Great Moravia between Byzantium and the Latin West
Vavřínek, Vladimír
2001 - Czech
The Cyrillo-Methodian mission in Great Moravia did not intend to incorporate this country into the sphere of Byzantine political power but to strengthen the independence of the Moravian state by creating an ecclesiastical church province independent of Bavarian bishops. While maintaining the idea of the supreme power of the Byzantine emperor over the entire Christian world they recognized at the same time the jurisdiction of the Roman pope. The creation of Slavonic literature and the introduction of the Slavonic language into liturgy, a revolutionary deed at that time, was intended as a means for establishing an autonomous Slavonic culture that would further develop on its own. Cílem činnosti cyrilometodějské misie nebylo začlenit Velkou Moravu do mocenské sféry byzantské říše, ale naopak vytvořením samostatné Moravské církevní organizace chtěla dosáhnout jeho nezávislost na bavorském episkopátu a tím i přispět k posílení samostatnosti moravského státu. Uznání papežské jurisdikce nad Moravou přesto neznamenalo zaujetí protibyzantského stanoviska, protože Konstantin-Cyril i Metoděj i nadále uznávali ideální svrchovanost byzantských císařů v křesťanském světě. Vytvoření slovanské literatury a zavedení slovanského jazyka do liturgie, což byl v té době počin přímo převratný, mělo vytvořit předpoklady pro samostatný tvůrčí kulturní vývoj Slovanů.
