Unconquered Yet Defeated. Fortress Towns of Bohemia and Moravia in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866

2023 - Czech Authors of the essay have attempted, based on ego-documents, to reveal the borderlines of the discrepancy between the expected standard of intensity and duration of the Austro-Prussian conflict and the subsequent reality. One of the 19th-century mnodernizing processes condensed in the short and intense clash in the summer of 1866 when in consequence of increased density of the traffic infrastructure and the introduction of new communication and infrastructure networks, the world seemed „smaller“ and „faster“. The essay brings an analysis of the period discrourse that the autohors understand not only as a frame within which memories and events were performed, but also as a poduct of mnemonic processes. Autoři eseje se pokusili na základě ego-dokumentů odhalit hranice rozporu mezi očekávaným standardem intenzity a délky trvání prusko-rakouského konfliktu a následnou realitou. Jeden z modernizačních procesů 19. století se zkondenzoval v krátkém a intenzivním střetu v létě 1866, kdy se v důsledku zvýšení hustoty dopravní infrastruktury a zavedení nových komunikačních a infrastrukturních sítí svět zdál „menší“ a „rychlejší“. Esej přináší analýzu dobového diskurzu, který autoři chápou nejen jako rámec, v němž se odehrávaly vzpomínky a události, ale také jako produkt těchto mnemonických procesů. The views of Daniel Adam of Veleslavín on Czechs and foreigners

2023 - Czech The paper is devoted to the views of Daniel Adam of Veleslavín (1546–1599) on the Czechs and foreigners with whom the Czech lands are in contact or who they know from the available literature. These are mainly Germans, Italians and Poles, but attention is also paid to peoples who pose a real or potential threat to the Czech lands (Turks and Russians). Veleslavín judges that the old Czechs possessed good qualities (bravery, faith in God, reliability, respect for order and laws), but that they lost these qualities through contact with foreign nations. They concentrate more on secular pleasures and slacken their concern for the nation and the homeland. The material base for the paper was the Czech written prefaces to the works that Veleslavín prepared for publication in 1578–1599. Příspěvek je věnován názorům Daniela Adama z Veleslavína (1546–1599) na Čechy a cizince, s nimiž jsou české země ve styku, případně které znají z dostupné literatury. Jedná se zejména o Němce, Italy a Poláky, avšak pozornost je věnována i národům, které představují pro české země reálnou či potenciální hrozbu (Turci a Rusové). Veleslavín soudí, že staří Čechové disponovali dobrými vlastnostmi (udatnost, víra v boha, spolehlivost, dodržování řádu a zákonů), avšak stykem s cizími národy tyto vlastnosti ztrácejí, soustředí se více na světské radovánky a polevují v péči o národ a vlast. – Materiálovou bází pro příspěvek byly zejména česky psané předmluvy k dílům, které Veleslavín připravil ke knižnímu vydání v letech 1578– 1599.\n Keywords: Humanistic literature; preface; Daniel Adam of Veleslavín; Czechs and foreigners in the 16th century Available at various institutes of the ASCR The views of Daniel Adam of Veleslavín on Czechs and foreigners

Palacky fell out of the ATM or Where the proper name begins and ends from the point of view of capitalization

2023 - Czech Capital letters in Czech indicate a proper name. However, distinguishing a proper name from a common one can challenging, as evidenced by the number of capitalization enquiries answered by the Language Consulting Center (LCC) of the Czech Language Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CLI). In addition, the status of a proper name is not immutable. Th e name may go through an appellativization process (uppercase letter changes to lowercase) or proprialization process (lowercase letters become uppercase). Th is text deals with appellativization in connection with the spelling and with legal consequences of this process, as well as with other naming types that appear to be problematic for Czech users in terms of capitalization. Telephone, letter, and e-mail inquiries of the LCC, which are annotated in the electronic Database of Language Enquiries on the CLI website, are used as material. Velká počáteční písmena v češtině signalizují vlastní jméno. Rozpoznání vlastního a obecného jména však může být obtížné, což dokládá množství dotazů na psaní velkých písmen, které řeší jazyková poradna ÚJČ AV ČR. Status vlastního jména navíc není neměnný. Může dojít k apelativizaci jména (velké písmeno se změní na malé) nebo k proprializaci (malé písmeno se změní na velké). Tento text se věnuje jednak apelativizaci a formálním pravopisným a právním důsledkům, které tento proces má, jednak dalším pojmenovacím typům, které se z hlediska psaní velkých písmen jeví pro uživatele češtiny jako problematické. Jako materiál jsou použity telefonické, dopisní a e-mailové dotazy jazykové poradny ÚJČ, které jsou zaznamenány v elektronické Databázi jazykových dotazů na webových stránkách ÚJČ. Dikobraz ‚porcupine‘ and buvol ‚buffalo‘ 200 years after Presl – research in the present-day pronunciation of two common nouns

