American Prairie in the Selected Short Stories of Willa Cather

The main purpose of this thesis is to describe the experience of early years of prairie settlement and its depiction in Willa Cather's short stories as well as to analyze the role of women and their feelings about life on the prairie situated in the Great Plains region. In the first part, key terms connected to the thesis are explained, the description of the prairie region is provided and historical circumstances leading to the settlement as well as the experience of the first settlers are explained. The second part focuses on selected short stories of Willa Cather and analyzes her depiction of the prairie environment and weather conditions. Finally, the analysis of Cather's portrayal of the settlers' life and the role of women and their memories is provided. This thesis is devoted to a morphosyntactic and pragmatic analysis of inversion and fronting distributed in contemporary British newspapers. The theoretical part focuses on a description of the two aforementioned highlighting structures. In addition, word order and the principles of structuring information in a sentence are discussed. The analytical part subsequently studies the morphosyntactic features, function and occurrence of inversion and fronting in newspaper discourse. The main aim of this bachelor paper is to provide an analysis of the process of growing up in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. This work analyzes the development of Scout's gender identity in regards to the traditional Southern gender role for women. Firstly, the genre Bildungsroman is introduced. Then, the essence of Southern womanhood is depicted simultaneously with the major changes in the Southern society, ranking from the antebellum era to the Great Depression. The second part of the paper consists of the detail analysis of Scout's coming-of-age, regarding her conformance to the traditional gender code for girls of her time. This bachelor thesis is dealing with selected poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834) and his contemporary Robert Southey (1774 - 1843), more specifically with poems "Frost at Midnight," "Kubla Khan," and "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by S. T. Coleridge; as well as "Madoc," and "The Inchcape Rock" by R. Southey. In its first part the thesis focuses on introducing the discipline of ecocriticism, introduce the authors' perspective of relation between nature and man, and explains the importance of so called 'sublime' for romantics. In the second and third chapter of the thesis ecocritical comparative analyses of selected poetry are covered. The results of the thesis are summarized in conclusion. Narrative Strategies in Selected Sherlock Holmes Stories

This paper focuses on the differences in narrative strategies in two short stories about Sherlock Holmes. In the first part of the paper, the descriptions of different kinds of narrators and ways of expressing characters' thoughts, i.e. for example direct and indirect speech, interior monologue, etc. are provided, as well as a brief summary of the historical background of detective fiction with focus on the changes in narrative style. The second part of this paper deals with finding examples of the described phenomena in "The Speckled Band" and "The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" and explaining the observed differences between the two stories. Journeys in Kerouac's On the Road

The aim of the bachelor paper is to provide an analysis of the significance of the "journey" in Jack Kerouac's On the Road. The theoretical part of the thesis outlines the definition of the journey and the ways this term can be understand from religious perspective in connection with the core book, especially how the inward spiritual journey evolved in tandem with the physical road trip. The chapter outlines the cultural and historical background of the Beat Generation and post-war society in the USA. All the mentioned ways are defined and elaborated in order to be clear with the usage of relevant literature sources connected to the Beat Generation and literature, American literature in general and mid-20th century fiction. The analytical part includes the application of the information explained in the theoretical part into practice, explores the importance of the physical journey as well as the one into person's inside and their interconnection and discusses the aspects of a journey. The idea of mobility and whether the journey in the On the Road is just the way of running away from society or whether it portrays the form of a protest and finding is also focused on. This paper is focused on the Space Race in Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff. The first chapter provides a summary of historical background and defines the terms the Cold War and the Space Race. The theoretical part also provides information about Tom Wolfe's life, his place in literature, and the origin and characteristic of the New Journalism, and also clarifies Wolfe's interest in the Space Race. The main part of this paper is the analysis of the book The Right Stuff. It covers the plot, themes, as well as the characters of the book. It analyses the book and devices of the New Journalism used in it. The last chapter of the analytical part of this thesis covers theory of adaptation and applies it to Phillip Kaufmann's movie adaptation of Wolfe's book. This part analyses the movie and compares it to the book as well as to the real historical events.
