 or 1957. The only recently discovered cesspit represents a feature (OBJ. 1) from the House No. 34/IV on the Jiřské square. The study is attempting to answer the question, in the cooperation with archive sources, how much can the cesspit-fillings reflect social position of their users.