2023 - Czech Within a scientific internship for high school students realized in 2021 in the Czech Language Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, besides other things, the current pronunciation usage of the expressions dikobraz ‚porcupine‘ and buvol ‚buffalo‘, both proposed by J. S. Presl as official Czech zoological terms, has been investigated. Both of these designations are remarkable from the phonetic point of view. In case of dikobraz, the existing monolingual dictionaries of Czech have so far admitted the pronunciation variants [dɪkobras] and [ɟɪkobras]. The analysis of sound records from the online archives of Czech public media has proved that the variant [ɟɪkobras], reflecting the etymological origin of this Russianism, has not appeared in a representative sample of both professional and non‑professional speakers. An informal survey has discovered that its occurrence would be surprising or disturbing for a majority of the users of Czech. On the other hand, in case of the second analysed expression buvol, it has been proved that more than one third of the investigated Czech speakers use the sound variant [buːvol], whereas no such sound (or graphical) variant is codified at present (however, J. S. Presl originally proposed a form written bůvol). The results of this research may serve also as important data for the arising Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech, for the Internet Language Reference Book etc. V rámci středoškolské studentské stáže realizované v roce 2021 v Ústavu pro jazyk český AV ČR byl mj. zkoumán aktuální výslovnostní úzus výrazů dikobraz a buvol, které byly spolu s mnoha dalšími v 1. polovině 19. století navrženy J. S. Preslem coby oficiální české zoologické názvy. Obě tato pojmenování jsou pozoruhodná z fonetického hlediska. U slova dikobraz dosavadní výkladové slovníky češtiny připouštěly výslovnostní dubletu [dɪkobras] i [ďɪkobras]. Analýzou zvukových dokladů pocházejících z on-line archivů českých veřejnoprávních médií bylo prokázáno, že u reprezentativního vzorku profesionálních i neprofesionálních mluvčích se varianta [ďɪkobras], reflektující etymologický původ daného rusismu, vůbec neobjevila. Neformální průzkum dále ukázal, že pro většinu uživatelů češtiny by její výskyt byl překvapivý či rušivý. U druhého výrazu bylo naopak zjištěno, že více než jedna třetina zkoumaných českých mluvčích užívá zvukovou variantu [buːvol], přičemž žádná zvuková (ani grafická) dubleta v současnosti kodifikována není (J. S. Presl však původně navrhl podobu zapisovanou jako bůvol). Výsledky výzkumu mohou posloužit i jako podklad pro vznikající Akademický slovník současné češtiny, pro Internetovou jazykovou příručku atp. The Memory of Table Mountain Bor in the Light of Minor Place Names

2023 - Czech Table mountain Bor forms part of the border zone of mountains surrounding Bohemia together with the neighbouring Hejšovina. Bor has not received much attention in onomastic research and this study attempts to fill this gap. It will highlight the well-known and lesser-known variants of the name of mountain, which originated in both Czech and German environments. We pay special attention to the names for the sandstone rock labyrinth situated on the edge of Bor. The oldest name of the labyrinth, Divoké ďoury (EN: Wild Holes, GER: Wilde Löcher), as well as the oldest names of individual rock formations were created by Daniel Ducháč, a resident of the village of Bukovina, which belonged to the so-called Czech Corner in Kłodzko Land. In the conclusion of the study we will answer the question whether the original Czech name of the rock labyrinth, i.e. Divoké ďoury, can still be found in the linguistic landscape of the area today or not. Stolová hora Bor tvoří spolu se sousední Hejšovinou součást pohraničního pásma hor, obklopujících území Čech. V onomastických výzkumech se jí dosud nedostalo přílišné pozornosti a tuto mezeru se pokusí zaplnit předkládaná studie. Upozorníme v ní na známé i méně známé varianty názvu hory, které vznikly jak v českém, tak i v německém prostředí. Zvláštní pozornost věnujeme jménům pro pískovcový skalní labyrint nacházející se na hřebeni Boru. Jeho nejstarší název Divoké ďoury, stejně jako i nejstarší pojmenování jednotlivých skalních útvarů vytvořil Daniel Ducháč, obyvatel obce Bukovina, která náležela k tzv. Českému koutku v Kladsku. V závěru studie odpovíme na otázku, zda lze prvotní české expresivní jméno skalního labyrintu v současné době ještě stále najít v jazykové krajině sledované oblasti, nebo už nikoliv. Liturgical vestments and objects from the tombs of Prague bishops

2023 - Czech The article presents a unique collection of fragments of liturgical textiles, insignia and other objects from the 11th to 13th centuries from the graves of Prague bishops from the St. Vitus Cathedral. The core part of the collection consists of fragments of silk fabrics and laces, from which parts of the liturgical vestments were originally made. Other finds are objects made of various materials, such as leather shoes, parts of crosiers and liturgical objects. Článek představuje unikátní soubor fragmentů liturgických textilií, insignií a dalších předmětů z období 11. až 13. století pocházejících z hrobů pražských biskupů z katedrály sv. Víta. Stěžejní část souboru tvoří fragmenty hedvábných tkanin a tkanic, z nichž byly původně zhotoveny součásti liturgického odění. Dalšími nálezy jsou předměty z různých materiálů, například kožené střevíce, části berel a liturgické náčiní.
